Kanye West’s ‘Donda’ Scores 2nd Biggest Spotify Debut Of All-Time

Kanye West‘s Donda is already enjoying huge success despite the seemingly endless delays leading up to its surprise release on Sunday (August 29).

According to Chart Data, Kanye’s long-awaited tenth studio album racked up almost 100 million global streams on Spotify in its first 24 hours, which marks the second biggest album debut ever on the streaming platform.

The top spot belongs to Kanye’s current bitter rival Drake, whose Scorpion album was streamed 132 million times in one day upon its release in June 2018. Post Malone’s beerbongs & bentleys previously held the No. 2 spot with 79 million first-day streams.

There’s one song on Donda that is proving to be especially popular. Chart Data also reports the album’s second track, “Jail” featuring JAY-Z and Francis and the Lights, has debuted at No. 1 on the US Spotify Chart with 4.277 million streams, the biggest debut of any song in 2021 so far.

Premiered during Kanye’s first Donda listening session in July, “Jail” sent rap fans into a frenzy as it signalled a long-awaited reunion between Kanye West and JAY-Z — with a Watch The Throne sequel possibly on the way. “This might be the return of The Throne,” Hov teased in his verse.

It isn’t just on Spotify where Donda is enjoying immediate success. According to Chart Data, Kanye’s latest effort has also broken the record for topping the Apple Music chart in the most countries.

The album is currently No. 1 on Apple Music in 130 countries, including the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Brazil and Australia. Meanwhile, “Jail” currently occupies the top spot on Apple Music’s US singles chart.

In addition to JAY-Z and Francis and the Lights, the lengthy, 27-track Donda features guest appearances from The Weeknd, Lil Baby, Travis Scott, Kid Cudi, Pop Smoke, DaBaby, The LOX, Playboi Carti, Baby Keem and many more.

Shortly after Donda‘s unexpected arrival on August 29, though, Kanye claimed Universal had released the album without his approval and blocked the DaBaby collaboration “Jail Pt. 2.” As of press time, Donda remains available on streaming platforms, albeit in clean format.

    1. Music stats aren’t going to matter anymore in fact people shouldn’t even pay attention anymore to them. Knowing artist uses machines to their advantage we in an era where even numbers are lying. It’s like back in the day when they use to buy their own albums now there are streaming farms. We just care about good music. Great album tho

      1. Now that its Kanye doing numbers its “people should care about numbers now” nah they should care about them more than ever. Kanye doing these numbers while promoting the opposite of what the majority of ignorant rappers promotes like self hatred killing your own people and hatred of women. says a whole lot.. Kanye doing these numbers while being “canceled” for having a opinion that differed from what the democrats told us to think.. always remember Biden said if you dont vote for him are not black.. imagine the man responsible for the unfair laws that target black people saying that you arent black unless you forget about that and vote for him.. n the case of kanye he may be getting shorted album sales and streams reporting numbers because his message is not the message those in power want black men to present to young black people.. there hasnt been a double album this good since outkast.

        1. If you are indeed Tom Ross and you have a TV station, thank you for making this comment so I know to never watch it. LMAO stop babbling bro. Your sound as crazy as Kanye. Did you vote for him?

    2. Everybody will stream an awaited project as soon as they can. It’s different from physical copies where people are more careful about what they buy. Trash is trash even if it is the most streamed trash.

      1. Facts, if you’re paying for a streaming service it doesn’t cost any additional money to stream an album which was so highly anticipated. The number of streams around its release has zero to do with the quality of the music.

    3. So much tomfoolery and he can’t even be the first haha. This weak sauce gonna dry out on Sept 3 when the other soft man drops. #CLB

    4. People love forming cults around shitty people. Just look at the last three presidents we’ve had. Not one did a damn thing for the country, but followers swear by them like they’re messiahs.

    5. I just realised that 90% of people on here who comments are just haters pure…

This album should be considered the best ever, not just in a hip hop category

      1. Dude, you’re a FDA grade A unadulterated 100% dick riding jackass if you actually believe that. If you like the album, cool. This album is nowhere close to even being in the top 1000 of all time. Brush your teeth. Your breath smells like Kanye’s genitals.

        1. It’s epic. Conceptual. The guests verses are on point and on subject. The pop smoke interlude lacked a bit, maybe should have put his verse on Off The Grid. Other than that. Masterpiece

      1. Remember Immortal Techniques immortal words; “Cause if you go platinum, its got nothing to do with luck, it just means that a million are Stu…. As F….

      2. Nah it just shows that you aswell as everyone else listened to the album. Hence why it’s number one everywhere. Albums a 6/10 at best but you talking pure smack if u saying you didn’t check it out the day it dropped

    6. Kanye is a clown. And… his music talent has lost its way. This album is horrible!!! All this uproar around these events for nothing!
