When Jay-Z went on Hot 97 to debut a verse from his song titled “Dear Summer” nobody knew how big it could end up being. The funny thing about the situation was that Jigga was retired and had nowhere to put the song… until now.
“First time I heard it was when he did the last S. Carter [mixtape],” Just Blaze said to MTV. “[He was rapping] to that beat for the tennis shoe commercial Green Lantern did the beat for. When he finished the song, [engineer Young] Guru went to stop the beat and Jay was like, ‘Nah, keep it going.’ He started spitting that rhyme out of nowhere. So it just sat there forever and then he spit it that one day on the radio. Then he was like, ‘I want to do it as a song, but I have nowhere to put it.’ “
While the song has made its rounds on mixtapes, it has finally found a home on Memphis Bleek’s 5,3,4 album. While it may seem strange that Jay lands an entire song on Bleek’s album, many may remember Jigga giving Memph an entire song on Vol. 2…Hard Knock Life.
Look for 5,3,4 later this month.
