In the wake of an awards show unlike any other, leaving one man stabbed while hosting a large fight during an award ceremony, Vibe magazine’s president Kenard Gibbs has announced that this will not derail the Vibe awards from coming back.
“We’re doing the awards show next year,” Gibbs told Billboard. “If we don’t, it will be counter to all the things we have been able to do with the brand and the culture.”
In only it’s second annual show, a fight broke out when the lifetime achievement award was to be presented to Dr. Dre. A young man asked for his autograph and proceeded to punch him. During the melee the same man who assaulted Dre was stabbed and taken to the hospital. Young Buck of the G-Unit eventually arrested in connection with the stabbing and is presently out on bail. This nonetheless gave the awards show a tremendous black eye.
“There’s a common theme to all this,” Gibbs revealed in response to both the Vibe event as well as the recent brawl at the Detroit Pistons vs. Indiana Pacers game. “‘Young black males gone wild’. Taking street mentality to resolve conflict and bringing it into entertainment and sports has gone unchecked. All of us within the culture have to look at this and develop some means of accountability.”
