Pete Rock recently contributed a song titled “Back in The New York Groove” to CBS’ new show NYC 22, appearing in the pilot episode. During an interview with CBS, the veteran producer explained how the collaboration came to be and why he decided to compose for the series.

“I was fortunate enough to get a call from Rich Kleiman and he had a conversation with my management and we went back and for through email and got on the phone with each other and had a great conversation about doing something for TV,” said PR. “I immediately got excited and was like, calm down. What else do you need me to do? I was already on board. I was just happy to be a part of it.”

The song samples ex-Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley’s “New York Groove.” In roughly 10 minutes, Pete worked with studio musicians on the cut and felt like he had something of substance. The people behind show, produced by Robert De Niro, gave PR an idea of what to do and he ran with it.

“Once CBS gave me an idea of where to go with it, I took it to the musicians with the idea and said try this. Immediately, in about five, 10 minutes, we thought we had something that was great, that we thought we were confident in that CBS would like.”
