Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 8/19/2012

As early reports indicated, 2 Chainz’ solo debut scored a #1 overall album. The longtime member of Playaz Circle, f/k/a Titty Boi re-emerged throughout the last 24 months into one of the biggest career comebacks of the last decade. Based On A T.R.U. Story gives 2 Chainz the highest chart placement of his career, beating out the group’s best by over 27 places. Following success of albums by Frank Ocean, Nas and Rick Ross, this also continues Def Jam Records’ powerful summer run of multiple Top 3 debuts, with all but Frank grabbing #1’s.

Two veteran acts within the Rap community, Insane Clown Posse and Kottonmouth Kings debuted on the charts. Both cult-followed indie acts secured Top 40 debuts. Last week K.M.K. released Mile High on the news of a tragic death of a former member, Pakelika.

    2 Chainz Based On A T.R.U. Story Goes #1

2 Chainz’ Based On A T.R.U. Story was the solo debut of the Atlanta, Georgia rapper. His Def Jam release features Kanye West, Drake, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Scarface and Mike Posner, to name a few. Production on the effort met with mixed reviews is by Bangladesh, Carlos “6 July” Broady, The-Dream and West’s ensemble.

The album is supported by singles “No Lie” and “Birthday Song.”

Tyga & Nicki Minaj Climb The Charts Waving The Young Money Flag

Two releases from earlier this year made a strong surge during last week’s sales accounting. Nicki Minaj’s sophpmore album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded climbed 22 places to #26. The April album continues to be the highest-selling of 2012 Hip Hop releases.

Minaj’s Young Money Records label-mate, Tyga, also got a strong surge. The California native’s own sophomore release, Careless World: Rise Of The Last King rose 21 spots. The February release was one of the year’s first Rap Top 5 debuts. This week, Tyga announced plans for his third solo release, Hotel California.

    1. If Wayne hates new York so much why the fuck does he keep going their then get the fuck out and stay the fuck out Wayne you have been officially kicked out of the state and to every one on here that hates ymcmb we need to support real hiphop again and head to the stores and by cds again and we should put that new nas album over a a couple of millions like we did back in the day and we should support dmx when his album drops and put him at 2.5 million in a short week and keep it going to shut these stupid niggas at ymcmb down the more the album sales we have the better the radio will be and ymcmb would be done and so would mmg new York would be back on top again fuck the souths pop music

      1. you’re the true def of a hata. the south crushing the game and been doing it for over 15 years. you pussies best believe that we aint going no where, and we will continue to outshine your favorite artist! BIIIIIIIIIITCH in that order!!!!!!!!!!!!

      2. You think your favorite artist will outshine my favorite artist my favorites go like this. Biggie pac nas ice cube dmx scarface jadakiss and I ain’t even from new York I’m from new Orleans bitch that’s a gansta catlouge biiiiiiiiiiiiitch

    2. If you want to get hiphop back we need to stop just buying digital we need to buy it i n the stores two and cut these ymcmb niggas out of the picture

      1. of course he gonna sale more than nas what you think these kids want to listen to bitches cant hold me back or baby bye bye?

      2. @ The 4th Anonymous,

I understand where you are coming from. But it really sucks though because I think as far as quality goes, Bye Baby is better than Hold Me Back.

      1. Hey, you can’t blame them. They have a pretty strong fan base for an independent act.

    3. Hiphop ain’t dead you are still listining to it its just the choices people are making is wack supporting garbage its all an idea that the artist and their managers come up with and their parent company comes up with and they put it out their and people by it we allow this music to be played we have control of what they do but we don’t stand up to it if you say its dead then support real hiphop and buy nas album and tell your friends to buy it and put him over a million and when dmx drops his album put him at 2.5 million in a short week and 3 million by the end of that short week and we would have a better sound on the air waves and mmg and ymcmb would be out of the picture tell all your friends to do that and tell them to tell their friends to do that and hiphop would be back new yourk style its just that simple and if you must know hiphopdx said that the album release date is September 11 if thats true let’s make that happen 2.5 million in a short week and 3 million by the end of the week

    4. No it goes with this post two bc it mentioned nas in it and ymcmb did you read the whole thing and yes fuck wayne he is garbage and so is ymcmb and mmg

    5. LOL @ them sales.

Only one up there with a prayer of going gold is Rick Ross and with all that promotion he shoulda done better. The rest these dudes, LOL, better kiss your family goodbye and get that 300 days a year tour money, only way your getting paid with numbers like that

    6. A fake fat untalented fuck like Rick Ross is outselling Nas smh. I listen to God Forgives and it was mediocre at best.

      1. mediocre at best stop hating. You might not like the man but mediocre hell naw. The beats along put the album over average.

      2. ^^^ The beats on GFID sound like lesser versions of the beats on all his other albums. I could care less bout his Past, but his new album is boring, hiphoplost was being generous when he called it mediocre, I’d of just said it sucked

      3. It’s all about opinion. Numbers are great so alot of people like it, so it’s good, it’s not some people cup of tea but that means you don’t like it doesnt mean it’s shit. Why not let people enjoy it. It’s sells well, alot of people enjoy it so it’s good, because everyone don’t like it don’t mean it’s shit. Schoolkidz need educating.

    7. LOL NIGGAZ FLOPPED, KHALED WILL GO GOLD 1ST WEEK NIGGA, ROSS WILL GO PLAT THEN SIGN TO THE CASH MONEY BLOOD GANG WE STR8 WINNING BLOOD

    8. LOOOL,RAZAY WINNING ON ALL FRONT.HOW COME WEN YALL FAKE ASS FAVOURITE RAPPER DO ROZAY NUMBERS THEY ARE KILLIN THE CHART,BUT WHEN ROZAY DO THE SAME NUMBERS HE IS FLOPPIN.U INTERNET THUGS N CRITICS ARE SO STUPID.HOPE U ALL DIE SOME MISERABLE DEATH!

      1. you fake bitch! This is why Rick False had major promotion meaning major $$$$ was spent. ex young jeezy did more than ross 1 week with no promotion. Ross has to sell more to get out of the red. And how is the hottest in the game has not 1 platinum album? you know why becuase he’s a fraud ass police ass fake drug lord ass nigga! and you support this coward so what does that say about you? you a pussy boy

    9. LAUGHTERHOUSE 600,000 NEXT WEEK BITCHES

JOELL ORTIZ RUNS THIS GAME LIKE THE WHITE CASTLE GREASE RUNS DOWN HIS TWO CHINZ

    10. Rozay bout to go gold. All you hatin ass niggas Ross hottest nigga in the game.

      Bawse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    11. ICP coming in at #4 on Billboard charts… I know they have ALOT of haters, but ANY hip hop fan should respect this… thats really amazing as an indie label!

      1. Even though I’m not an ICP fan, still, I can’t argue with this comment. But, of course, there are those lowlife trolls who don’t know the difference between mainstream and independent will argue that they flopped. But, like I said, trolls are lowlifes, so what they say don’t matter.

      2. Word, that caught me off guard
Sign of the times I guess since an album with only 41,000 sold would be a top 5 album. Nonetheless, their fans support them.
        No hate, respect

    12. I wonder WHY THE HELL you can’t post all of the numbers from top 200, for example Drake is missing, Take Care landed at number 37 selling 9,600 copies

and 2 Chainz, congratulations, personally I don’t like his album (well, the mixtapes were better) that much, but I don’t really know why everybody is hating on 2 Chainz, he is basically one of the hottest rappers right now, he knows how to pick beats and even on tracks when he boasts or raps about nothing he sounds good and has special flow and voice, I feel the energy off that and he really worked his ass of last time, it is so sad that people claiming themselves as a “real hip hop fan” are hating on him so much

hip hop is dead not because of 2 Chainz album but because of dumbass “fans” hating on him and being so mad for his number one album, yall should be happy for every rapper topping the charts, so the genre will be never dead

      1. you literally just said 2chains songs where he talks about nothing there still good songs, WHAT THE FUCK. also he is not hip hop he is some faggot bitch hip POP

    13. DEF JAM is going to shit. They sign the most garbage fuckin artists nowadays. Shame on them for having 2 Chainz and Thick Ross on their label. That is a fuckin joke. How is 2 Stainz gonna have the same first week sales as NAS? WTF is this world coming to? You little kids are fuckin morons buying this garbage, like Thick Ross and 2 Stainz. I wanna stab Thick Ross in his stomach and watch hot dogs pop out.

      1. @Bizzalls I know your hating and all but even in that you should never call another man thick. its homo and not even that funny. But with the name like bizzalls my expectations are too high I guess.

      2. we can only pray rick ross’s heart gives out soon so we dont have to listen to his shit music and saying that he’s the new biggie smalls, get the fuck outta here with that shit u fat fuck

    14. Back then Nas and all them old ass rappers went platinum because you HAD TO buy an album to hear the artist. Now its all on the internet. REAL artists are the ones that can go Platinum in a week TWICE in this day & age. Like none other than KIGN WEEZY F. BABY!

      YMCMB!

      1. im ate but must say they have been botlegging shit since like 92 93. rapperswas bitching back then…album sales down bcuz the tlent is weak an pl buy into ya brand now not yur music. now some still sell records and ross not one of em well he get ok numbers but it is too much hype around mmg for those weak sales..he got carter 3 exposure an j cole numbers..good for cole an bad for ross who posed to be the bawse

    15. TOO BAD THOSE WHO BOUGHT 2 CHAINZ ALBUM REALIZED ITS WACK AS MUDAFUKA WHEN THEY GET TO TRACK 8 AND THURTHER … PWUAHAHAHAHAH

    16. Props to 2chainz. Didnt expect him to sell that well but I do feel sorry for those who supported his album. If only major labels wud actually find underground talent and promote it the way they did 2chainz.

    17. it makes me want to vomit the fact that 2 chainz album sold almost the same as Nas ‘life is good’ first week.

    18. 911,000 albums sold in The United States alone by Tyga and Nicki Minaj. Not counting all the other albums in the catalog, singles and foreign sales, they have sold almost a million sold in only 25 weeks (half a year). If you count sales from singles, Nicki and Tyga have sold almost 6 million of those. YMCMB seem to be doing good business for 2012.

    19. only good album up there is nas. the only other good artist up there is frank ocean though i wasnt a huge fan of his album. the rest is fucking hip POP gay shit, fuck 2 chainz, fuck fat cunt rick ross, fuck nicki minaj and all the faggot cash money fuckheads and most of all FUCK FLO RIDA why would hip hop dx even show that shit.

      1. Bitch, u just contradicted urself. U singled out Fag Ocean and called the rest gay? How dumb are u now pussy?

    20. big ups to rick ross he has the best album ofthe year so far and yes everybody its better than nas album nobody wants to hear him cry about his ex wife lol and gfid may hit platinum gold is a for sure lock!

      1. Ross gets props from his followers for his beats, which I don’t think are any better than Nas’ latest and high profile features. Now you’re left with rhymes, content, flow, creativity…Ross’ album is not even close in those areas.

    21. LOOOL,ROZAY WINNING ON ALL FRONTS.HOW COME WEN YALL FAKE ASS FAVOURITE RAPPER DO ROZAY NUMBERS THEY ARE KILLIN THE CHART,BUT WHEN ROZAY DO THE SAME NUMBERS HE IS FLOPPIN.FOR SOME REASON U FOOLS KNOW THE EXACT AMOUNT HE SPENT ON MARKETING GFID,BUT YALL DONT KNOW HOW MUCH U OWE ON UR CREDITCARD.IF YALL DONT LIKE ROZAY DONT LISTEN TO HIS SHIT OR READ NEWS ABOUT HIM.I DONT LIKE 50CENT,BUT YALL NEVER GONNA HEAR ME LISTENING OR COMMENTING ABOUT HIS MUSIC.U INTERNET THUGS N CRITICS ARE SO STUPID.HOPE U ALL DIE SOME MISERABLE DEATH!

      1. Well, compare the numbers of MTV’s previous “hottest rappers in the game” to the numbers that Ross is doing. Take a look and tell me if Ross is doing the numbers he’s supposed to. Most #1’s on MTV’s hot list hit near 400K first week.

    22. Ross is finally showing some staying power. I usually give Nas a hard time, but 260,000 isn’t bad. If he had better singles, he’d probably be selling more.
