Coi Leray is a part of a new generation of rappers who are blowing up on Tik Tok. Fans are using their songs for dance videos or comedy skits, and with that comes an increase in streams. Even with chart success, however, some artists struggle to shake off the label of being a “Tik Tok artist” — Coi Leray included.

On Thursday (October 7), the 24-year-old rapper hit up Twitter to address the critics calling her a Tik Tok star. She argues her music almost automatically hits the Billboard charts after blowing up on Tik Tok, so people need to address her as such.

“Tik tok artist goes straight to billboard every time so call me a billboard artist whenever you wanna throw tik tok in there,” Leray tweeted.

The 24-year-old rapper has charted on the Billboard Hot 100 twice with “No More Parties” and “Big Purr (Prrdd)” featuring Pooh Shiesty debuted at No. 26 and No. 69, respectively.

Critics and trolls drag Leray for everything from her look to the way she sounds on her songs. She’s not paying it any mind, though, especially when she’s performing at festivals and earning nominations at award shows. Coi Leray is also sticking up BIA, who received some slack for her 2021 BET Hip Hop Awards performance last Tuesday.

Coi Leray Addresses Critiques On Her Live Performances & Freestyles

BIA is another rapper whose songs are popular on Tik Tok, and someone decided to take aim at her and Coi Leray on Twitter for their unappealing sound and performances. BIA clapped back at the fan, calling him “weird and jealous of other peoples success.”

Coi Leray had more of an unfiltered response saying, “These bitches GOT NO HITS !!!! NOT 1 IDGAF DEAD CROWD LIT CROWD WE MAKE HITS WHILE THEY OUT HERE MAKING VIBES SMD ALL YALL HATERS.”
