Quelle Chris is like many artists who haven’t attained mainstream fame: they’re often labeled or put in a box by the public in order to distinguish who they are from the field since so many rappers are out there.
The Detroit native recently spoke with HipHopDX about being tagged as an underground artist. Chris explained how the box media and the public try to put artists in doesn’t make any sense to him.
“Right now within rock and within Hip Hop I think it happens more than anything, where as, ‘You’re this type of rock artist or you’re this type of rock artist,'” he said via a segment of today’s (July 16) DX Daily. “I kind even more understand it with rock but in Hip Hop, we separate ourselves so much and then we adhere to those separations as if they’re some sort of law. It doesn’t make any sense.”

Quelle Chris also relayed that being called “underground” hurts the chances of potential fans because the stigma of the word he believes is a negative connotation.
“I’m not underground,” he said. “I’m an artist that knows all these artists that you think are overground and there are artists that are overground or artists you consider underground making more money than artists that are overground so it doesn’t make any sense. Why are we separating? It only limits the thought of the average buyer who’s looking for some music.”
