Maybach Music Group – Self Made Vol. 2

“If Michael Jackson came alive right now, he’d ask you to smoke one for him. So in his honor [puffs].”

Rick Ross utters those words as an introduction to Self Made Vol. 2, which probably ascribes undue importance to the album, but perfectly exemplifies Rick Ross’ style. MMG’s head honcho has made it clear: boasts and boats, Beamers and Benzes—these are the things that make Rick Ross’ personality even bigger than his ample frame. Interestingly, though, Rick Ross has proven that there’s more to him than meets the eye (and ear) via his executive decisions. While Meek Mill falls in line with Ross’ aesthetic, D.C. native Wale and Ohioan Stalley decidedly do not. In all, Rick Ross has assembled an interesting collective, and accordingly gets interesting results.

“Power Circle” seems at first glance to be a challenging introduction, coming in at a cumbersome eight-plus minutes, but it’s actually a pretty smooth listen. The quintessential posse cut, Gunplay, Stalley, Wale, Meek Mill and Rick Ross give their varying takes on success. What’s particularly interesting is that it’s not a uniform discussion from each artist. For examle, Stalley, who has yet to release a debut album, explains how he is one of the few to escape the conditions of his community; he’s not too far from those humble beginnings, and it’s appropriate for him to address them as such. Wale, on the other hand, is onto a different level of self-reflection, afforded to him by his having been in the game for a number of years. Throw in understated but triumphant production and a Kendrick Lamar guest spot, and “Power Circle” is everything that’s right about MMG.

“Black Magic” is on the opposite end of the spectrum, as producer Young Shun completely jacks the Ace Hood/Lex Luger “Hustle Hard” sound, which is quickly becoming its own narrow, horrible genre of repetitive banality these days. “This Thing of Ours” is markedly better, with moody, lush production that once again gives the artists room to bring their own style and rhetoric to the table. Rick Ross doles out his boss-talk, with reflection focusing on his rise to success, while Wale wonders about Hip Hop standards and the absolute inordinate amount of hate that comes his way. Nas assists with a slick verse—he’s rediscovered top form as of late—and MMG newcomer Omarion provides a smooth hook to boot.

Perhaps the presence of French Montana is what make both “All Birds” and “Actin Up” so unimpressive (it certainly doesn’t help), but neither cut advances the album’s cause, and finds MMG falling back into its worst tendencies. The same can be said of “I Be Puttin’ On,” and suddenly the project is dragging in halfway through. Still, Rick Ross does some heave lifting on “The Zenith” and “Fountain of Youth,” which play to his aesthetic, but still offer a trace of nuance that makes his subject matter much more interesting: “My nigga did a dime, didn’t learn a thing from it / Came home, in two weeks, got him a 600 / Get a text from the boss, you know them bricks comin’ / Chicks at the beach house like they gon’ miss somethin’ /  From the trenches I rose, only lovin the dough / …Smokin’ the truth, that’s my fountain of youth.” Other than “Let’s Talk,” which makes a lazy, hollow use of a Notorious B.I.G. vocal sample, the album closes quite nicely, with minimal speed bumps.

Self Made Vol. 2 is a noted improvement from its predecessor. Aside from Rick Ross’ innate ability to choose great production and guest features, the project features Ross’ vision for his Maybach Music Group squad: a diverse collection of individuals whose differences are complimentary. If the crew can manage to keep from occasionally lapsing into predictability, it’ll be a force to be reckoned with for quite some time.

    1. Omarion brought this from a 4 to a 3.5 for me too. Everything else was an improvement.

And Stalley is so fucking amateur.

    2. SAME SHIT DIFFERENT DAY
YOU KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT WITH WILLIAM

MMG HAS NO ORIGINALITY AT ALL

MOST OVER HYPED PEOPLE IN HIP HOP RIGHT NOW

THIS SHIT SHOULD BE DOWNLOADED AND BOOTLEGGED FUCK SUPPORTING THAT FRAUD

    3. hell yeahhhh niggaz! Rick Ross steady rise in hip hop to arguably the best rapper in da game has been interesting to witness. he became da most sought after rapper since Tupac Amaru Shakur was in his prime. da album is well put together and is one of the best label showcases in quite a while. da production, needless to say, is of da highest quality. dis is something weve come to expect wit anything affiliated with Rick Ross. 3rd best album of da year after Nicki Minaj and Tyga. swag

    4. there isn’t really one thing bad about the album, its decent all around, just not amazing.

      3.5 at the very least.

    5. Its almost as if the loss of authenticity has freed him to push the Rick Ross character to its utmost extreme

Rick Ross has done something that the Beastie Boys could not: By charging in two directions at oncetowards authenticity and artificehe has smuggled duality into the rap marketplace. Ross is running a double hustle. Hes hustling those who believe in his overt persona by convincing them that hes a drug dealer. Hes also hustling those who recognize his phoniness, and its this second hustle thats more intricate. What does he gain by calling attention to the hustle itself? He gains admiration for his hustling, and that, in turn, validates his hustling. By pretending to be a hustler, he actually becomes one

    6. This is the best-written article in a long time on this site. I only noticed one spelling error. And there are not a lot of wasted words nor cliches nor inappropriate references. I like when the author does not seem to be a middle school/high school student.

      Keep up the improvement, DX.

    7. Man oh man…Hiphopdx is so predictable in their reviews. There are just certain artists that are hated and loved no matter what they do and the bias is so obvious. This album got a robbed at least a half-star because it is Rick Ross and the site bleeds with this regressive 93/94-era hip-hop nostalgia. Its the same shit you did to Drake. Yeah. Hiphopdx tries to be fair but it is just hates Ross. Its all because of the silly authenticity arguement? Ross may have been a PO but who really cares? That doesnt mean he doesnt make dope music. Dr. Dre and Ice Cube both have questionable paths which dont align well with their gansta-posturing but they still made great music. I grew up on some Rakim,Ice Cube, ACTQ, De La and Wu-Tang but I can appreciate Ross’ raw talent for catchy hooks but this website just has their favorites (Roots, El-P, Kendrick Lamar, Action Bronson, underground ‘lyrical”/”ghetto pseudo-intellectual” subliminal hip-hop artist etc.) and their most hated people on earth (Rick Ross, Meek Mill, Drake, YMCMB, whatever artists is too popular for these “too cool for school” hip-hop geeks etc.)

Rick Ross is killing it because most people are not wrapped up in the personal aspects of artists or their “authenticity” which is BS for most hip-hop artists anyways. People just listen to his music and hear his blunt lines which are just gems. Its not supposed to be subliminal – its simple and blunt – thats his strength. I was just listening to his mixtape the other day when he said “My teacher said I was would be a peice of shit.. saw her the other day… riding a peice of shit”. Not “ghetto intellect”, just straight simple and to the point. He just has amazing great one-liners. Not everyone needs to be a NaS/Ghostface. The critics need to focus less on hip-hop music as a academic excercise on who they like or hate, their background or who they are and instead, evaluate the music itself. Maybach is just making higher quality music. This album is dope. Haters will always hate – thats why they do not achieve and geek out on the boring “sophisticated” albums like the Roots’ shit which makes them feel smart and like they found something esoteric. Who cares? I grew up on that backpack era stuff but Rick Ross is just dope – I cant deny it. Hiphopdx you need to wake-up and stop trying to keep up this phony “real hip-hop” flag. Thats not what the art is about. If Ice Cube or Dre were on the come-up today, youd be dismissing them with these pseudo-politically correct reviews…no doubt. Its all been done before. Haters are never remembered. Give Ross his proper props.

      1. I read the first line of all your gabble “Hiphopdx is so predictable in their reviews” the reason these type of albums get shit reviews is because the type of albums are SHIT!!!

      2. @Absurd true that.Just look at underground albums and mainstream reviews. So predictable,Nobody questions KRIT wack repetative hooks or singing and nearly got a perfect album from hhdx.People must realise that being undergroung does no signal superiority. Its time to review mainstream rap for what it is

      3. “ABSURD REAL HIP-HOP CORNBALLS” oh dude you seem really smart, but a lot of your comment is just bollocks… ok HipHopDX gave Drake bullshit reviews but what Officer Ricky is doing right now is riding that wave Puffy started of making bragadocious HipHop terribly before Puffy people did it with taste, now it’s just all the same redundant shit.

      4. To the Dumbass, loquacious, quasi-erudite dude above. Did you even notice that Hiphopdx gave it a GOOD review? last time I checked 3.5 out of 5 was dope. So that kind renders your whole exegesis moot and irrelevant hungh? Fuck outta here..Ross is dope. Wale is nice. Stalley definately needs work on his delivery, but his contennt and subject matter is refreshing. Gunplay is ass. Meek has definately gotten better..and has the most charisma besides ross. Overall..if that add one more heavy hitter..MMG could be a problem for years to come.

      5. Study some quality Hip Hop dummy before you decide to write a book on DX Fat ass Ross is garbage only his music save’s him and this album is terrible.

    8. i thought the first self made album was pretty good cause it had songs like Tupac Back, Imma Boss, 600 Benz, J. Cole feature on Fitted Caps, By Any Means, and Self Made this one is full of forgettable songs

    9. wouldnt waste my hard drive space on this….i mean black magic is horrible…the same old shit just a different day

    10. the only reason rick ross is good is because of his business acumen in marketing his brand his content on the album is basically based around materialism which is the same thing

    11. its one or the other with mmmg miami strip club beats or jazz beats when its time to sound like he spitting some heart felt shit no real hip hop grab the mic mc beats.

    12. Black Magic is on the opposite end of the spectrum, as producer Young Shun completely jacks the Ace Hood/Lex Luger Hustle Hard sound, which is quickly becoming its own narrow, horrible genre of repetitive banality these days

    13. Perhaps the presence of French Montana is what make both All Birds and Actin Up so unimpressive (it certainly doesnt help), but neither cut advances the albums cause, and finds MMG falling back into its worst tendencies. The same can be said of I Be Puttin On, and suddenly the project is dragging in halfway through

    14. If your actually intelligent then you will think like me, it doesn’t matter whether this sells 1k in the first week or 1mil it’s still WACK!!!

      1. hahaha how terrible this dude argument is so he’s saying that every single rich person is loving this album and every broke person hates it? no that ain’t the division in opinion everybody that wants music to make them think will hate this and the dumb fucks that aren’t capable of thinking will follow like sheep and love it.

      2. Yea u broke fags cant relate to Ross’s music because he talks about money (albeit in a lyrical way). Fuck yawl elitist backpacking homos thinking every underground rapper is God and this is coming from a 90s head.

      3. Majority of the hating ass homosexuals on this site does complain they cant relate to ross’s song cause he talks about money. If u broke, you will never be able to relate to it. Ross makes good music. I dont want to hear Nas’s daughters or Kdot’s hiipower in club when I am busy popping bottles and throwing money for the models. Fuck yawl broke bitch ass niggas.

    15. I don’t hear wack when I listen to this album.

what’s wrong with you guys ? he has a balance of trap music and boom bap on here.

    16. Schoolboy Q – Habits & Contradictions

When stuff like this has came out this year, why the fuck would you listen to this album?

      1. wow didn’t expect to see an intelligent person on THIS review co-sign “Section.80 HiiiPoWer”

      2. Co-sign!!!!!! I couldn’t agree more. Ab-Soul’s shit was superb. And it’s about to get better in the 2nd hlaf of 2012….

      3. all trash nobody listens to this niggas thats way nobody on your list sold 100k yet its 2 billion people and the world and you cant sale 100k step your listen game up

      4. Ab-Soul > School Boy Q
You left Curren$y- The Stoned Immaculate off the list & Krit’s 4eva Na Day Mixtape off the list. I also fuk with Stalley’s- Savage Journey to the American Dream. Nas’s- Life is Good is Gonna be album of the year. I wanna hear that Brotha Ali & Jake One album plus that Freeway album as well. People sleep on Freeway he’s very consistant just looks uglier than Sam Cassel.

To Me So Far Apollo Brown & O.C.’s Trphies is album of the year so far.

      5. looks like “big brown” needs everybody else to agree with him to like music, I feel sorry for him

Nice List Dude But You Missed:
        Oh No – OhNoMite

    17. Too many haters over here! All you can do is fuck yourself broke ass cowards!!! You are broke forever!

      1. Your point? I don’t think there’s a correlation between being ‘broke’ and disliking an album by a group of average rappers.

    18. This shit is pure garbage. Weak ass ryhme’s and so so production’s. Officer Fat Ass Chesse Burger Ricky go back to the drawing borad with this trash.

    19. “When stuff like this has came out this year”

Teenagers don’t bump OC. What alternate universe are you driving around in?

    20. man Rick Ross is a genius… dis album is an instand classic, modern classic shit maaaan. dis masterpiece is going to sell 1 milli first week. yo real talk niggas. Meek, Wale, Omarion all lyrical monsters… Stalley wack… but da others are hip hop legends… YMCMB and MMG da best fucken labels ever. fuck 50 Cent! fuck Nas! fuck Eminem! fuck Jay-Z!! Its all bout Lil Wayne and Rozay…. aka da best sellin rappers. swag

      1. You shouldn’t even be allowed to listened to hip hop, you fuckin flaming homo. You don’t know shit, and listen to wackest rappers alive, you clown.

      2. hahahah he said Swag!! wow how old are you little boy..does your mom know your on websites talkin about grown up music?

    21. I thought this album was dope. The “Rick Ross is a cop” thing is so played, incase you lames still posting about it didn’t know, you couldn’t sound cornier by stating that. You don’t know shit about any of these rappers other than what you hear, Maino has the rep of a G but for all you know he got punked for his shit in jail and has a thing for men (strongly doubt that shit, but just trying to validate a point). These fans get so caught up in hype, just like the 50 vs. Ja shit, 50 was the hot topic in hip hop at the time and he said fuck Ja so everybody jumped on the bandwagon and said fuck Ja too. Ja would rap circles around 50’s elementary school lyrics but that’s getting off topic. Ross is far from my favorite artist so save the stan talk, just can’t believe people still leave the same comments judging dudes personal life rathwer than music. If Biggie we’re alive today and spit that bar about the chick lookin so good he would pleasure her pops then people would be dropping comments about how dudes gay and shit, when back in the day fans just understood the line, respected the music and kept it movin. My bad for draggin this shit on yall, just can’t stand when dudes leave comments about rappers like they were best friends in school or some shit. Out

      1. Yo Bruh Shut the F*ck up with this shit. U must not be from the East Coast fam. 50 Cent vs. Ja Rule beef is rooted within the streets of Queens u ass. Had a large presence in the jails of NY too. Read up on 50 Cent fam he aint take 9 shots for play play homie.

    22. The album was disappointing. It’s got a few songs I’ll bump, like the first track and the track with Nas. Good verses here and there from everyone, but it doesn’t come together right. Low energy and repetitive hooks.

    23. 4/5 This album is way better than you guys say it is… good mix of bangers and laidback smooth ish. The subject matter is a lot deeper than Vol 1 too (thanks Stalley, Wale and Nas). If Omarion had a few more hooks and French Montana wasn’t on any of the songs I’d give it a 5.

    24. Love Stalley & I think rick ross & Wale are okay but repetitive, but this album sucks. Omarion’s Prescense isn’t needed at all, he sing through his nose. The beats were awful too. Rick Ross’s tastes in beats is falling off he used to be superior at that

    25. Nice Beats. Omarion songs aint bad. Wale got some crazy bars. NEEDS MORE GUNPLAY. Ross getting painfully repettitive Stalley needs something. Wale really dumbed down for his audience to double his dollars. I aint mad tho. He still spittin.

    26. Rozay is my nigga, Meek is my nigga, Wale is a cornball but he’s nice tho, Stalley is str8….

but dawg, I cannot rank an album that has Omarion on the cover any higher than a 3 fam lol

    27. 5 stars i gotta give respect were its due this is the best mainstream album i have heard in a long time! but the best street album i have heard is that new lil wyte that album is hard! if you havent heard it check it out

    28. If you don’t like Black Magic you obviously aren’t listening to Meek’s rapping on that song.

    29. Well i’ve only listened to the KL and NaS tracks so i cant rate the album but..Ross is garbage his lyrics are really basica and fake and his flow is really just talking slowly , Wale is cool, Meek yells not raps but hes lyrically nice, and who are these other fools?

    30. lets see he takes the old g-unit mixtape cover, biggie persona the real rick ross life and beard mmg gets dropped from def jam thanks sha money he goes to another label drops them triple c niggas and go get a new roster hahah

    31. jay-z said here you take wale haha rick ross is a tool how you gonna have your top artist under another rappers management company?

    32. Sure, I can show some evidence. You retards like to throw around the term “publishing” but you have no idea what it means. Lets take a recent Rick Ross work, say “You The Boss” featuring Nicki Minaj. Rick Ross is a BMI artist so head on over to bmi.com and do a repertoire search for YOU THE BOSS. You will see that there are 3 writers and 7 publishers. One of those publishers is First And Gold Publishing. Could this be the publishing arm of Slip N Slide records? Let’s find out. SNS is based in Miami, FL, right? So maybe we check out sunbiz.org and run a quick Document Search for Corporations that might call themselves “FIRST-N-GOLD PUBLISHING, INC.” Who owns said publishing company, a Mr. Theodore “Ted” Lucas, owner of Slip-N-Slide records? Now what would they be doing owning a piece of a Rick Ross song that was just released in late 2011?

    36. 1 is the most popular ranking…that says everything about what’s wrong with hip hop, it’s always either gotta be 1 or 5, no middle ground. Commenters on this site are pathetic. I bet 90% of the people who gave it a bad score ain’t even listened to it and 90% of the people who gave it 5 would have done no matter the quality of the music. Aside from 4 or 5 tracks I actually think the album is dope, they have meshed together all of their styles to create one cohesive sound, that ain’t an easy thing to do. 4/5.

    37. Majority of the hating ass homosexuals on this site does complain they cant relate to ross’s musics cause he talks about money. If u broke, you will never be able to relate to it. 40. If Michael Jackson came alive right now, hed ask you to smoke one for him. So in his honor “undue importance to the album”? I wish I could punch this fucking reviewer in the face for that, what a horrible lyric.

    41. “itll be a force to be reckoned with for quite some time.” – thats even worse. It will be played for about three to six months and then people will move onto the next thing. damn with these comments you think the reviewer would have given this 4.5 stars. This has nothing to do with the music, but how fucking dumb the reviewer is.

    42. Self Made, VOL. 2 gon outsell Recovery… Self Made, Volume 2 will debut at #1 next week wit between 780-840k in sales. check http://www.hitsdailydouble.com... da album is #1 on itunes already. Rick Ross gon outsell crossover bands Linkin Park and Maroon 5. black power!!!!!!!!!! swag

    43. I’m going to give this album an honest listen. I’ll be honest, the whole money, drugs and women content is extremely played out. Nowadays people are much more concerned with a beat, and if they can dance or not to it. Its really a sad situation, I feel as if our music (Hip-Hop) has been watered down over the years. I currently wouldn’t consider myself a Rick Ross fan, but I also don’t dislike him. Rick Ross has always done a solid job when it comes to dropping albums (Trila, Port of Miami etc) I just have too many other artist to listen to before I chose to listen to him. I feel like people are so quick to defend their favorite artist(s) without being able to see any potential flaws. MMG’s flaw for me = their new use of trap beats. I feel like after Wake Flocka Flame started using Lex Luger beats, now the whole damn industry is. There isn’t anything wrong with it, they can use whatever sound they’d like, i’m just saying it bores me personally. But if you’re going to say MMG has no lyracist, then you clearly aren’t up-to-date on their artists. Wale, although has started to rap more about material things, is a beast on the mic. And Stalley’s newest mixtape is very underrated. I’ll give this an honest chance. but group wise in hip-hop ain’t no one fucking with JETS, or TDE.

    50. first self made was 100times better meek shoulda been on every track he the best in mmg by far guess he was workin on dreams and nightmares

    51. let me just say this right off the bat,new Alchemist album Russian Roulette blows this mmg bullshit out of the water.. with that being said i personally listen to music for the relativity to my own life and surroundings, if there are people who really live up to what Ross and all the other artists on mmg then so be it. go head and listen to it, i dont live that life of bangin a bunch of skanks, blowin money fast, riding in expensive cars and poppin tags. i wont hate on rick ross or mmg for talkin aobut that. but to say that this album is the best and he is the face of hip hop is just straight up wrong. i think this is another bragadocious album from mmg and just because they are rapping about the material things from a struggle point of view? the amount of “music” they have produced since the beginning of this “empire” does not leave room for their half ass attempts at keepin it real about their riches.

    52. and one more thing i have to add, when my younger sister is listening to a rick ross album when she is 14, and all her friends are playing it lol the marketing and publishing this man has done is incredible lol ive never see my younger sister with a Sean Price or a Phonte cd. just goes to show that just because the album is being sold to a mass amount of people does not mean the sales represent the quality.

    53. Like some of the comments say don’t download this album it’s over hyped. This is a waste of money if you can find it for free then maybe. But don’t buy this please don’t wasn’t your hard earn money that you work hard for. This is something that you roll your product on nothing else spend on that. People be honest with yourself and stop being used, this is some water down something you have already heard before.

    54. The Album throws more light on the kinda characters the MMG crew are,i like the delivery on this one, i am particularly happy about Meek Mill’s career,he matured a lot.

    55. 53,133 copies of their debut album Maybach Music Group Presents: Self Made Volume 1 that released on May 23rd, 2011.

    56. “i dont live that life of bangin a bunch of skanks, blowin money fast, riding in expensive cars and poppin tags”

Ross is currently handing out new lives. Give him a call.

      1. u got his number? i got my eye on the 2012 Mercedes-Benz S-Class, and i need new barber equipment. i want to be rich forever too!

    57. The first half of the album is like ** 1/2 stars. Good production, but alot of the songs seem short. Plus it doesn’t seem like they got the best efforts out of Nas and Stench Montana.

    58. Stalley and Wale and even Meek and Ross to a degree have some songs with a message. It’s not 100% money clothes and hoes. I think there’s something for everybody on the album.

    59. Don’t listen to the review. Don’t listen to anyone saying it’s great. I am not even a fan of Rick Ross whatsoever but Self Made Vol.1 was BY FAR 10 times better than this one. IT had waaaaayyy more bangers. There’s only like one banger on here which is Black Magic. One the first album they had, 600 Benz, Tupac Back, By Any Means, Ima Boss, and more. And Im mainly talkin about production, because all those beats were fuckin bangin. THis album, not so much.

    60. OH MY GOD. Gunplay is so fucking horrible. Do yall hear that voice?? Most annoying non-meshing rap voice I ever heard in my life. Sounds like an 80 year old crack head. Get him the fuck outta here. First album much betta.

    61. Shit is a disappointment…and the one thing that stood out off this mixtape…Stalley is buttox, str8 bottom of the barrell ass nigga…nigga does not even fit into the crew, let alone he is horrible…

    62. It’s simple!!!If you not a Ross or MMG fan this album is not for you. What do you think the purpose of a fan is? Artist make music to cater to their own fans. Self Made is for MMG fans only. Not you idiots who flip through a couple of songs and get on a message board to make a comment. That’s Lame!!!

    63. this album went hard as fuck…. and of course the only lame song on this bitch was the one wit nas bitch ass… yung nigga $hit

    64. – On a compilation album for a group one would expect to hear verses/hooks from members in the camp. But in this case we got 12 features from rappers outside the group. French Montana appeared on as many songs as Stalley and Omarion. Meek Mill on appeared on 4 of the 14 tracks on the deluxe version. I think the amount of guest features from rappers should have been way lower than it was.

      – The album has really like no replay value for me. There are songs on it that do but the songs that dont over weigh the amount that do. For a group which is said to be 1 in the game the album they just released doesnt justify that. This project didnt have any songs that had me hooked like the first one.

    65. MMG’s work ethic is unparalleled with other crews in hip hop, consistently showcasing all members and letting their talent and pure passion reach us through lyrics and delivery. This collaborative effort presents quality, chemistry and dedication.
Just imagine if we could say the same about G.O.O.D. Music or YMCMB! It’s easy to claim G.O.O.D has better rappers or that YMCMB has more heavyweights, but MMG’s movement is what’s offering undeniably dope music, regardless of your personal preferences (I’m not a “Actin up” kind of listener, but the song is addictive).

    66. Released just as summer 2012 became official, Maybach Music Group Presents Self Made, Vol. 2: The Untouchable Empire finds Rick Ross and his crew doing it big with a mixtape worth of thuggy club music, but there are some solid anchors here that go way deeper than expected. First and best of the deep bits is the Wale, Ross, and Nas team-up “This Thing of Ours,” a slower creeper from Don Cannon that bleeps along with economical production, all as the three Dons solemnly reflect on their wins and losses. New Maybach signee Omarion joins Wale for the prime break-up and quick rebound cut “M.I.A.,” which is built a slippery, stark, and challenging Tone the Beat Bully production that rewards with each return visit. When it comes to gutter music, Gunplay’s “Black and Black” with Ace Hood and Bun B is as loud, raucous, and reckless as mad gangsters require. That’s three unexpected triumphs with Ross as executive producer, and when it comes to his usual Rozay-big, crowd-pleasing club track, there’s plenty, including the wonderfully ridiculous, eight-minute opener “Power Circle,” which comes with both “The square root of kilo is me” and “If Michael Jackson came alive right now, he’d ask you to smoke for him. So in his honor. (sound of a joint being lit)”. Political correctness aside, brute humor from Ross (“My bank account is Jewish”) is in abundance, and with Maybach folks like Stalley (check his “Fluorescent Ink” for some organic and jazzy uplift) and Meek Mill (an asset on the hook-filled “Black Magic”) mixing with Wiz Khalifa, T.I., T-Pain, and other established names, Self Made 2 is an interesting mix of in-house and all-star, and another reason to take Ross the ring-leader seriously.

    67. Ross is basically Drake with more facial hair. Started on Teflon Don which was basically an R&B album masquerading as rap. Now the second half of Self Made 2. They need real fire starters. Not Wale lol Omarion lol Stalley lol Whose joining the camp next album, Pitbull?

    68. The first one was a lot better. The production on here was too popish and tired ass trap beats. Cardiak was the only producer bringing heat and Lee Major on Power Circle. Lyrically Ross, Meek and Wale always come through but Stalley was a bad pick up. Pill is a better lyricists and meshed better with the group.

      1. cosign on pill. this album wasn’t bad but the features were overdone. Nas and Lamar would have been enough.

      2. I agree. I usually can’t stand trap beats, but shit like PACMAN and FITTED CAP off the first selfmade rocked to me. I can’t think of a single song off this new one that I feel that way about. And Stalley, while I loved “Intelligent Trunk Muzik” he does not fit the MMG mold at all.

    69. MY FIRST TIME EVER BUYING SOMETHING FROM ROZAY..ONLY B/C MY NIGGA K.DOT WAZ ON IT..PLUS..EY3 WANT TO SEE IF MEEK MILL LIVED UP TO THE HYPE!(JAY ROCK IZ WAY BETTER)..AND MY NIGGA STALLEY FROM(OHIO)..WOULD LUV TO SEE HIM HOOKUP WITH BONE THUGZ!..

    70. On my promo today: 100ashes just dropped on datpiffhttp://www.datpiff.com/Mozefire-100Ashes-mixtape this morning check it out. im sure if you think its wack you’ll let me know…..but I highly doubt it

    71. IDk if I even want to check this album out. If the MMG fans dont like it, I doubt if I will even want to listen to it. Please Ross, stop holding Wale hostage and give him back to hip-hop.

    72. Mann.. this group come harder on they solo projects and Misc releases.. There last comp, good, this one, not as good.. well atleast for me.. more caught my attention on the last one.. im feelin a few off here, Does anyone else think omarion stealing drake swag on “M.I.A.” tho? Could just be me.. i styll bump this comp tho, maybe i needa re-listen, smoke a fatter blunt and observe. I fuck wit MMG tho.

    73. I have been waiting for this album and was not dissapointed. My Favorite cut “Power Circle”….Fantastic Production from Lee Major

    74. listen up people, if this album is so wack, why is in number one #1 peak position with billboard.com…Makes you think that the same internet haters go from site to site posting negative comments. For Real, I like the album and it is hot …..

    76. HHDX is such a band wagon limey.HHDX got no personal review.Any album the mainstream media says its good, they say the samething. Here is a clue idiots, make ur own review not based on what Rollingstone,XXL, NME or some major newspaper review.

    77. The album was okay, worse than the previous one but a few nice songs like ” I Be Puttin’ On” and “This Thing of Ours” but that’s about it. I just hope Rick Ross’ album is better than this

    78. people crazy dissing this album.

one of the best works of 2012,
it took me a few listens to truly appreciate but once you got it its bless.
this thing of ours, actin up, i be puttin on, the zenith, m.i.a, bag of money are all immense.

    79. and the reviewers crazy saying french montana does nothing for the album. his verse on actin up is the amazing and he is one of the best rappers at the minute.
“ratchet ass hoe dont play with me. want to Kobe me, want to humphrey me, want to Michael me, Russell me; take me to the bank and tiger me”

      woiii

    80. Im a huge Rick Ross fan but im burned out on this one. Its all bitches balling and bottles. Nice to hear every now and then but not a everyday listen. And for their clique to be so deep they shouldnt have features. let the niggas on the label shine. my ratchet rapper list is full so no new guys foreal. wale seems outta lane. meek mill is nice but can get overbearing. gunplay aint got a pic on the front but should be a main member. nice to see omarion back cuz dude is good. stalley gets over looked in my book. he gotta get my attention for more respect in my eyes. imma skip this one but god forgives i dont is fuckin grand. and i want to hear dreams and nightmares. mmg is a strong team but all together is too much.

    81. People that are hatin on this album obviously know nothing about Hip hop. This album’s production wise is great and I think everyone fits in it including “French Montana”!!!!. Stalley’s verses always telling a story/ message like always. This Album is far the best of this year. Y’all wanna listen to some trash, ‘Good kid maad city’ is a nice one from you
