Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 7/29/2012

Nas missed his consecutive #1 week by less than 3,000 units. Country’s Zac Brown Band topped Nas’ Life Is Good, which still scanned over 45,000 second-week units.

Another ’90s veteran, 8Ball (of 8Ball & MJG), released his latest album, Life’s  Quest, following a tenure with T.I.’s Grand Hustle Records. ‘Ball’s most recent album was the lone new edition to the Top 200,

Life Is Really Good For Nas

With just under 200,000 overall units and a Top 3 LP, Queens, New York’s Nas did it again. The conceptual album, Life Is Good paired the lyricist with mentor Large Professor and late ’80s/early ’90s peers DJ Hot Day, D.I.T.C.’s Buckwild and the late Heavy D on the critically-acclaimed LP. Nas also worked with No I.D., Salaam Remi, Rick Ross and Noah “40” Shebib on the project. Backed off of the single “Daughters,” the highly-personal album is largely based off of Nas’ public and messy divorce with R&B singer Kelis.

8Ball Is On A Quest For Sucesss

Memphis Tennessee Hip Hip pioneer 8Ball nearly cracked the Top 100 of the Soundscan with his seventh solo album, Life’s Quest. The longtime rhyme partner to MJG’s latest work features Big K.R.I.T., 2 Chainz and the aforementioned band-mate. With radio success of “Good Girl, Bad Girl,” this eOne Entertainment release one of ‘Ball’s bigger solo albums since Almost Famous 11 years ago. ‘Ball & ‘G’s latest album, 2010’s Ten Toes Down, scored a Top 40 debut.

    1. That fool Flo Rida has only sold 60 000 this whole tym…dat biatch nigga fucked up music now even young little grls aint buyin his shit…lol Nicki only reached gold recently I thot YMCMB r platinum artist…

      1. i hate to tell you but flo rida has multi multi platinum singles for some crazy reason his fans cop every single on a mass scale they basically buy his album track for track ahah

      2. yea, that that amounts to more money than the sale of the albums. Don’t f wit his music, but that dude found he lane, and he is pretty much on cruise control

      3. Yea and also he is stupid jst lyk the young money groupies…and fuck Bawse!!! hoe is dat nigga a boss n he neva went platinum in his whole catalog…watch his stans com around n talk shit wit cum dripin from thr mouths…

      1. really i thought ross would of been pushing 200 plus i wouldnt buy his album but he got a big buzz if he doesnt even break a hundered thousand thats a really bad flop

    2. ross need to stop acting like he bigger than he is he talk that shit but his label dont move any units and he will never go platinum but some how he is a BAWSE!!! ahah

      1. i dunno on this one. i was walking around trenton, nj yesterday (don’t live there, just work there) and at least 4 cars passed me bumping his ish.

      1. we’re talking about nas, a legend and some fucking ringtone rappers who only sell singles, so yes, he flopped.

      2. of course did the internet crowned goat flop. lmao. stans be in here praising dude as the goat with 150k (!!!) first week while he’s being outsold by ringtone rappers that only have a short-termed career. a goat has to be strong on every field. but appearing in nicki’s video, on tyga’s and wayne’s albums and ross’ mixtape and featuring him on his own shitty r&b attempt didn’t help his sad ass.

    3. NAS FLOPPED IT IS NOT GOING TO SALE ANYWHERE NEAR WHAT NICKI SOLD. AND YES NAS HAD PROMO HE WAS ALL OVER ESPN HE JUST CANT MAKE A HIT LIKE YMCMB

FLO RIDA AINT FLOP BECAUSE HIS FANS DECIDE TO BUY EVERY DAMN SINGLE INDIVIDUALLY INSTEAD OF JUST BUYING THE ALBUM. ITS DUMB BUT THEY DO IT AND HE GETS PAID MORE BECAUSE OF IT

      1. Dumbass. Nas didn’t flop, but Flo-Rida sure as hell did. Nas had little promo. stop making excuses for your favorite artists and your least favorite artists.

      2. “stop making excuses for your favorite artists and your least favorite artists.” That’s exactly what all your comments revolve around, bruh. Just to remind you.

      3. Don’t talk too much shit about Flo-Rida, he might be the feautre you see next on Nas’ following, sure to flop sellout attempt, if his ass doesn’t rot in jail then, that is.

    4. Nicki Minaj could have sold 2 million albums domestically and 1 million abroad, is she wouldn’t have offended the Catholic Church.

    5. Wow all in all for real ppl??? As it looks to me nobody can sell shit anymore,
Nikki sold 598,000 is not good considering just about 5 years ago thats considerd a flop, shes fallen way off compared to how she sold before, and Rawse we’ll he’s never gone platinum I don’t think and by the looks of things he won’t anytime soon.

    6. haha, nas flopped y’all. where are all his dickriders at? probably crying that he didn’t crack 200k in his second. no gold plaque for nas.

      1. you wanna tell me that video was staged? nooooooo, this can’t be true. i was happy for nas stepping his hoe game up, but as it seems he’s truly gay on the dl.

    7. people are dumb, they have too much 50cent rational in sales…..1st week or even 2nd, 3d week dont mean an artist flopped unless they sold literally like 20K 1s week. different artist an albums sell differently, thers plently of albums that didnt do 500k and went platinum and gold…especially depending how much the album i promoted i.e videos singles put ou after it drops, for examle off the top of my head chamilliaire when his albm came out he sold 130k but when on at end of yea to sell 1.5mill, i remeber God Son album sold 150-160 1st week and went to saell 1.2ish by end of year….theres no dffeence in selling 600k in 1 week justto go platinum only by end of year….smh

      1. But God’s Son had a rushed release date because of bootlegging. It sold 156,000 in a three-day period, and sold 245,000 in its next full week. The industry reports at the time said that if God’s Son had a full week at retail in its first week, it would have done 320,000 the first week.

      2. but God’s Son came out almost 10 years ago and back then all this internet bootlegging/illegal downloading shit wasn’t half as bad as it is today

    8. 200k in 2 weeks is still very solid considering the climate of hip-hop today.Life is Good has a good shot at album of the year which will push more sales eventually, It’s like going to the movies what sells better a movie like The Avengers or The Departed? Ok which type of movie wins an Oscar and is remembered more

    9. WALE OUTSOLD NAS N DID 163K HIS FIRST WEEK N UR ASKING IF WE THINK ROSS WILL OUTSELL NAS? WHAT KIND OF FUCKING QUESTION IS THT? IF WALE DID OBVIOUSLY ROSS WILL

      1. word. nas’ albums should fly of the shelves off his name alone, but he has an army of bandwagon dickriders who jump on his dick whenever it’s the cool thing to do, but are the first to download.

    10. Rick Ross new album “God Forgives But I Don’t”, will sale between 400,000-500,000 in it’s first week. This will most likely be his first platinum offering.

      1. I doubt it will sell that much. Nicki Minaj didn’t sell that much……i doubt he will sell more than her.

    11. LAUGHTERHOUSE 600,000 FIRST WEEK OR BETTER

A YEAR PLUS OF HYPE IS ABOUT TO BLOW UP…

      … IN THEIR FACE!!

    12. Nicki Minaj has sold over 4 million singles for Roman Reloaded at $1.99 per single, so that’s at least 8 million bucks gross. Her album is still selling for $11.99 (minimum)at retail and probably $8.00 wholesale after shipping 1,000,000 copies domestically. In other words, Nicki Minaj has generated at least $16,000,000.00 domestically from just album and single sales.

This girl is on course to generate between $30,000,000-$50 million for everything (merchandising, tickets sales, licensing and etc) associated with this album. Universal, Cash Money and Young Money are getting paid indeed.

      1. i would rather be a legend and have classic records then millions of dollars from teenage girls and gays with no taste in music

      2. Yeah, and she’s like 4th in line ( or lower because of Management, IRS,etc) to get paid off her own stuff.

    13. While its still too early to call Nas’ album a flop, (it could go on to do gold or better, which in this day and age, is very good) it is not doing that well right now. There are no radio singles and Nas is not generating new fans, which he needs to do if you consider that most of his core fans are north of 32-35 and at that age, they are not running to the stores and buying Nas’ latest.

You can also consider it a flop if you think about how much Nas has/will make of the album sales so far. He probably gets about $1.50 per album, but with only 200k sold so far and it looks like next week’s sales will only be in the order of 25-30k, when the label is done deducting everything, so far, he actually owes money. He seriously needs to get his tour game up.

      1. Did YOU buy the album? Or are you just a sideline record executive? Here’s a hint, no radio single means LESS money spent on promotion. I purchased the album, it’s a good project. There is nothing that says people have to run and buy ANY album within the first two weeks. Congrats to Nas and ANYONE on the charts, it is NOT EASY to sell units.

      2. Nas has a 2 million dollar budget per album deal, which is why he didn’t spend needless money on promotions.

      3. that’s what that dumb fuck got for thinking he could gain new group of fans this far into his career by whoring himself through the whole pop industry. dude is facing a drop.

      4. Big Dan smh you makin us big niggas look soft like Sean… How the f*** you say Nas flopped.. I can name countless others who had way more promo then him and did… STFU you pussy ass nigga

      5. Big Dan smh you makin us big niggas look soft like Sean… How the f*** you say Nas flopped.. I can name countless others who had way more promo then him and did… STFU you p*ssy a$$ n*gga

      6. FAILED! I own every album of his til’ Hip Hop Is Dead, turned my back on him, because he turned into a fucking sellout and realized there are rappers of his talent without his fake ass manipulation. But sucking off this dude while you’re getting sonned left and right.

    14. “Congrats to Nas and ANYONE on the charts, it is NOT EASY to sell units”

Country artists have no problem selling. Singles are important, so why is Def Jam almost guaranteing that Life is Good won’t recoup their money?

    15. “i would rather be a legend and have classic records then millions of dollars from teenage girls and gays with no taste in music”

You’re a dipshit… Money is the only reason any artist gets into the business. If they told you they would never sell out they either can’t, or had the opportunity, and dropped the ball. Face it. Millions of girls love NM’s music, so as long as she can generate money, she’s a star. So go listen to Rakim while you jerk yourself off.

      1. Exactly. All these dudes get into the music BUSINESS. It just became the cool thing to market yourself as “real” and “anti-mainstream” to attract those underground groupies, because the artists failed to appeal the mainstream audience. that whole “alternate” shit is one marketing ploy.

      2. LOL! You guys are idiots!!

Did Bob Marley make music for the money? He was in the music “BUSINESS”

        Its called art..

      3. Nah, my favorite rappers are Talib Kweli and Black Thought. I just call BS when I see it. You’re just mad that Nas didn’t achieve the levels of success that his early career promised, you notorious liar.

    16. Nas went gold, thats whats up. Prolly go platinum in a couple weeks. Props to everyone on the charts, even though record sales dont really mean much, they either mean you have a dedicated fan base or you have the media promoting the shit out of your album. So basically trash can get on the charts so who fucking cares really.

      1. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOW! So they changed GOLD to 200k? It used to be 500k So what’s platinum, 300K (which is where he’ll be in a few weeks).

I need people to at least learn the rules if you gonna comment on stuff like this lol

    17. Doing this with or without a record deal. Nas on track 1 of his first LP

He’s not in it for the money. He’s an artist. Fuck yourself if you think otherwise

      1. He IS most def in for the money, he told you himself on “Hate Me Now” and you really believe his lies? Like the Premo album that should’ve come out? Or The Lost Tapes 2? BTW, nothing wrong with being in it for the money you can still be an artist.

      2. I’m sure you can tell the fellow dickriders the release dates and respective tracklists of The Lost Tapes and the Premier collabo, huh? Nas stay ethering yall wet dreams.

    18. Nas flopped? You guys are retards!

Either the albums good, or its not. Either you like it, or you don’t.

      That’s all that matters

    19. Keep in mind that Nas does NOT have a “360 deal” so total sales, not rank, matter with the label. This will probably be his last record on Def jam. I personally think that would be better for him. He can do these same numbers on his own which translates into more money for the legend.

      1. You can’t say ANYTHING to prove him wrong, because you don’t know shit about his deal either, so how can you tell claim that the shit he said was untrue?

      1. Blame the consumer. They don’t buy albums. Especially the “real Hip Hop heads”. A lot of those people (not everyone) claim they support real shit, but the record sales seem to prove otherwise. They’re the ones who need to step it up.

      2. Nas 194000
        Flo rida 60000
        Waka Flocka 73000
        MMG 190000(not 1st week)
Nikki Minaj 590000 (not 1st week)

^Case and point backpacker numbers that reflects the quality of the music, these should be at least gold with the amount of promo they got (nas is criminally undersold), but like I said earlier STEP IT UP! not us but the artists skills.

    20. what the fuck, nas blessed us with one of the greatest hiphop albums i’ve heard in years, every single track is hard as fuck, and his album is struggling to get to gold?

what the fuck is wrong with you people, you praise nas and are the first to critizise comercial rap all over the internet but it seems you never buy a single fucking album. Thats why motherfuckers like wayne and drake go pltinum, multi-plat in months while a legend like nas barely tops over 100k sales first week

shit, even Cole went gold first month, and sold 250k first week. GFID better not top nas…

      1. I phucks wit NAS sice day 1 Im talkin live at the BBQ and halftime when it was on the Zebrahead soundtrack. Heard the album loved the album. I REFUSE TO SPEND MONEY ON ANYTHING WITH OFFICER RICKYYYYYYYYYYYYYY! call me a hater i just cabt rock wit da fake!

      2. Sorry to say, but Nas don’t deserve “fans” like you that won’t support him based off the features he chooses, he’s a fucking artist.

    21. Every Nas album to date has gone platinum, this sure has a long way to go!

That said, I got a zune pass and definitely got this album, not sure how that translates to these numbers.

      1. According to the def jam website Hip Hop is Dead is platinum the only four out of say 15 projects he workded on did not go at least gold: the lost tapes (300k+), illmatic to stillmatic remixes, Distant Relatives, and the greatest hits. I am quite disappointed though with the number on Life is Good to date, this may be the one not to even go gold.

    22. NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON NAS THE DON

    23. A lyricist, a rap legend, a soul rapper put rick ross on an album… that just tells me his views and style have changed therefore I can’t buy it

      1. Nas been doing that since IWW. Damn, yall self-proclaimed stans need to put in more work. Yall be disappointing in your roles lately.

    24. Nas need to smarting up and do some more promotion. i say he drop that summer on smash and make that his next single, he need something on the radio or he might not go ‘GOLD”…i bought the album the first day it came out because im a Nas fan and i wanna see him do numbers. Nas is the people’s champ on the internet but yall wont go to the store and buy his shit. Yall some funny fools and get mad @ wayne for doin numbers…lol

    25. These sales are garbage. Are you telling me that someone who has a album weeks sale of 48,000 has the number 1 album in the country? Thats pathetic. And it’s probably Adele her album been aout for like two years, but it still seems to sale above 50k a week still. Speaking of Adele she is a shiny example of what can be accomplished if you just made great music. Itunes and the internet may play a part of why sales are so down, but that doesn’t mean people wont buy your album. You just need to make great music and then word of mouth will be your best kind of promotion.

    26. Ok all these people say Nas is the GOAT, so how in the world does the GOAT drop an album and it only sells 200k in two weeks? I mean at this rate it will never go 1 mil!!! I understand it is some whack artist, but this is supposed to be the best of all time right? I mean if the Beatles who are considered the best rock group ever, came out with some unreleased material before they broke up, you don’t think everyone old white person would gobble it up? But the guy who some say is the GOAT can’t sell 2-3 mil???

      1. Exactly. People can say what they want, but a the GOAT should be an icon, like all the other GOAT’s are. There’s no excuse for these wack ass numbers and don’t come with that “he ain’t had a hitsingle” cause this is the same guy that will proudly place obvious, genre-disgracing sellout attempts on concept albums after he put out polished, commercialized garbage before. If he can’t prove it in the real world, Nas is just another highly overrated internet figure, a place where his dickriders go out in full force to make up for the lack of recognition in real life. No Grammy’s, but he’s the GOAT, right? LOL. While Kanye and Jay don’t even know how many they won while theyy consistently impress the nerds.

      2. Yawn. All I see is hating ass bullshit with no facts. Come up with something original next time. You’re just another pop fan with no credibility.

FYI, a lot of great rappers never won Grammys; Pac, Biggie, Big L, etc., so your point is shot.

    27. LMMFAO

WHILE PEOPLE R INSPIRING 2 B GOLD MEDALIST

      Y’ALL INSPIRE 2 B INTERNET TROLL FCUKBOIS

NAS FLOPPED ROSS FLOPPED JEEZY FLOPPED WHOEVER FLOPPED

      & MOST OF Y’ALL AIN’T HAD UR 1ST JOB

    28. FCUKBOIS WIT NOSEBLEED TICKETS

WANNA TELL BOARD MEMBERS HOW TO RUN BUSINESS

AIN’T EVEN SOLD A COMIC BOOK OR A STICK OF GUM

BUT U KNO ABOUT RECORD SALES

      ROFLMAO

    29. life is good has been out for two weeks and people on here are acting like it will stop selling in a week or something. nas albums always take time to go gold. all he needs to do is put out summer on smash. and then the amy winehouse song – gold. and then he will tour and make the “real” money.

    30. “nas blessed us with one of the greatest hiphop albums i’ve heard in years, every single track is hard”

Stop lying. It’s bad for your health.

    31. understand this, in this market 200K albums in 2 weeks is damn good sales. You can’t compare 2012 sales to any previous era. There was no previous point in time when people pirated music as much as now. Furthermore,if we measure greatness in sales we will all be fooled into thinking money is sucess. Sales should be taken as a serious indicator of sucess among several other indicators. Simple minded, a-b-c- learning fools.
