Rapsody is a firm believer that timing eventually works out when it comes to collaborations. While speaking with HipHopDX, she shared her story about securing a guest feature from J. Cole.
The Jamla Records artist recalled reaching out to Cole for her 2013 project She Got Game and not hearing back. But five years later, the timing worked. He hopped on 2018’s Jamla Is The Squad II cut “Sojourner,” which also ended up on Rapsody’s EVE album.
“It was She Got Game that was the first time I reached out,” she told DX. “I was trying to get Kendrick [Lamar], Cole, Chance [The Rapper], [Big] K.R.I.T., every ill MC you could think of.”
The North Carolina-bred MC added, “I think the song I sent Cole was dope, but he was still waiting for me to grow or maybe he was too busy for whatever reason.”
As it turns out, Rapsody may have gotten one of the final features from the Dreamville Records founder. Last month, Cole announced he was done with features after collaborating on Gang Starr’s single “Family & Loyalty.”

“This is an honor to be on this song,” he wrote on Twitter. “NEW Gang Starr. This is the last feature you’ll hear from me. Thank you to everybody I got to work with during this run. @REALDJPREMIER This song a classic, thank you. RIP GURU.”
