Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 11/4/2012

For the third consecutive week, a new Hip Hop/R&B album entered the Top 5. Def Jam Records singer Ne-Yo released his fifth studio album to a #4 debut. The R.E.D. release shared its title with Game’s 2011 album, and features Wiz Khalifa.

E-40 & Too Short’s long-anticipated collaborative project History (f/k/a History Channel) released in three parts. The veteran Vallejo and Oakland, California pioneers released History: Function Music, History: Mob Music and a deluxe packaging of both releases. All three variations charted, making E-40 responsible for five studio releases in 2012 alone, following his Block Brochure: Welcome To The Soil series. Short Dog’s already released No Trespassing this year. This is his first official collaborative effort since The Dangerous Crew’s Don’t Try This At Home in 1995.

Lastly, Saigon’s second Greatest Story Never Told release also earned a Top 200 debut. Bread & Circuses is Sai’s second release with the Kottonmouth Kings’ Suburban Noize Records imprint, and sold just under 3,000 first-week units.

E-40 & Too Short Continue To Make History

E-40 brought Too Short into his marketing plan of multiple releases on the same day with the History series. The two biggest faces of Bay Area Hip Hop released their three different packagings of History last week. The deluxe edition, not listed below, sold another 4,900 units. History: Function Music, the top-seller one week in, features Tyga, Wiz Khalifa and Ice Cube. Production duties are divided, including work from veteran hit-maker and former Cosmic Slop Shop member Rick Rock, along with 40’s son Droop-E.

History: Mob Music, the more street-minded release of the two, features The Click’s B-Legit and Kurupt, with production contributions by Battlecat and J. Wells.

Saigon Continues To Tell His Story

After releasing his five-years-in-the-making Greatest Story Never Told last year, New Yorker Saigon returned with a sequel, Bread & Circuses. The album boasts involvement from trademark collaborator Just Blaze, along with collaborations such as stic.man, Lecrae and Chamillionaire.

In his interview with HipHopDX, Saigon noted that he made his second studio album with one-tenth of the budget for his debut. The release’s single “Not Like Them” has been circulating online for several months.

    1. 2800? no wonder saigon talkin about punchin officer ricky in the face

sad cause it seems like a pretty good album

    2. Damn Saigon should have done better than that but people are forgetting he dont have a major machine behind him and doesnt make popular music and have flavor of the month features on his album. I’m pretty sure if he got on a fruity loops beat and glamorized the gangster life and then got a flavor of the month feature he would have sold more.

      1. Nah, the album just sucked compared to GSNT part 1. You can see how the major influence of Just blaze on the first one made it fire.

      1. you can tell yourself that if it makes you feel better about your favorite rappers selling less but the fact is a lot of people think that album is great and they are willing to go out and pay for it

    3. that meek mill album go ham! and i really dont see all the hype about the k dot album i mean its ok got a couple of good joint but not even close to a classic like alot of people are sayin

      1. i think the problem is if you think the meek mill’s album (which most reviewers said was mediocre at best) goes ham you’re not going to get or appreciate kendricks album (which has been critically acclaimed and called a classic).

      2. @annoymous2 so your thoughts on an album should be based on other people’s opinions, these reviewers or whatever are just people like us, if an album is a classic to you it don’t mater if crictially acclaimed or not, you just go with what you like.

      3. Hey youngsta did you do the math for e40 and short album? You know it’s indie right? They made over 100,000.00 first week with no promo. I bet they ish keep selling. At this point it is probably a tax right off for them. E40 and short are the OG’s of the indie game son, they been doing this before your were born. They was selling KDot and Meek numbers out of the trunk in the early days so what are you saying nigga. Will Kdot and Meek have a career 20 years down the line in this hip hop game? No one knows only time will tell. E 40 and short own businesses and live in areas that kdot or meek can afford son so do the research and math before you start yapping.

    4. hahaha, told y’all old heads that grandpas e-40 and too short were going to flop. in a week or two, they’ll be off the charts while kendrick and meek are still selling.

      1. ^ quality > quantity huh? guess that’s why your man e-40 keeps releasing 3 albums in a day and continuously flops?

      2. Hey bitch ass youngsta did you do the math for e40 and short album? You know it’s indie right? They made over 100,000.00 first week with no promo. I bet they ish keep selling. At this point it is probably a tax right off for them. E40 and short are the OG’s of the indie game son, they been doing this before your were born. They was selling KDot and Meek numbers out of the trunk in the early days so what are you saying nigga. Will Kdot and Meek have a career 20 years down the line in this hip hop game? No one knows only time will tell. E 40 and short own businesses and live in areas that kdot or meek can afford son so do the research and math before you start yapping.

      3. Hey youngsta, you faggot, e-40 is an independent artist who just sold 12,000 albums in one week. He’s takin all the money. He sold just as much with his other projects this year. So add all that up, and he’s making some good money. Besides, how are you gonna compare someone like Meek Mill whose career is JUST starting to a cat like E-40 who has been rapping for 20 years you fuckin moron? Let’s see if Meek Mill is still selling records in 20 years, you clueless idiot.

      4. tax write offs? so i guess all the albums e-40 and too short put out over the past few years were tax write offs as well?

they were selling k.dot and meek numbers out of the trunk? so why can’t they do that now? because no one gives a shit about them anymore.

and who gives a fuck if it’s indie? that’s not an excuse. mac miller sold around 150,000 first week off an indie label with blue slide park.

and good for them on owning businesses and all that shit, but don’t try to change the subject.

    5. Add all these totals and you’ll get what Taylor Swift did her first week. Lmao @ “good to see hip hop selling”. Shit is pathetic

    6. Meek Mill and 2 Chainz doin big things. Don’t know who E-40 is, I’m guessing he underground, but damn he flopped. I didn’t know tech dropped an album, was it his debut? I heard him on Lil Wayne’s Carter 4, he’s one of the better new rappers out right now. I’m starting to like Kendrick Lamar, I think Slaughterhouse should take out Yellow Wolf and replace him with Kendrick. I don’t know who Saigon is either, probly another wack MC considering he only moved 2,000 units. Numbers don’t lie. If you flop, the music isn’t quality. These dudes flopping need to step their bars up.

      1. Tech N9ne, E40 and Too Short are whack old school rappers that nobody outside the internet give a fuck about. Saigon just another garbage indie rapper. Kendrick lamar is dope but his fans are overrating him.

      2. Yo, are you a fuckin retard? Tech Nine is one of the illest rappers out, and he’s been around since the 90’s you dumb fuck. Same with E-40 and Too Short, they’re legends who’s been around just as long. YOu stupid, idiotic faggot.

      3. Eye Control is just trolling. It’s funny but even funnier if you ignore him because he’ll have failed to annoy you guys.

        Eye Control= I Can Troll.

      4. eye control you need to learn your hip hop history smh tech has been out for about 15 years now. I dont even understand why people comment on just to troll. get a life loser go play with your dogs balls!

    7. Can someone tell me something? Who in the FUCK is Macklemore and how does he sell 120,000 units??? WTF??? Who is buying this shit? And the who fuck is buying 2 Stainz album? Saigon album is NOWHERE EVEN CLOSE to as good as his debut. It’s because Just Blaze handled all the production on his debut. He even said, the budget was only 1/10 the amount of his first album. I don’t really like his new album.

      1. Macklemore is a rapper from Seattle, WA that appeals to the underground fans mainly-they’re buying his album for the most part.
Not sure how Tity’s still on the charts for about 4 months now though. Maybe the kids bought all his albums?
Saigon’s album was ok to me. I appreciate your opinion on it though-Just Blaze is definitely a good producer.

    8. Watch out Mr Tauheed Epps, the boy Kendrick’s going to overtake you already. What Tity sold in four months, Kendrick’s sold in two weeks (almost).

    9. buhahaha! deze so called real rappers cant sell more den Lil Wayne and Rick Ross or 2 Chainz…. you all were wrong. ppl buying the real muzik. more sales = more quality muzik. niggaz dont waste deir money on wack muzik. swag

      1. dis nigga be jackin my username. Weezy be wack nowadays pushing back shit, when Kendrick Lamar be pushin dose dope ass songs.

oh, and wack=trap beatz, abc rhymes, corny punchlinez. swag

      2. kendrick sold more than ross and 2chainz first week and hes about to pass 2chainz after only 1 month out

ross can barely go gold i dont see how you put them in a category with wayne

    10. LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!!!! SO AFTER TAKING CHEAP SHOTZ AT RICK ROSS TO GAIN PUBLICITY AND ATTENTION FOR HIS ALBUM…THAT BUM ASS SAIGON COULDNT EVEN MOVE 10K? LOOOOOOOL.HOW COME THESE NO-SKILL RAPPER NEVER LEARN?IF U THINK SOMEONE ELSE IS WHACK…THEN MAKE BETTER MUSIC…NOT TRASH TALKING OTHER RAPPERS.HE IS UNKNOWN..N HE IS DISSIN ROSS..HE IS JUST MAKING ROSS MORE POPULAR.THIS SHIT DIDNT WORK FOR BENZINO,CANIBUS,CURTIS JACKSON…AND IT SURE AINT GONNA WORK FOR U.2.8K LOOOOL.THIS IS SHAMEFUL.THIS DUDE BETTER GET A 9-5 JOB.COZ HE SURE AINT FEEDING ON THAT…LOOOOLL 2.8K LOOOOOOL

    11. SAIGON FLOPPED SO HARD, HOW HE EVEN CAN TALK TRASH ABOUT RICK ROSS OR 2 CHAINZ WHEN HIS ALBUM FLOPPED AND SUCKED AT THE SAME DAMN TIME.

      1. I’m a big saigon fan but the album is average for saigon standards (first album). Big difference without Just Blaze production and sequencing. GSNT is not better then GFID or 2Chainz – be real not bias in 2012 please.

      2. Where Rozay’s gold at???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

    12. Where’s Willie Roberts gold album at?

I thought God Forgives I Don’t was about to move major units?

Where the gold or platinum for that, huh? huh? huh? huh? huh? huh? huh? huh? huh? huh? huh? huh? huh? huh?

Where’s Officer Willie Roberts Gold at?

Street King Immortal ’bout crush Rozay’s numbers hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahaaaa

      1. Get off the crack, sport. Fiddy’s last two projects were freebies on the net. Ross will at least hit gold status, plus he’s charting singles. For a guy with the worst fans in hip hop I’d say that’s pretty fucking impressive.

      2. Let Ross stand on his own without bringing up someone WHO ALREADY HAS SURPASSED Ross’ ENTIRE sales as some kind of “proof”, jackass.

    13. “kendrick sold more than ross and 2chainz first week and hes about to pass 2chainz after only 1 month out”

      Yet, Kendrick won’t go platinum.

    14. It still cost E-40 and Too Short money to distribute their albums to the various indie stores. They basically got 2 weeks to make as much as they can. After they split the profit, it’s not like they’re making millions. The real issue should be if the albums are actually good or not. Function sounded better than The Block Brochure series, but lyrically it was fucking awful. If you like beats, buy it. If you want deep insight, don’t.

      1. Get your math and business mind right. Anyone clocking anything close to a quarter million in one week is winning. They have a core fan base and have been doing this for years so they would know the cost and profit margins. Instead of presenting some sucker talk perhaps you should study the blueprint.

    15. so i knew nothing bout short and forty. ill defininently get that even tho i have equal opportunity to get k. dot or weak mill. my barber gave me a copy of meek for free i was lyke bra i dnt even fuckin want this shit. its been sittin in my car unplayed ever since.

    16. not hatin on meek but its kinda funny hes not even gettin close to his 1 millie first week even k.daot third week is as high as meeks second thats kinda week still respect for meek tho pretty solid debut

    17. fuck hip hop, shit don’t sell anymore! all these hip hop artists need to start doing black country music there’s where money at and these crackas gonna love it and buy it.

    18. dis dat shit i don’t like! how the hell is neyo hiphop??? because he’s featured on some of those?
hell naw! ain’t fallen for it. who’s behind this shit, leaving many good R&B artist out the rotation.
      so sick of the bullshit

    19. SEAN P MADE the chart twice NICE. album 4.5/5. And more good hip hop acts need to come out at the same time and support each other is the only way it will sale like country or pop.

    20. GO SAIGON! GO SAIGON!!!

FUCKING FLOP CAN’T HAPPEN TO A BIGGER CORNBALL SAKC OF SHIT…

EAT A DICK BRIAN WHILE I GANGSTER NUT ON DAUGHTERS

    21. damn saigon,i guess you see now hatin only gets you so far. like under 3,000 units sold in a week far. its ugly for ya bruh.

    22. i repeat..who the fuck is this Saigon (more like FAGon) nigga…the nigga hounds Ross and 2chains but his bitch ass dont sell..FAGAT!

    23. so you have to sell copious amounts of units to have a right to diss Rick Ross and 2 Chainz?

not even a Saigon fan, but is this the logic that’s presented here? really?

    24. Willie Roberts run this rap game! It’s all about Willie Roberts. Accept it motherfuckers, accept it!!!!

    25. Officer Willie will never run shit… How the fat fuck gonna run rap, when he ain’t got a plat to his fuckin name?

      Don’t worry, I’ll wait

      1. ross has 5 or 6 albums so you cant compare totals like that

kendricks on his first album and without half the promo, features, videos and buzz and he still sold more than rickys last album in the first week

mtvs so called hottest rapper in the game? yeah right

    26. “50’s free projects were what you call mixtapes”

His last so called “mixtape” was being promoted by Fiddy as an album.

    27. “They have a core fan base and have been doing this for years so they would know the cost and profit margins”

Thanks for the business lecture Gordon Gekko. Everyone’s aware E-40 is involved in more than just music, but the fact remains that these guys know that whatever money they make off these albums goes right back into making the next one, and the next one after that. From a hustler’s standpoint it may seem impressive, but what do people always point out on here. Quality vs. Quantity.

    28. LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!!!! SO AFTER TAKING CHEAP SHOTZ AT RICK ROSS TO GAIN PUBLICITY AND ATTENTION FOR HIS ALBUM…THAT BUM ASS SAIGON COULDNT EVEN MOVE 10K? LOOOOOOOL.HOW COME THESE NO-SKILL RAPPER NEVER LEARN?IF U THINK SOMEONE ELSE IS WHACK…THEN MAKE BETTER MUSIC…NOT TRASH TALKING OTHER RAPPERS.HE IS UNKNOWN..N HE IS DISSIN ROSS..HE IS JUST MAKING ROSS MORE POPULAR.THIS SHIT DIDNT WORK FOR BENZINO,CANIBUS,CURTIS JACKSON…AND IT SURE AINT GONNA WORK FOR U.2.8K LOOOOL.THIS IS SHAMEFUL.THIS DUDE BETTER GET A 9-5 JOB.COZ HE SURE AINT FEEDING ON THAT…LOOOOLL 2.8K LOOOOOOL..U COULD PROBABLY SELL MORE IF U WALK DOWN THE STREET AND PLEAD WITH PPLE TO BUY UR ALBUM FOR $5.HE STILL WOULD MAKE MORE MONEY CUTTING THE MIDDLE MAN.2.8K? WTF? SERIOUSLY?LOOOOOOOOL
