Big Sean has revealed that before he released his 2014 hit song “I Don’t Fuck With You,” he got conflicting advice from JAY-Z and Beyoncé when he played it for the power couple.
Earlier this week, Sean appeared on an episode of the St. Brown Brothers Podcast, hosted by Amon-Ra and Equanimeous St. Brown. He was asked if he knew while he was creating “IDFWU” if it was “going to be the one.”

“I just was having fun,” he answered. “I was in the studio with Mustard. I was just fucking around. I was really trying to make a song like this Too $hort song that I fucked with, in my own way… I heard the beat, and I just freestyled that shit.”
Once it was complete, he said, “I almost didn’t want to use it.”

He recalled playing the track for the Carters before its release.
Sean recalled the meeting: “Beyoncé was like, ‘That’s a little disrespectful. Maybe you should put Nicki Minaj on it, for a female’s voice.'”

Hov, on the other hand, got what the song was trying to do.
Sean continued: “And then JAY-Z was like, ‘Nah. People are going to get it — that it’s just you having fun.'”

After hearing the track, Sean said, “[JAY] sent me a text one time that was like, ‘Every day you’re not putting that song out, you’re losing.'”
So despite his worries that the song was “a little dumb,” Sean released the track, which is now nine times platinum.
