Jay 305 recorded his “Thuggin” single long before it was released.

“I did it two years ago, before I went to jail,” the Los Angeles rapper says during an interview with HipHopDX’s editor-in-chief Justin Hunte at Los Angeles radio station Power 106’s Powerhouse 2015 concert. The clip premiered in the DX Daily Friday (May 22).

“I got out,” Jay 305 continues. “I was like, ‘You know what? It’s a good record, good timing, and everything.’”

Jay 305, who was incarcerated on a gun charge, knew that the song needed a tweak or two before it was released, though, given that he recorded it before he was locked up.

“We just updated the beat a little bit and just threw it out there, see what people thought about it,” he says of the DJ Mustard-produced song that also features Joe Moses. “It’s a real street record.”
