Kanye West’s “Jesus Is King” Ties Eminem With 9th Consecutive No. 1 Billboard 200 Debut

Kanye West has earned his ninth consecutive No. 1 Billboard 200 album with Jesus Is King, tying Eminem’s streak for the longest in the chart’s history.

According to Nielsen Music, the polarizing project has debuted in the coveted spot with roughly 264,000 equivalent album units for the week ending October 31. While the majority of sales came from streaming, approximately 109,000 of those were pure album sales.

From 2005 to 2019, all of Ye’s albums have entered the chart at No. 1. Kanye’s only project not to land in the top spot was his debut effort, 2004’s The College Dropout, which debuted at No. 2.

Like Kanye, nine of Slim Shady’s 10 albums have also debuted at No. 1, beginning with 2000’s The Marshall Mathers LP and culminating with 2018’s Kamikaze. Both Em and Ye have broken the Beatles’ previous record of eight.

As reported by Billboard, Jesus Is King’s first-week SEA units totaled about 151,000, which equates to 196.9 million on-demand audio streams for the 11 tracks on the album, resulting in the fifth-largest streaming week for any album in 2019.

Only Post Malone’s Hollywood’s Bleeding (365.4 million), Ariana Grande’s Thank U, Next (307.1 million), Taylor Swift’s Lover (226.1 million) and the second week of Hollywod Bleeding (220.9 million) had more.

It also marks Kanye’s biggest streaming week ever. Jesus Is King reeled in 96.9 million on-demand audio streams, surpassing his previous biggest streaming week in 2018 when Ye hit 180.1 million.

Jesus Is King marks a new direction for the G.O.O.D. Music boss. As indicated by the title, the project is heavily inspired by gospel music and affirms Ye’s Christian faith.

    1. Next LP will be 40 seconds of Kanye’s farting and crowd will say its an art and will top billboard as well

      1. Are you really saying this album is better than the Marshall mathers lp? Is that your argument? Were your parents related before marriage?

        1. Better is a myth to help you feel better / that you did nothing with your cheddar / but destroy Mother Earth and never met her.

      2. that’s funny, becuz JIK still didn’t outsell one of EM’s worst rated albums Revival first week lmfao

    2. Kanye released a unique album. What artist today could release a song called D.O.T. Death of Trap and go against trap music and soundcloud rappers? You would have thought J. Cole or Kendrick, but they’re on the corporate titty getting their own milk. Sadly, money over legacy.

        1. Ummmm of course. Did you think I just came up with DOT? Anyways, exactly my point. Who would/could do what Jay did with DOA and apply that to the bs that exists in hiphop today? Call it Death of Trap and call out the choppy flow, watersprinkler hihats, depressed girlfriend lyrics, fake drums, recycled content, etc. We’re in a different climate today and people would rather make money than preserve the art or secure their legacy. Not even kendrick or cole are authentic enough.

        1. That’s not the point. Kanye’s discog is universally considered one of the best in Hip Hop history. That’s even by the people who haven’t like his stuff in 8 years or so. Eminem catalog is mediocre at best and even his stans will admit that.

    3. Article is about the billboard debut. The 2 embedded videos have nothing to do with the billboard debut. They are put there to manipulate opinion.

      1. Possibly, but they’re also made by the site and relate to Kanye in some way, so they may just be promoting other material on their site that people visiting this article might be interested in.

      1. Kids See Ghost was a Collab album by them as KIDS SEE GHOST the group. It wasn’t a Kanye West and Cudi album in the naming. That’s why it didn’t count against the streak. It’s like Jay Z and Beyounce as The Carters

        1. Watch the Throne does count in the streak as it was by Jay Z and Kanye West officially. Samething like Cruel Summer isn’t included all due to the name it was named on the made by portion. Reading is fundamental my guys and gals LMAO

    4. It’s his 9th solo project, so if College Dropout wasnt included they must have used his collaborations with Jay-Z and Cudi, but if they used both it would be 10, and if they only used one that’s inconsistent. And if they used WTT but not KSG because KSG didn’t hit #1, then it’s not ‘consecutive’. And if they include collaborations, I’m sure d12 went #1 both times. Just saying.

      1. WTT was by Jay Z and Kanye. Kids See Ghost was by the group called KIDS SEE GHOST. Read the credits and album covers guys LMAO

      2. The College Dropout didn’t go number one my dude. The College Dropout peaked at number 2 when it dropped. Go do your Googles.

        1. That’s why I said it wouldn’t have been included. My comment was awkwardly worded, but yeah that was apart of me analysis. Jesus is King is his 9th album, right? College Dropout was not a #1 album right? But this article claims he has 9 consecutive #1 albums. Therefore, they must be counting one of his collaboration albums to reach 9, right? Wouldn’t it stand to reason, then, that if they were including WTT, then they should also include KSG, but if either one of those didn’t hit #1, then it was not 9 consecutive #1 albums, only 8 consecutive solo albums, because it wouldn’t make sense to count WTT but not KSG if we’re claiming these are all ‘consecutive’ #1 albums. Not sure if I’m wording this comprehensively, but I never claimed CD went #1. Also, if they were including collaboration albums for Kanye to reach 9, I’m pretty sure Em’s collaborations with d12 and Royce went #1 at the time,l.

            1. a gay that has a wife and children , a legend and better rapper than West ! looks like ur the gay here

    5. Can someone explain this to me? It also marks Kanye’s biggest streaming week ever. Jesus Is King reeled in 96.9 million on-demand audio streams, surpassing his previous biggest streaming week in 2018 when Ye hit 180.1 million.

      1. Because religious people are absolute shnooks with zero point zero taste in music. Kanye could fart in the mic, scream JESUS IS GREAT over it, run that through autotune and have a certified christian hit record in his hands. Which is probably what he did on this album.

    6. Are you all just gonna ignore the fact that JIK still didn’t outsell EM’s worst rated album Revival’s first week sales? LMFAO. It must suck to be a fan of Ye.

    7. When all your recent albums flop, make a religious album so all the biblethumpers donate their savings to buy the album.

      1. Did you not read the post? This is his 9th consecutive number 1 album (Not including other projects like cruel summer and watch the throne). How is that a flop?

    8. All 264,000 should be ashamed, they’ll let this dude say and do anything without holding him accountable. This nigga got sweatpants, socks, probably coffee mugs and all that bullshit, and it’s ok??? I’m agnostic and still feel the blasphemy smh….

    9. If you are ever in my town, feel free to damage my property. I have no problem with it because graffiti writing is an element of hip hop. How fkn stupid can you get?

    10. “It also marks Kanye’s biggest streaming week ever. Jesus Is King reeled in 96.9 million on-demand audio streams, surpassing his previous biggest streaming week in 2018 when Ye hit 180.1 million.”

      96.9 < 180.1

    11. “It also marks Kanye’s biggest streaming week ever. Jesus Is King reeled in 96.9 million on-demand audio streams, surpassing his previous biggest streaming week in 2018 when Ye hit 180.1 million.” 96.9 million is less than 180.1 million, correct?
