Tyler, The Creator won his first Grammy Award at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards on Sunday night (January 26). The Odd Future mastermind accepted the award in the Best Rap Album category for his fifth studio album IGOR, which was released last May.
The former Billboard 200 chart-topper beat out Meek Mill’s Championships, 21 Savage’s i am > i was, YBN Cordae’s The Lost Boy and J. Cole’s Revenge of The Dreamers III.
Tyler was previously nominated in the Best Rap Album category for 2017’s Flower Boy and Album of the Year for his contributions to Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange.
As Tyler got up to give his acceptance speech, he brought along his mother who was shedding tears of joy for her “baby.”
“That’s my mom if y’all wondering, “he says. “Hello. I don’t know if I’m gonna be up here again so bare with me. Damn, I don’t got nothing prepared. One, to my mother, you did a great job raising this guy.”
Prior to the win, Tyler was asked by a Rolling Stone reporter about the controversy swirling around the Recording Academy. Ousted President/CEO Deborah Dugan filed a discrimination complaint last week and accused the awards show of being “ripe with corruption.”
“I’m half and half on it,” Tyler said. “On one side I’m very grateful that what I made can be acknowledged in a world like this. But also — it sucks that whenever we—and I mean guys that look up to me—do anything that’s genre-bending or anything—they put it in a rap or urban category.”

why is everyone copying the Slim Shady VMA performance from 2000 every year?
It wasn’t a rap album
His first couple of albums are horrible. I have refused to listen to anything since. Has he really improved this much?
Yes actually. I’ve followed him from the beginning til now and I’ve actually managed to get friends who hate his older stuff into his last 3 albums. I’m hype whenever I hear them playing his songs without me even requesting it
some people really hate the fact they were born black.
STFU, you bitter ass insecure bitch. Bet you secretly fantasize about Tyler, the Penetrator…You..F**king Angry Gay.
Why do you sound so angry and gay?
Sorry can’t be gay, because Im not a log cabin republican or a bleeding heart liberal. The guy was hating on Tyler the Creator for being gay when he’s gay himself and is angry about it so he’s bashing any and everybody for it to just to make himself feel better. Hypocrite and a Homo…..pot calling the kettle black for real. The man is talente and creative and deserved to win the award. None of the album up there came close (will admit cuz the list was pretty weak tho) but regardless he still earned it after 10 plus years of grinding independently on his on projects and producing for other while still stay relevant in this industry. That’s saying something. Love him or Hate Him, He left an Impact.
One of the greatest and most innovative rappers of this generation. He reinvents himself with each release. I never know what to expect from him. What a well deserved win. The grammys got it right this time. Kudos
