New York, NY

Joey Bada$$ has been beefing with Troy Ave since 2015, a rivalry that heated up again last month when the two exchanged another series of disses.

The Brooklyn, New York rapper says he hasn’t gained any insight from the rivalry.

“Ain’t no perspective,” Joey Bada$$ says during an exclusive interview with HipHopDX. “I’m not the one who learned the lesson. I just taught it.”

Joey Bada$$ does have some perspective on his performance at Coachella yesterday (April 15), though.

“It means a lot,” he says. “I’m extremely honored. To perform at the main stage of Coachella has been one of my dreams upon entering the Rap game. I’m extremely honored to have [a spot] on the main stage in basically the third or fourth year of my career. You can’t ask for more.”

The rapper wanted to give his longtime fans a new wrinkle with his Coachella performance, so he performed new material and with a live band for the first time.

“Every time I perform, I like to give people something that’s relatively new,” he says. “Some of these kids, they’ve come out to see me three, four times, so this time I’d like to give them something that they’ve never [seen from] me before and that’s a live band. I’m excited to debut that on the Coachella stage.”

Joey Bada$$ Sustains Longstanding Mtn Dew Relationship

Even though Joey Bada$$ remains independent, his brand remains robust given his pitchman status Calvin Klein, his role on the television show Mr. Robot and his slot as a performer at this summer’s The Governors Ball Music Festival

On Thursday (April 14), Joey Bada$$ attended the national launch party of Mtn Dew Black Label at Parlor in New York City. He’s been working with the Mtn Dew family of products for about four years and they’re one of the first companies he did a deal with.

Mtn Dew Black Label is a carbonated soft drink made with real sugar, crafted dark berry flavor and herbal bitters. The company says it “offers DEW drinkers a taste of the high life.”

Once he got invited to the event, Joey Bada$$ says he was eager to attend.

“When they told me about this event and what it represented, I thought it was the perfect match,” he says. “They’re pretty much family already, so I made it happen.”
