Today is Turkey Day when people all over the nation rejoice with family members, friends, lovers convene to feast and count their various blessings in our lives. HipHopDX wishes you a Happy Thanksgiving, and that you had minimal trouble traveling via planes, trains, and automobiles to get to your holiday destination.
Americans generally acknowledge the last Thursday of November for the following: the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade; watching basketball and the Cowboys and Lions (lose surprise the fuck out of everyone) on TV; Native American and Pilgrim memorabilia; and the glorious food we eat to make us feel like Oliver Twist at the dinner table. But if you want to pardon a turkey from the wrath of the oven, you should listen to the greatest ode to chicken by legendary rap duo Organized Konfusion.
Prince Poetry and Pharoahe Monch dropped their classic single “Who Stole My Last Piece of Chicken?” off their 1991 self-titled debut album, and the video hilariously details their chicken fetish and childhood memories being reared in the storied Hip Hop haven of the Southside Jamaica section in Queens, New York. The song title and chorus was inspired by the dinner table scene from the Richard Pryor movie Which Way Is Up? (which later inspired the classic dinner scene in Eddie Murphy’s The Nutty Professor). Both MCs trade nostalgic bars about being thankful and being excited to have chicken cooked by their mothers.
The best facts about chicken are that it’s cheaper than turkey and eating too much gives you a huge protein rush — as opposed to turkey’s inner chemical tryptophan which makes you sleep. And if we’re splitting animal hairs, it’s much healthier than eating spiced ham. So if you want to avoid bailing out your cousin and what not, be kind to one another and politely ask out loud who wants dibs on the last piece.
