Meek Mill and Colin Kaepernick would rather be making music and playing football respectively, but life has forced them to play different roles. The rapper-turned-poster boy for prison reform and quarterback-turned-activist recently had a conversation about the former’s incarceration, which allowed Kaepernick to provide an update on Meek’s well-being.
“Spoke to Meek Mill & he wanted ppl to know regardless of his unjust situation, he’s in good spirits & humbled by the support the people have shown him,” Kaepernick tweeted on Monday (November 20). “We’ll continue to fight against the harsh sentencing practices that have affected Meek & millions of other POC for generations.”
Meek’s prison sentence for a probation violation has been heavily criticized because the prosecution did not recommend any time behind bars. The Dreamchasers founder has received a tremendous amount of support from the Hip Hop community, including JAY-Z. Meek’s lawyer has also raised questions about the judge presiding over the case, strongly suggesting she had a personal vendetta against his client.
As for Kaepernick, the former San Francisco 49ers QB has found new life as an activist since his National Anthem protest began in 2016. No NFL team has signed him for the 2017 season so far, leading many to believe he’s been blackballed by the league for his stance.
