Hip Hop Album Sales: Tekashi 6ix9ine’s “Dummy Boy” Catapults To Billboard 200 Glory

Tekashi 6ix9ine’s debut album Dummy Boy has made a monster debut at No. 2 despite his current incarceration. Although the project was initially leaked before it could be properly rolled out, that didn’t seem to impact his numbers.

Meanwhile, with Travis Scott amid his Astroworld: Wish You Were Here Tour, fans of the Houston-bred rapper are likely scooping up the Astroworld album left and right. Consequently, the project has returned to the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 for the week ending November 29. It marks the third time the album has topped the chart this year.

Elsewhere on the chart, J.I.D’s DiCaprio 2 project struggled to crack the Top 40 and lands at No. 41.

    Dum Du-Dum Dum

As Tekashi 6ix9ine sits behind the walls of a New York prison getting “G-Checked,” his debut album has made its grand entrance on the Billboard 200 at No. 2. Boasting 65,598 total album equivalent units, 10,137 pure album sales and a streaming count of 73,231,512, Dummy Boy has earned the controversial figure his highest-charting project to date.

6ix9ine is facing a slew of legal trouble and his case isn’t expected to go to trial until September 4, 2019.

The 22-year-old’s last project, the DAY69 mixtape, was released in February and peaked at No. 4. It has since by certified gold by the RIAA.

    Back On Top

With 71,048 60 total album equivalent units, 31,455 pure album sales and a streaming count of 51,953,691, Astroworld has boomeranged back to Billboard’s coveted spot. It jumps 60 percent from the No. 7 position last week.

Astroworld initially debuted at No. 1 in August, managing to dethrone Drake’s Scorpion at the same time. During its second week, it was up against Nicki Minaj’s Queen album but still held on to the top position.

Scott’s last album, 2016’s Birds In The Trap Sing McKnight, also debuted at No. 1, selling roughly 53,000 units in its first week.

    J.I.D Almost Cracks Top 40

J.I.D’s new project DiCaprio 2 has hit the chart at No. 41 with 16,970 total album equivalent units, 2,955 pure album sales and a streaming count of 2,553 18,483,519. It serves as the Spillage Village vet’s follow-up to 2015’s DiCaprio and also serves as his first studio album since 2017’s The Never Story.

DiCaprio 2 is J.I.D’s highest-charting solo project. The Never Story peaked at No. 197 upon its initial release.

    1. Sad times in America where millions of people would rather listen to a convicted pedophile than continue to show love to the new Metro Boomin album. And he said he’ll outsell everybody, but he didn’t outsell Travis Scott apparently. My man crush Drake is #1 on both charts, as a feature on Astroworld and as a feature on “Sicko Mode”. Yay Drizzy! What’s fake drug dealer Pusha T up to?

    2. How is it possible that Astro world is on top, also why did Meek Mills and lil baby album dropped all of a sudden ???? , something is seriously drake I mean fake…

    3. I feel bad a project like Dicaprio 2 didn’t get more love but at least it’s a big jump from his last album. JID has that potential to take over.

    4. Have anyone thought they’d live to see the day where the whole list of top 10 hip hop sellers are all trash? There you go!!!

    5. 10,000 albums and this site calls it glorious. Even if you assume him having the greatest record deal ever he would’ve made $100k. His album is a flop period.

      1. Yeah in album sales… he’s never made bread off of sales… he loaded because he knows how to advertise and affiliate market who needs album sales when your publicity generates money for you ? Haters can hate but they cant rack in the dough so what are they proving ?

    6. People are talking about what happened to rap and that Tekashi doesn’t deserve to be at the top. People who don’t like rap think it’s trash anyway. He fused different styles of music and infused some older-style hip hop with loud, aggressive lyrics like Onyx/Sticky Fingaz. Much of rap today sounds the same. He is doing something different. When people try to do something different, often it is not welcome. You can’t argue about his lyrics, because many rap songs that are popular don’t make sense anyway.

    7. Will there be a “Hip Hop Album Sales” article for the week ending December 6, 2018? It’s Wednesday, and these articles usually come out on Monday…
