It was only a matter of time when the music world responded artistically to the events that took place almost two weeks ago. A number of artists chose not to sit by idle during the devastation and many have also picked up a pen to voice their opinions about the hurricane.
Mos Def is one of the first out the gate with his song titled “Katrina Clap” which utilizes the beat of “Nolia Clap” ironically created by New Orleans’ Juvenile. The song has already made its way to the net with Mos voicing his anger and empathy about the events and lashing out at those not doing anything.
Texas hip-hop group, K-Otix, has also made a song about the issue by playing off of Kanye West’s now infamous burst with the song “George Bush Does Not Care About Black People.” The two emcees rhyme over Kanye’s “Gold Digger” and criticize the administrations slow response to those in need. Russell Simmons is reportedly working to put out an entire album based on the events with the proceeds going to benefit the survivors.
