Hip Hop Album Sales: Brockhampton Nabs Billboard 200’s Coveted Spot With “Iridescence”

Brockhampton’s fourth studio album Iridescence has made its Billboard 200 debut at No. 1 for the week ending September 27, surpassing Eminem’s former chart-topper Kamikaze. The project follows the group’s 2017 Saturation trilogy.

Elsewhere, Machine Gun Kelly’s BINGE EP has entered the chart in the Top 25 while Young Dolph’s Role Model album sits pretty at No. 15 with 30,079 total album equivalent units, 3,741 pure album sales and a streaming count of 33,537,274.

Finally, Lupe Fiasco’s DROGAS Wave struggled to make the Top 50 and landed at No. 60.

    Lustrous Debut

Brockhampton’s Iridescence project has earned this week’s Billboard crown with 101,212 total album equivalent units, 79,335 pure album sales and a streaming count of 28,827,916. The 15-track effort marks the collective’s first album since Ameer Vann’s departure following sexual misconduct and abuse allegations.

Their last project, the Saturation trilogy, was released last year and properly introduced Kevin Abstract, Merlyn Wood, Dom McLennon, Matt Champion and Russell “Joba” Boring to the world.

The project serves as the follow-up to 2017’s Bloom, which debuted at No. 8 upon its release with roughly 57,000 units sold in its first week.

      1. true. independent artists tend to make dollars off each album they sell instead of cents

still, its cool brockhampton has debuted #1

        1. Kanye makes no money off his albums he said he made no money off late registration when it went 3x platinum….with the amount he spends on sample clearances his albums are all still probably in the red…

        2. Kanye made no money off late registration when it went 3x platinum he said it himself…sample clearances and million dollar video budgets are the reason all of Kanye’s albums are still probably in the red at Def Jam

      2. How did you come to that figure?? I’m not sure he made a 100,000 from those numbers, people automatically think independent artist make more and that’s not always true. He’s not getting 10.00 per unit, cd’s barely even cost 10.00 now for a entire album. People just add up without subtracting, example like yea he got 9.00 per unit sold 11.5k equals100k he made 100k??? what about what it cost to make?? anybody that’s independent gotta pay for producers, engineers, studio time, video production, features, graphics. I wouldn’t assume he made a 100k on it not from the first week for sure, no telling how much he spent to make it.

      1. Comparing Eminem’s to Drogas is not the appropriate comparison. Now, if you said Lupe vs. Kendrick or Cole, I see your argument; however, even if you dislike Em, the .wav files (bad joke) presented on Kamikaze are meant for an entire industry, whereas Drogas is tailored for cultural consumption. As long as neither is mumble we’re good, though. So in my opinion, Kamikaze is more enjoyable to me, but it’s more of a mood thing.
