In 1986 Run-DMC recorded Walk This Way, a rock-rap collaboration that shot to the top of the charts. The DMC version was a remake of the original Aerosmith song, but when Steven Tyler and Joe Perry performed it with the now legendary rap trio, it became Run-DMC’s first hit.

Legend has it that Jam Master Jay was working on sampling the opening break from an Aerosmith album when producer Rick Rubin heard it. This gave Rubin the idea to have Run-DMC cover the song. The band didn’t like the idea, but Rubin grew up in the suburbs listening to groups like Aerosmith, and knew it would be a great way for the group to crossover to a white audience.

At the time, the novelty of two different genres merging to create music was enough to make the song a hit; accepted by the mullet-headed and flat-topped alike.
