Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 6/2/2013

This week, there were two new additions to the charts. For the second year straight, Los Angeles, California emcee Kid Ink tackled the Top 200 digitally, without marketing or promotion. Now backed by RCA Records, the longtime indie artist struck again with his Almost Home EP, scoring a Top 30 debut.

For the second time in a row, Radio Killa/Def Jam Records singing/songwriting sensation The-Dream missed the Top 10. His fifth studio album, IV Play, debuted at #16. The album features husband-and-wife duo Jay-Z and Beyonce, although on separate songs.

LL Cool J and Snoop Lion both left the Top 200, with Authentic and Reincarnated, respectively. Eve’s Lip Lock hangs on at #192 for a third week, despite strong criticism of her fourth solo album.

The-Dream Gives The Charts A Little IV Play

The-Dream has had a complicated history with the charts. His 2009 sophomore album, Love Vs. Money earned a #2 for the longtime Def Jam artist. His acclaimed debut, 2007’s Love Hate, was a #30 debut, though reaching gold in subsequent weeks. Following last year’s #29 debut of Terius Nash: 1977, The-Dream swung upwards on the rankings with this year’s IV Play.

His fifth album entered at #16, selling over 20,000 first-week copies. Premiered for free stream on VEVO before release, the album features G.O.O.D. Music roleplayers Big Sean and Pusha T, as well as Jay-Z, Beyonce and 2 Chainz.

Kid Ink Is A Quiet Sales Force

2012 DXnext artist Kid Ink continues to out-sell many of his peers. The Alumni Music Group artist who recently signed with RCA Records, continues to find commercial success in everything he releases. Following 2012’s Top 20 debut of self-released Up & Away, the L.A. artist hit Top 30 with his digital EP, Almost Home.

The star-packed six-song EP features French Montana, A$AP Ferg, Meek Mill and Wale. The project sold over 15,000 first-week units as Ink gears up for his major label full-length debut.

    1. It’s time for the Dream to stick to writing, he make way more money off that and French, WOW! I didn’t expect for him to flop this hard.chexkout thegrandreport, they got some good stuff on there too

      1. everybody focuses on hip hop sales …but people don’t see that RnB ain’t selling liek that either…..rnb sales on a a major decline in my book….unless your are a pop star of high magnitude like Justin Timberlake

    2. lmao!!!! the dream flopped real bad, but his album was super duper dope.congrats to my nigga macklemore for getting that indie money. k.lamar official has platinum plaque. wiz, game, french, tip, weezy and tyga flopped real bad

    3. the industry buy these artists cds to make it look like they succeeding when really they not they just buying back what they put out

      1. It doesnt have to be a lucrative/profitable move, It just helps to make It look like the artist isnt flopping.

      2. idiot, do these companies buy concerts tickets ?
idiot. the best sellers all perform on th biggest stages, not the others.

        you’re a certified idiot

    4. Daft Punk spending a second week at #1. Their sales were well deserved since that Random Access Memories album was dope.

      1. My favorite album of there’s is Discovery does anyone knowif its as good as that one? cause I’m thinking of picking it up.

      2. if you don’t know the name of the album you’re just a hype follower basing their best album on their most commercial song, you mainstream bullshit follower

    5. Hahahaha Macklemore and Ryan Lewis selling more than French his second week with an album that been out since October

    6. im telling yall. broken record. but what, is this week 9 for me to tell yall. weezy outsold kendrick. what a disappointment for lamar. he was suppose to be the next lil wayne and flopped harder then weezy did when he was 15. weezy was platinum at 15. kendrick at 29 isnt even close. even french montana who yall said flop… sold more then kendrick. so who really flopped? ya bish!

      1. when you have a point you have a point. wayne did technically outsell kendrick this week. and as much as it hurts to say, so did french

      2. immma have to ride with fresh on this one. wayne new album is album of the year. hands down

      3. French Montana’s downsyndrome ass sold more than Lil Wayne though!!! and Kendrick isn’t 29

      4. just gonna keep ignoring the numbers on the right which shows kendrick sold more than all these niccas

      5. Fresh 2 Def… like the above said, what matters is the total album sales. Kendrick came out a few months ago, and weezy… a few weeks ago.

Do you know what Kendrick was doing at 15?!? i dont, but it was probably what most 15 year olds are doing which is going to school. Weezy was blessed to be able to release albums on a major label at 15. You cant compare the opportunities that people had at a specific age. That is like saying Bow Wow is better than Kanye, Nas, Eminem, and Jay Z because he released an album at age 13.

      6. I know one thing for sure. At 15 Kendrick wasnt kissing 40 year old men on the lips and calling them Daddy.

      7. fresh 2 def stop leaving comments under your comment with different names to make it seem like people agree with you cause that was a stupid comment you made at first you must be 12. theres no way wayne sold that much don’t believe the hype on that wack ass cd. and Kendrick been out for way longer and the only one I see up there close to platinum

    7. If Gucci Mane sold 2500 last week and 2500 this week how is he still at 2500 total? Check your facts!

Or maybe the 2500 people that bought it last week all returned it and got their money back????

    8. wow french really did well second week. i m suspecting his album would crawl to god since nigga i aint talking about none is getting a lot of buzz

      1. its not but you cant say one flopped and not the other

guarantee they spent WAY more on french montanas album and marketing it than slaughterhouse

    9. to the idiot who said that companies buy albums:

idiot, do these companies buy concerts tickets ?
The best sellers all perform on the biggest stages, not the others.

      Idiot.

      1. french admitted to buying 100 copies for himself and having bad boy buy another 1000 copies. so you cant take that number and probably multiply it by 5-10

    10. wait wait I thought LAUGHTERHOUSE would tear it up because they had FOUR fanbases coming together like “Voltroon” or what-the-fuck

Hard to believe fat whining fuck Joell Ortiz is still a “free agent”

Doesn’t anybody want to make some money?!?!

      Come on make some noise!!!!

    11. I told you all that my boss, Birdman, guaranteed there would be consequences for Dream’s duet with Pusha T. Here is the proof. Pusha T will flop just as badly.

    12. As an accountant at YMCMB, I can confirm that I met with timberlake and he told me he bough 750,000 albums. So in reality, 2 20 is going wood.

      1. even if he did buy 750 that album is nearly 2x plat you moron so it would still be plat, not wood as you say

      2. Fake, in addition to timberlake buying 750k which is cheating, sales error caused an additional million copies that were meant to go to wayne’s album. Timberlake would be going wood if not for those unfair advantages. That’s why he’s called timberlake. Because that shit technically would be going timber which is wood.

    13. “guarantee they spent WAY more on french montanas album and marketing it than slaughterhouse”

Take into consideration Slaughterhouse has 4 members, which means they flopped and still had to split whatever peanuts they made. Montana has a platinum single, and is probably doing enough shows to be ok.

    14. “French Montana’s downsyndrome ass sold more than Lil Wayne though!!!”

      465,000 > 74,000

    15. Its funny how all these slaughterhouse haters are still saying they flopped but yet this trash ass nigga french had the biggest flop of the year so far.

      1. French an Laughterhouse are fucking horrible for some of the same reasons (horrible production, cornball lyrics) and some different ones (Laughterhouse have A LOT more lyrics) but think about this…

        Laughterhouse split x 4

        French x 1

leaving aside all the music biz contractual bullshit which means BOTH these flops lost $$$ for the label. (All that tour support comes out their pocket too, which is why you didn’t see Laughterhouse on the road in the U.S. after the album came out.)

Verdict: they BOTH suck, the BOTH flopped hard.

      2. For four niggas who were underground, didn’t have no type of hype, no cosigns, no play on the radio and not even a gold single… selling 52,000 first week to selling 146,000 they did good numbers. As for french nigga had all the hype, cosigns, major play on the radio, album filled with features nigga even had a platinum single, he’s barley gonna sell more than 100,000 units nigga flopped hard.

      3. Pucho, sure those #s would be great… for Duck Down!!!

Laughterhouse had lots of promotion, it was just all ineffectual– not necessarily Interscope’s fault because look what the had to sell.

French Montana has co-signs up his no-talent ass but ultimately he’s very boring, even someone like Fabolous (obvious a much better rapper, no matter how lame all his albums are) is charismatic by comparison.

Only reason A$$WIPE Rocky sold is white people think he’s cute.

      4. You have not a shred of evidence that the labels lost money so stop it, you haven’t seen a spreadsheet or an invoice.

      1. The sharp decline in YMCMB is undeniable. It’s on Drake to pull off a big album to stop the bleeding.

    16. the more i read comments on here the more i realize that the it’s a bunch soft lame dudes hiding behind keyboards.

    17. WAYNE IS NEARLY GOING GOLD BY NEXT WEEK HE WILL BE PLATINUM!!! TYGA IS ALREADY GOLD AND FRENCH WILL FOLLOW IN ROSS STEPS AND HAVE HIS FIRST GOLD ALBUM IN 1MONTH. KENDRICK SALES ARE GOING DOWN HE FLOPPED!! WEEZY OUTSELLING HIM EACH WEEK AND YMCMB WILL BE PLATINUM BEFORE MAKELMORE AND KENDRICK THESE WACK POP ARTISTS CANT MOVE NO UNITS AND WILL NEVER SEE A PLATINUM PLAQ!!!!

    18. these numbers prove to me that hip hop is just a fad now. everybody jumps on the “hot”/”next big thing” wave/ but when it comes to supporting the artists projects?? lol. men lie women lie numbers dont.

      1. It’s the new audience Kerry. When the audience was authentic, things went very well. Even this website was cool until they changed the format to please this new audience. Look at now.

You don’t have to be a rap music fan to comment on a rap music website. Don’t forget that, or the talk about sales and flop from the download/torrent audience. You just can’t believe them.

    19. First off, Montana’s not flopping. It’s only his debut album. Second, even if Lamar goes plantimum, it will not reach Tha Carter 3 or 4. Three, Wayne may only go gold with IANAHB2 but that’s because it’s a side project. Four, Yeezus will do worse than IANAHB2 due to lack of promotion. 5. Fathers and sons kissing is family time.

      1. yeah its his debut.. and FLOPPED imagine what his second album will do (o) bec he aint gonna get that chance

      2. French did flop. Nas’s debut actually did more than this and didn’t have half the industry and hype French did.

      3. it’s Macklemore’s debut, he did good, without a label…French did flop, you’re just in denial, and technically, GKMC is considered K. Dot’s debut, (because it’s under a major record label, unlike Section 80)…he did good too…so that “flopped cause it’s his debut” excuse doesn’t work

      4. Eminem bombed with his first album, infinite and look where he is today. Even if you call this a bomb, it’s only the beginning of his rise.

      5. Infinite was released on a small independent label and didn’t get a lot of promotion and hype. French is never going to rise. He’ll keep flopping and will be the modern day Yung Joc.

      6. Jay Z bombed with his first album as well along with nas. Look where they are at today. They are wack artists that somehow everyone loves. Montana will follow the same way. Maybe have low sales for his first album and then keep going platinum.

      7. Im just telling you the truth. Jay Z and Nas did bomb with their first albums and that’s back when albums were still selling. So 50k today is more impressive today. Besides, as long as Montana keeps music, he’s doing fine. BTW, you act like you love every single piece of jay z or nas’s work. There has to be music from nas or jay z where you hated it.

      8. Everything you say is lies, dentaldambitch. Nas and Jay Z were on small independent labels when they dropped their debuts and theuir shit were game changers. They’re great artists who impacted and influenced an enitre generation of rappers; they’re your favorite rapper’s favorite rappers. French selling 50K is terrible when he got a lot of hype, promotion, and a gangload of features and you got Kendrick selling 241K, Drake doing 450K, 2Chainz doing 147K, etc. Montana is never going platinum and will not gonna be around for long time, not matter what your stanning ass say. His career won’t be like Jay and Nas, but it’ll be like Yung Joc.

      9. Jay Z had priority records to distribute his first album who was a big company at the time. Nas was on columbia records, also a big company. Montana’s album will be a game changer over time. No one was talking about Illmatic or Reasonable doubt as game changers until much later. K dot also said he was influenced by Lil Wayne. Although Montana’s album did get guests and hype, albums just aren’t selling anymore, which makes the 50k copies sold normal, if not impressive. K dot had released music for about 8 years including one album and many mixtapes before GKMC. Drake sold a lot because of an ep from ymcmb, the company I work for, and plenty of mixtapes. He also sold back when albums were still selling. 2Chainz also had been releasing music for over a decade now. Montana is going platimum, even if it takes 5 years and will always be around for as long as he lives. Yung Joc is still a very successful artist, getting no. 1 hits. BTW, fathers and son kissing is normal.

      10. stop. album was not a game changer and he wouldnt even go gold if he got murdered tomorrow like pac

      11. Again with the lies. Jay and Nas were on small indie labels when their first albums were released. Montana is signed to three big labels: Interscope, Bad Boy, and MMG. Excuse My French is not a game changer like Illmatic and Reasonabe Doubt because it brings NOTHING new to the table, just the same commercial/trap bullshit that’s out now. French is never going platinum ever; his career continue to plummet and his only hit song will be Pop That, which had Ross, Wayne and Drake on it. I don’t care how low albums are selling right now, 50K is a disappointment when other artists are doing bigger numbers. French has also been releasing music for a long time just like Kendrick, Drake, and 2Chainz, so you’re just making excuses. You’re wrong about everything, especially Yung Joc, who’s now irrelevant with no #1 hits. Father/son kissing is not normal, why do you keep spreading that lie?

      12. Mac Miller 145k
        Slaughterhouse 52k
        Chief Keef 50k
        Tyler the Creator 89k
        Machine Gun Kelly 57k
        Tyga 54k
        Kid Cudi 136k
        Kendrick Lamar 242K
        J Cole 218k
        Nas 149k
        Lupe Fiasco 89k
        Game 86k
        Macklemore & Ryan Lewis 78k
        B.O.B. 74k

      13. Mac Miller: Pop
        Slaughterhouse: Pop
        Chief Keef: pop
        Tyler: Pop
MGK: Sold about the same as Montana actually.
Tyga: Sold about the same as Montana
        Cudi: Pop
        K Dot: Pop
        j cole: pop
        Nas: pop
Game: Came out during the holiday season
        Lupe: Pop
        Macklemore: Pop
        B.O.B: Pop

Most of these niggas are wack ass pop, which sell more than hiphop right now. And 50-60k copies is not bad in today’s environment. Montana will come out fine. I don’t care what label he’s signed too. These critics said the same thing about Jay Z and Nas (who by the way, had their albums released on major labels like Priority and Columbia unless your definition of small independent label is every fucking label out there (dumbass)) yet later, they became game changers (for the worse by the way). French will be a gamechanger for the better. Montana did release mixtapes but were not as promoted as those other niggas. Montana can only grow from here. Yung Joc is relevant today. Once he release new music, they will be huge hits. I have seen fathers and sons kiss all the time. Get a fucking life dumbass.

      14. Everything you say is a bunch of bullshit and a bunch of lies. Tyga is the only pop artist I mentioned. Some of them are great rap artists who make better music than French. Stop making excuses. 50K now is terrible. Montana is done. Critics did not say the same thing they said to French about Jay and Nas, who were on small indie labels. They were always game changers fro the best. French is not a game changer; he brings nothing new to the table besides commercial/trap bullshit and is making hip-hop worse. Montana’s mixtapes were major hyped-up. Montana is not gonna grow; he’ll get worse and go into obscurity in a few years. Yung Joc is NOT relevant today; when was the last time you heard from him? Never. He hasn’t made a hit in years and if he releases new music, he’ll flop worse than French. You’ve never seen fathers and sons kiss; just gay men. YOU get a life and stop trolling the internet.

      15. So columbia records and priority records you consider to be small indie labels? Montana is right up there with Wayne and Ross and Birdman and 2 chainz as some of the greatest rappers. Montana will make more music and his old music will be praised. He’s reviving hiphop dragged down by nas and jay z in the east. Montana’s mixtapes were underpromoted, Yung Joc will come back and fathers and sons kiss all the fucking time. I’ve seen them. I’ve even seen daughters and mothers kiss on the lips. IVE SEEN THEM IVE SEEN THEM I FUCKING SAW!!

      16. And 50k copies is respectable at least. If he sold 25,000, it may be a flop but it’s holding on well.

      17. They were not signed to those labels. All of those niggas you named (Montana, Wayne, Ross, Birman, 2Chainz) are some of the worst rappers ever. Montana will never be bigger and his old music will be forgotten in time. Montana destroyed hip-hop that Nas and Jay-Z kept alive. His mixtapes were overpromoted. Yung Joc will never come back. Fathers and sons do not kiss on the lips EVER and neither do mothers and daughters. THAT’S GAY AND INCEST BEHAVOIR. You didn’t see shit.

Also, 50K is respectable for an indie artist, but it’s terrible for a major label artist like French. If he had done at least 100k 1st wek, that’d been respectable. This shit is a major flop.

      18. Jay Z was signed to roc a fella but had distribution from priority. Nas was signed to columbia records period. No ifs ands or buts. You act like you can go to the future when you can’t. Montanas reviving hiphop and if you don’t like it, listen to your pop crap from Gay Z and Nas. I haven’t heard shit about Montana’s mixtapes until i looked them up. Joc will come back and fathers and sons kiss all the time on the lips. Ive seen this happen all the time. BTW, maybach, bad boy, and Interscope are independent labels by your logic.

      19. Obviously dentaldamboy in disguise because the real Chris would never say that. Everything said here is one big fat lie.

    20. is the young buck of this group- the cleanup man bec his whole team is floppin harder than flipper on the beach and everyone knows that team is just wack now..drakes the only thing holdin it up..until it eventually sinks like gunit

      1. @Anonymous it is that corny album that all he raps about is christian lubauton’s and fancy cars with more features then a dj khalid album

    21. YMCMB are lucky they signed Drake because many of their artists are flopping one-by-one. Drake better leave those niggas and go independent if he wants to be better because the YMCMB ship is sinking.

    22. Lol if you asked anyone on this forum if Macklemore would almost double Little Wayne’s sales you would have been laughed at to the point you never returned to this site

    23. I wish the comments section required accounts. I get my name stolen over a simple arguement. Meanwhile, trolls like dentaldambitch and YESSIR take up the majority of the arguement.

    24. For all who think French didn’t flop, check out the the sales of these niggas’ recent album:

      Mac Miller 145k
      Slaughterhouse 52k
      Chief Keef 50k
      Tyler the Creator 89k
      Machine Gun Kelly 57k
      Tyga 54k
      Kid Cudi 136k
      Kendrick Lamar 242K
      J Cole 218k
      Nas 149k
      Lupe Fiasco 89k
      Game 86k
      Macklemore & Ryan Lewis 78k
      B.O.B. 74k

      1. Most of those niggas were pop. Chief Keef and Tyga sold about the same and Game came out during the holiday season. Pop sells more in today’s environment.

      2. They are true hiphop. You just mad because they rap far better than you and make far more mmoney and bitches than you.

      3. Now you sound like a butt-hurt stan. They are not true hip-hop; they’re pop. I ain’t mad at anyone. I don’t care about another man’s bank account and the bitches they have are ugly prostitutes and anorexic models. Those niggas can’t rap for shit, either; I don’t need to be a rapper to know that.

      4. Of course, cause you won’t stop teasing my preferences. These niggas rap and have beautiful bitches. The ones you get are either nasty or gay.

      5. More shit a stan would say. These niggas can’t rap for shit and have ugly bitches. I have a beautiful girl. The girls you get are the nasty/gay ones. Oh, wait. You don’t get girls.

      6. I actually have a beautiful girl named Jenny. I’ve seen the ymcmb videos on youtube and the bitches are hot. fathers and sons kiss all the time.

      7. You don’t have a girl, just a blow-up doll. I’ve seen those YMCMB videos and those bitches looked like retarded donkeys.

      1. ^ they still do though

the slaughters just did a tour around Australia at the end of last year and their album was high up the charts because of that

    25. “You mean a gold single”

Gold… Platinum… That one Montana song outsold Slaughterhouse’s entire album of flop non bangers lol

      1. Another fake, FUCK ROC NATION AND SHADY!! YMCMB FOR LIFE BITCHES!! fathers and sons kiss all the time btw.

      2. FAKE!! Roc Nation/Shady for life. Fuck YMCMB. Fathers and sons kissing is incest and gay.

      3. I topped off my hot fudge sunday last night with Birdman’s jizz instead of whip cream. Wayne pissed in it to add a little color to it.

    26. Ja Rule – #RULETALK EP August 6th produced entirely by Harry Farud, featuring French Montana, Rick Ross, Ashanti & more.

    27. Looks like Lil Wayne has another gold album. He still won’t ever have an album that will outsell Juvenile’s opus “400 Degreez”, which sold over 6 million worldwide.

    28. No shit I used Chris Etrata’s name. You all want to use my name, I use on of your’s. Anyway, Montana’s going to rule.

      1. How would you know if he’s gonna rule anything if he can’t even outsell most popular rappers out now?

      2. You can’t compare French to those three legends. They’re an infinity times over that nigga.

      3. Nas, Jay Z, and Eminem’s debuts didn’t have as much hype, promotion, and features and French’s.

      4. Yes I can compare them. They started off in the same place. YOu think Columbia Records is an independent label?

      5. No, you can’t. They didn’t start at the same place. Nas, Jay Z, and Eminem didn’t release a bunch of mixtapes like French and they didn’t have his hype and promotion. Also, none of them were signed to Columbia Records.

      6. which could never happen. hes never going to have a song bigger than pop that but watch him try to recreate it a few times

      7. Nas was signed to columbia records. Not today be he signed with them for 10 years. Illmatic was released and bombed back when albums were selling. Montana will have bigger and bigger hits.

      8. Illmatic didn’t have as much hype, promotion, and features as Excuse My French, so it did okay.

      9. Everyone said the same thing about eminem, nas, and jay z and yet they had much bigger hits. Montana will have hits too. Illmatic had tons and tons of hype, if not guest so it was considered a failure when it did not make it to top 10. It had legs however and so will this one, even if it takes years.

      10. No, they didn’t. Montana will have one hit. Illmatic did not have a lot of hype and a lot of guest features. Excuse My French will be forgotten in time.

      11. They said the same thing about eminem, nas, and Jay Z and look how it turned out. Montana will follow the same path.

      12. No, they didn’t you lying ass nigga. They never said that about Em, Nas, and Jay. French will never follow the same path as those three EVER. Stop dickriding French Montana’s wack ass like he’s your brother.

      1. Ja Rule – #RULETALK EP August 6th produced entirely by Harry Farud, featuring French Montana, Rick Ross, Ashanti & more.
