‘Pop, Lock & Drop It’ Rapper Huey Reportedly Shot & Killed In St. Louis Area

Rapper Huey, widely known for his 2006 hit “Pop, Lock & Drop It,” was reportedly shot and killed in St. Louis on Thursday night (June 25). According to Fox2 News, the incident occurred at his Kinloch home shortly before 11 p.m. local time.

Police say Huey (born Lawrence Franks) was transported to a local hospital with a gunshot wound and pronounced dead soon after his arrival. A 21-year-old male victim of the same shooting also showed up to the Ferguson Police Department with a gunshot wound, but he’s expected to survive.

Investigators report up to 10 people were present at the time of the shooting. Police have made no arrest at this time.

Huey’s death was confirmed by Que Records CEO William “Quayshaun” Carter who released a statement on Friday (June 26).

“It is with great sadness that we share that a member of the Que Records family has passed on,” the statement reads. “It was a pleasure to work with Huey for the release of his Redemption album in 2009 with EMI. It was a happy time for us. It was Que Records’ first big release. It meant the world to us and Huey meant the world to us. His death is a tragic loss. Huey and his partner Rhome McGee were doing a lot for their community, hosting events and growing their self-funded clothing line.”

The statement continued, “The violence has to stop. We can’t only be horrified when white cops kill Black men. We have to equally be concerned when Black men kill Black men. The day that we hold each other in the same value is the day that we finally gain the respect that we deserve as a people.

“We send our condolences to Huey’s daughter and to his family and friends. We ask that everyone keeps us in their prayers and not let his vision and dreams die with us. Let’s continue on the path of Black excellence.”

Huey was introduced to the Vice President of A&R at Jive Records Mickey “MeMpHiTz” Wright after “Pop, Lock & Drop It” became a local favorite. His debut album for the label, Notebook Paper, arrived mid-2007 and hit No. 26 on the Billboard 200 chart and No. 10 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.

Meanwhile, “Pop, Lock & Drop It” peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking the biggest single of his career.

His sophomore album Redemption arrived in 2010 and spawned the single “Smile & Wave,” which never quite saw the same success as his inaugural release. In 2013, he announced he’d signed with Waka Flocka Flame’s label Brick Squad Monopoly and was working on a third album. He eventually released the mixtape Project H in 2014 before focusing on other ventures.

Huey was 31 when he was killed and is survived by a 13-year-old daughter.

    1. BLACK LIVES MATTER!! Did he get killed by a racist white police or fellow black on black homicide LOL!?

    2. Lol y’all seriously comparing the actions of police officers to those of criminals. That’s how strong the hate is. Y’all act like the black community co-signed this death like it was cool with us. We’ve just seen enough of our ppl put in jail, killed, oppressed as I’m sure will happen to whoever murdered Huey. We just don’t see that happen to the police who break the same laws and are held to higher standards.

      1. Unfortunately there will always be racist cops. Police reform wont fix that. What you don’t see is the black community coming together and having a conversation about black on black violence on the same level as what we are seeing right now with police brutality. The amount of black people shooting and killing each other throughout the whole country is insane. What about black kids growing up without a dad? Any updates on that discussion? Blame that on whitey too? Where are the black celebrities talking about this topic? Rappers still talking about guns, violence, and drugs. Almost all black.

        1. well said. and a black guy responding to this comment disagreeing and still blaming white people for all of their problems in 3..2…1…

          1. WYPIPO BE RAY CISS N SHIEEEEEEET!!!!!!!! WE WUZ KANGZ!!! KANGZ I SAY!!! KAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANGGGGGGGGGGGZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

        2. So basically, you’re saying you feel that black ppl DESERVE to be killed by the police. Lol and y’all be the same ppl wanting so hard to participate in our culture that we had to build because our original culture was taken. What a joke. You’re like the lamest ppl ever

    3. In sure the community organizers will step up and slove this quickly. Other news 17 people shot in Chicago on Wednesday. Time to defund the police! That will slove all of our problems! Dont be sheep YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT.

    4. I’m a conservative who’s sick of the racial unrest, but the trolls seriously need to fuck off. I wasn’t a fan of his song but a guy died, show some respect. RIP.

    5. Rappers needs to cool down with the macho attitude, violent lyrics and gang affiliations. I have lost count of the number of rapper killed and shot over the past month. R.I.P Huey

    6. Huey’s death in St. Louis further proves Lil Boosie’s words on Vlad Tv remain true. RIP Huey

    7. RIP. Black lives matter regardless of the killer. A song is like poetry allowing someone to express their feelings or truth. If you don’t know the difference between a song or a video game then maybe it’s time to pick up a book. Singing about violence doesn’t make you a killer or mean that you should be killed. Just because they always report black on black crime don’t mean white people not killing each other. Their dead bodies just get dropped in black neighborhoods. The police gave themselves a bad name by being unlawful. If they held them to the same standards as the military this wouldn’t be happening. Trying to use black crimes won’t cover up racism. Keep hiding under white sheets or blue uniforms like cowards. We’re standing right in your face with no fear. Time been ticking on your ass. Time up.

    8. Was he killed by whitey? No? Then what the fuck you wasting our time with this bullshit! Ain’t nobody got time for this shit, fuck outta here you c0ck suckers stop wasting our time with this bullshit that is irrelevant #OnlyBlackLivesMatter

    9. The label’s statement on black on black crime cannot be more accurate. It is embarassing and contradictory that we ignore black people killing other black people whilst we are aggressive against white cops for committing the same crime. SMH
