J. Cole Or Nah? Mike Dean Calls Out Rappers Who Drop Diss Tracks To Promote Their Albums

Houston Hip Hop pioneer and longtime Kanye West collaborator Mike Dean took to Twitter today (December 6) to question the motives behind rappers releasing diss tracks right before they get ready to drop their album.

A reasonable question to ask in 2016 when so many rap beefs have dominated headlines this year, including the long drawn out beef between The Game and Meek Mill before the Compton, California rapper released his 1992 project and more recently with J. Cole’s diss record “False Prophets” being unleashed ahead of his forthcoming album, 4 Your Eyez Only.

Although Cole doesn’t name names in the rap, it’s alleged he was talking about ‘Ye, noting that the particular rapper he’s referring to was once his idol and his fall from grace is hard to watch.

“Ego in charge of every move, he’s a star,” the 31-year-old Dreamville artist raps. “And we can’t look away due to the days when he caught our hearts/He’s falling apart but we deny it/ Just to find the half-assed shit he drop, we always buy it.”

Combine the timing of the diss track and the fact that 4 Your Eyez Only is only days away from hitting the streets, fans immediately began to light up Dean’s Twitter mentions to take up for J. Cole, even though Dean didn’t name names either.

“COLE AINT LACKING HE WENT DOUBLE PLATINUM WITH NO FEATURES AND KANYE NEEDED 27 FEATURES & 42 GHOSTWRITERS FOR TLOP,” Twitter user @HoodrichMenace replied, referring to the long list of credits on The Life of Pablo.

    J. Cole is not the only artist to seemingly come after Kanye West while he’s been going through his mental health issue crisis. Ray J released his answer to West’s “Famous” visual with his own song of the same title. Drumma Boy, the producer of the Ray J track “Famous” featuring Chris Brown, assured that the timing of the release was not on purpose as the song had already been recorded before ‘Ye was hospitalized. Ray even wished Yeezy well.

Yesterday (December 5), Cole unveiled the tracklist for 4 Your Eyez Only and “False Prophets” is conveniently missing.

    1. I don’t think j cole’s false prophets was a diss track. It had a whole lot of truth to it. Diss tracks usually are comical or overly false.

      1. Lmao it’s not a diss to you because it wasn’t aimed at you. I’m sure you would take it personally if someone basically called you a phony, talked about your mental state, discredited your work and basically said your music doesn’t cut it nowadays.

    2. Whether it’s a ‘diss’ or not, rappers just mention each other way too much. Back when rap was serious, there was a level of intense competition where your lyrics and your records showed everyone how you felt and where you stood. It wasn’t necessary to speak on everything that every other rapper did. These guys now, they’re either dissing each other or massaging each other’s ego. To me, it’s just another gimmick to camouflage a lack of skills and content. These dudes sit around like girls, waiting for other rappers to mention them, constantly checking to see what people said about them. That used to be considered bitch shit, but I guess times have really changed.

      1. I know that’s the truth. When dudes mentioned each other back in the day, it was some real shit that already went down.

    3. No diss I think he was just speaking out loud what a lot of folks been thinking but we’re scared to say it. Cole ain’t lacking, mike deans tripping. Cole figured out that he ain’t have to play the game by anyone’s rules except his own.

    4. its a diss callin his new music trash wale insecure true or not still a diss lmfao and this is different then those other beefs this shit came out of nowhere on some im disappointed in u shit

    5. Love J.Cole, love Kanye. J.Cole’s feelings are hurt and once again wants to point out that people in general are disappointing (no role models, nobody’s perfect, false prophets, and he himself when he let Nas down). Some optimism please J.Cole, ppl like you make the world even more “Cole”

    6. Cole will never be a goat. How do you drop just a 10 track album to cement ur position in history as great rapper. i wont gv him props for this album although I haven’t heard it yet. Cole can never save rap. Biggie pac and the 90s rappers will judge us if we call this cole EP a good album

      1. NO artist from any genre gets paid for more than 10 songs.
every song after 10 is free
look it up. 10 or more songs is an LP 1 to 5 is a single 6 to 8 is an EP

      2. You won’t give him props for the album even though you haven’t heard it yet? Your entire post makes negative sense. Who said he’s trying to save rap? Please shut your fat mouth

    7. Kanye fell off and Cole calling him out. Ain’t nothing wrong with that since any publicity is good publicity. Right, Kanye’s wife?

    8. Mike Dean really you fucking sound stupid and if you can’t post even a fake name to the anon that hiding behind his laptop you probably think Soulja boy got bars your a fucking idiot and if you listen the song he mentions no names why is it when someone says what’s going on is bullshit how are they throwing shade ask yourself how many times you turn off the radio because there’s nonsense playin this era ain’t hip hop it’s bullshit tracks over subpart breasts…..

    9. I don’t understand why every one is so hyped about this shit. Cole is a kanye fan and he said what we all basically felt. What’s the problem in sharing your views? He didn’t even say “f@ck Kanye”. He just said that Kanye fall off isn’t near around his classic material (808 & heartbreaks, college dropout etc). I still don’t see a problem. No friggin’ idea. He mentioned Wale as well, but as I saw on twitter, Wale released a track in response and Cole and Wale still stand on same ground. It wasn’t even a friggin’ diss.

      1. It’s the timing of it. Why couldn’t Cole do this a month ago or after Kanye’s TLOP? He does it a week before his album drops just to spark attention. That’s the problem. And at least Kanye has made classics. Cole needs to button his lips up and focus on his own music.

    10. J. Cole Stans are fucking hilarious! J.Cole has not made 1 great song ever, they all just “decent”. Then he pull a The Game and attack a rapper right b4 his project drop, don’t put the song on his album and y’all fall for it. Same fuckers who watch wrestling and root for them. Hilarious!

    11. J. Cole has actually been one of the few who has been able to get and hold my attention for some time now. Somehow the music has actually become a game from a culture. It has become fairly sensitive and cute. I appreciate J. Cole and his real music and actually saying something. Mic Drop….
