Funkmaster Flex Calls Jay Z A “Commercial, Corporate Rapper” In New Rant

After threatening to take aim at the rapper a second time yesterday after his initial rant about Jay Z and Life + Times stealing his app idea was released on Thursday (January 15), Funk Flex returned to his radio show last night and blasted Jay for a text message he sent and his status as a “commercial, corporate rapper” in 2015.

“I did an interview for Life + Times whatever,” he started, recapping the original rift. “I talked about the app or whatever. Yes, I feel like I was jacked but it was okay. He OG. Anything for the OG. I understand his personality, what it is. We good. We move on. App and everything came out. All I did was support and support it real big because it was a big accomplishment. Great for the movement. Yes, I go to the 40/40 club and security’s always complaining when I play Dipset records. Is that petty? Yeah. Cornball move? Absolutely.”

Referencing his own rant on Thursday, Flex went on to call out Jay Z for the way he reached out personally to try and reconcile the issue.

“I said my piece Thursday, I kind of left it alone after that,” he said. “My phone is getting called private and I know ’cause whenever he does call me he calls me private. So it’s cool, I’m alright with that. Makes sense. Then he texts me and spells his name in capital letters. Now, some people said, ‘Hey, maybe it was the phone that automatically capitalized it or something.’ You should have lowercased bruh. You should have redid that and lowercased it. Even though I have this respect, I have such respect, I’m not gonna let somebody try to handle me. For the simple fact, in 2015 bruh, I don’t do the caps in the texts. I don’t work for you. I’m not a worker. I want you to understand what my opinion is of this in 2015. In 2015, you are a commercial, corporate rapper that drops a little catchphrase every three months. There’s nothing wrong with that, I think that’s super dope. Don’t talk to me funny in the text bro. I don’t work for you. I’ma tell you why I am the only deejay, radio personality that can talk like this. You know why? For the simple fact, we not scared of you. This radio station doesn’t need you or care. Actually, the whole company doesn’t need you. You can’t call the bosses like you do other things.

“I can have my opinion bruh because look, when you address a rapper, I’ma give you what you do: you wait for a hot song to come out, you jump on the remix, and then you throw a shot,” Flex added. “Which I respect by the way. If you ever plan on taking a shot like that at me or any sublim, I will be on this radio every day going at you. I just want you to understand, just ’cause I’m talking a little lower bro, that’s what it is.”

Switching lanes, Flex called out Jay Z for not congratulating Roc Nation artist J. Cole on the recent commercial success of his new album.

“By the way, on another tip, why don’t you sometime congratulate J. Cole on that 300,000 he shot out and stop acting like that album don’t exist?” he said.

Wrapping up, the Hot 97 deejay offered, “Moral of the story bro, this is my city. You ain’t above me bro: your talk game and your happy game and your dumb laugh. That laugh is disrespect and people he does it to you should take it as that too. That’s some clown like—he’s clowning you.”

    1. He calls Jay Z a commercial rapper but he himself is a commercial DJ. Unless your music sells your music won’t be played by Funk Flex.

    2. I got respect for Flex cause I am cut from the 90’s cloth…but he is a walking contradiction. He is humiliating himself. Sand in his vagina I guess?!

    3. I think it’s just a shame that this guy is complaining about a caps lock on text messaging…really? Sounds like how teenagers read into how people text each other.

And concerning the lack of congratulating J. Cole….does the guy really have to post to social media for it to be official? I can guarantee Jay Z has reached out to Cole personally & given him due credit.

    4. Gotta commend Flex for having the balls to speak his mind, freely, about Jay. Most djs would be too scared. Respect to the OG.

    5. He could have saved all this for that private call HOV was trying to have with him. Cus no listeners care or should care.

    6. Seems like a petty cornball move what flex is doing i mean if ur mad he took ur app airhim out but bc he uppercased lmao? Like some highschool whitegirl shit

      1. Flex you sound like a damn fool. Your feelings are hurt over capital letters? You are so immature and high school. How about calling him on the phone? You are a dumb ass,

    7. Flex call him out on that bitch ass laugh!! J should be insulted for that ,BEa must be piss at flex for calling JZ a bitch on air. That laugh is what flex say it is fake!!!!!

      1. you typed the same exact comment that any scrub would write. pick the side of whomever has “more” & stand next to them, calling “haters”. you the one who needs growing up

      1. you’re new outsider & wouldn’t know that’s his trademark so whatever you don’t understand is corny to you

      2. LOL yeah I knew it was his “trademark” but damn man how about you talk? So he walks around with that sound que-ed up so after every word it sounds? Fuck out of here with that bull shit.

      1. The Dynasty is Jay-Z’s worst album, and every album he put out since then and before then was dope. Go back to Hip-Hop school, nerd.

    8. I see Flex’s angle. .. but he comes off like a Baby. Talk to Jay about the issue. Not the public. He texted YOU. not NYC. Keep that shit in house.

      1. nah bro just ignore all of his calls that you know are him and then throw his texts up on the gram. that’s what jay z always responds to, right?

    9. I always love the cats that start acting like this when they get their feelings hurt. Jay’s been this same dude all this time, but now you finally want to speak up. It’s like when Dame Dash started going on his rants about the industry like he wasn’t knee deep in it for 15 years. Speak on it when it first comes up and rubs you the wrong way, not when somebody makes you feel a certain way to speak on it. That’s not being real.

      1. it could be some political stuff going on in the recorded music industry when it comes to dipset & jayz/rocafella…….and since flex is a part of the reunion he’s encountering roadblocks. funny how not ONE OF YOU can even see that being the issue

    10. So, he’s offended because Jay-Z used all caps in a text??? Thank God social media wasn’t out when I was a kid, I would have never liked rap. Social media has brought the bitch out of all these dudes. Damn Hip-Hop is gay now. As for Funk Flex…who the fuck do you think you are ‘bruh’? You’re not even a DJ any more, you’re just a radio personality with no personality. If Jay-Z called you to do an album with him, you’d drop the dildo and the cheeseburger and run over there with your robe and slippers on. Nobody has ever regarded Flex as a great DJ. He’s just a egomaniacal asshole with industry connections, so people act like they like him.

    11. Jay Z is a small dick guy who pays Foxy to lie for him and make people think he packing something (not) and then gets a Blue IVF kid with his friend. Biggest cover up. Black people are basically stupid. This is how these types get away with what they do. They are mostly all gay particularly Kanye and his fake plastic hoe.

    12. Flex isn’t very smart, someone does something he didn’t like (true or false) Regardless he burns a bridge with someone he has known for a long time. Does he really think Jay is going to get into a shouting match with him. No! I wouldn’t be surprized if Jay Black Balls Hot 97 from all of his artist. I would do that if I was him. Hell we have another hiphop station in NYC and its doing better then Hot97. That means burning a bridge with Jay, Beyonce, Kanye West, Rihanna, J Cole, Big Shawn, etc. Flex personally may not need him or care but I doubt the higher ups would want to burn that bridge for anyones ego.

    13. I’m lovin Flex right now and I usually despise him! Jay needs to be outed. He sees himself as being above everyone else. MJ is the best selling artist of ALL TIME and was so humble and thankful to God. Jay-Z thinks he is God.

    14. Flex is so sensitive. If Jay doesn’t go at him in a verse, that will speak volumes though. He has caught feelings for far less.

    15. Flex is bitchin. Hot 97 is a corporate gig. Flex don’t own shit in the rap world. He only gets attn. because he talkn shit on Jay. On his own- NOBODY outside of nyc gives a wet shit about him.

    16. dis cornball must’ve said “bro” more then Ronnie magro in heat… Plz get this fat white boy off the air… My favorite was when he goes, “I did interview with life and times, whatever… I talked about the app or whatever..” Go kill ur self broooooooooooo!!!

    17. Flex is a complete joke. HOV is the illest and lets not forget his catalogue of music he has made in his career. We live in the A.D.D era of music where we pump something hard and dump it the next day. Careers end quick. HOV has been the best and most consistent for years now.
Flex needs to chill out. He’s nothing but a DJ that pushes a button and plays music. HOV is supposed to respect that? You’re on his level?? HOV treats you beneath him because you are. Everyone in the rap game is.
It’s simple. Maybe HOV isn’t what he once was but still, show some respect. This guy is obviously trying hard to get HOV to respond. In which case HOV will say a witty one liner and he’s done. FLex is a joke.
Getting at Jay Z 1 minute and the next saying “oh, hes the greatest at that, i’ll give him that. But…” knock it off. You play music and got lucky. You’re not as talented as the rant makes you look. Naize it!!

    18. One more thing. This shit seems so petty. You’re obviously looking for attention here. You didn’t have to bring it to radio. No one knew about this situation at all. This is something that 2 grown ups should talk over and explain yourself to jay and say you feel disrespected. Maybe HOV disrespected you and he would agree if you brought it to his like that and said, “Bro, I’ve known you for a long time, that was sneaky and I feel disrespected.” DONE. Instead now you wanna go to radio and diss him and than say you better not diss me back or else i will get you worse.
Sounds like you’re a super hater and you are trying to pick a fight.
“YOU SHOULD KNOW IF YOU SAY YOU GON DO SOMETHING AND YOU GO TO RADIO WE ALL KNOW YOU FRONTIN.”

    19. I think they should just have a rap battle.. I think Jay would slightly edge it although Flex would give him a run for his money

    20. So what did Jay do exactly?!?! Made half a billion and tried buying Flex’s radio station? Is that it or am I missing something? Stole Flex’s app? Is he referring to the Samsung/Jay app (Samsung apparently doesn’t have app developers)? Whole situation is a little confusing…imagine how Jay feels…and this stuff seems to happen all the time.
