Hopsin Calls Funk Volume “A Virus To My Career, My Life And My Financial Situation”

Hopsin announced his departure from Funk Volume earlier this month and aired at least some of his issues with former business partner Damien Dame Ritter on his “ILL Mind of Hopsin 8” single, which he released March 8.

The Panorama City, California rapper is moving forward with his own Undercover Prodigy company.

“Things are good right now,” Hopsin says during an interview with Home Grown Radio. “It’s sad that Funk Volume had to end, but I just couldn’t be a part of something that was such a virus to my career, my life and my financial situation as well. Things are way better. Things are moving so smooth and everything’s perfect, to be honest.”

What isn’t perfect, though, is his relationship with former Funk Volume artists.

“I’m still cool with Jarren Benton, but there’s some tension in the air, man, because everybody’s Team Dame strong and he has them all blinded over there. So, it’s some tension there, so I don’t know.”

On March 8 after the release of “ILL Mind of Hopsin 8,” Damien Dame Ritter hosted a spreecast in which he said that he knew when the break-up of Funk Volume started. “Telling Hop ‘You don’t work hard’ was the trigger,” Ritter said at the time.

“All this stuff happened pretty abruptly,” Ritter added. “There weren’t issues that were lingering for a long time, at least that I knew of. We never had big fights. We never had arguments.”

Ritter also said he never stole Hopsin’s money. “I never stole any money from Hopsin,” Ritter said at the time. “We have a business manager that sends us our payments, especially when album royalties get cut. Hopsin’s on every e-mail. He knows when I get paid. I know when he gets paid.”

During the Home Grown Radio interview, Hopsin dismisses Ritter’s overall sentiment.

“Shut up to that fuckin’ bullshit,” Hopsin says. “Tell everybody the reason why Dizzy Wright, Jarren Benton, DJ Hoppa weren’t getting paid for those meet and greets we did every single day, 100 people every day for 60-some days. How come he got paid for the meet and greets, but the artists didn’t get paid? This guy tried to bank $50,000 off the tour from meet and greets that we were doing. He wasn’t there on the meet and greets. The artists who were doing meet and greets were not getting paid for meet and greets. How do you justify that?”

Hopsin: “Everybody Was All Ready To Ride On Dame”

Hopsin says that he, Dame and the label got paid for the meet and greets, but not the artists. He also says that the public front put up by Dizzy Wright, Jarren Benton and DJ Hoppa is not consistent with their feelings when they learned of the money issues.

“The fucked up thing about it all is everybody was all ready to ride on Dame when we was on tour, like ‘What the fuck?…I ain’t doing these meet and greets,’” Hopsin says. “Everybody’s getting mad. Now all the sudden everybody’s just playing it cool like, ‘Oh. I don’t want to hurt Dame’s feelings.’ Fuck that shit. Let’s keep it real. Let’s be completely honest. Everybody was uncomfortable and nobody’s saying shit and I look like the crazy one. But they were not getting goddamn penny from the meet and greets, not one cent from the meet and greets. Damien Ritter was taking the fucking money. I got a percentage from the meet and greets and they were complaining about it. They were like, ‘Why are we out here if we’re not even making a dollar of the meet and greets? At least $1, $2.’”

As for his relationship with the former Funk Volume crew, Hopsin says he’s good.

“As far as I know, I’m cool with everybody, but I know me and Jarren, we have a relationship, a cool relationship that’s not gonna be broken,” he says. “But the other dudes, they don’t call. They don’t really keep in touch…I’ve been reaching out to them. I try to stay on top, but it’s only like me trying…I don’t reach out to Dame. Fuck Dame. He’s done. He’s a non-factor in my life.”

Regardless of what happens with the other members of his former Funk Volume crew, Hopsin says he’s moving on with Undercover Prodigy.

“I can just tell when I’m unwanted, so I’m just doing my own thing,” he says. “I don’t really need them. I wish them the best of luck, but I’m just going to do my own thing now. I’m done reaching out. If they want to reach out to me, they can do whatever but there’s definitely tension the air. I’m not cool with Dame. I dislike the man so much to where if they roll with him, they become him to me and that’s just the way it is. When you’re rolling with the enemy, you’re low-key becoming the enemy.”

    1. I feel hopsins only got famous cuz of tech and his ill mind series … If he could put the same amount of emotion in is albums

      1. Talented clown. Have to respect his talent and skill. Every Hopsin song you’ve ever heard, every album he’s put out, was done 100% by Hopsin. Produces all his own material. Can’t hate!

    2. I feel Hopsin though. unless they are signed to a 360 . why is dame getting more then at most 20% for meet and greets also he cant be the label and the manager thats double dipping. thats common sense. unless you smoke too much. Dame does have some explaining to do. tht sounds like cats are ok with being pimped and exploited. The true percentage of dames cuts are something I would like to see go public.I mean if you are taking a managers fee then how much of a label cut are you taking also. The key is where are they incorporated at. different states have different laws . May be some legal recourse here. Also Hopsin should not of disabled a brand like that they could of split in two and operated differently. I mean Sony Rca are really the same company.Minorities have to learn to be wiser when it comes to business

    3. I’m siding with hopsin on this. Sounds like he’s the only one man enough to do what’s right and get the fuck outta there. Ill mind of hopsin 8 is crazy too!

    4. Hop is one of the realest out right now. He makes you deep think about things that never occurred for people to think about. As a college graduate I never questioned if the guy who invented college go to college. That’s some next level shit right there. This dude’s mind goes into some far off places that the human mind isn’t meant to go to, but Hopsin being the next level thinker that he is questions things like that.

    5. why are we covering Hopsin so tough? what relevance has he held and currently hold? lets cover artists that are current and making a difference
