HipHopDX’s 50 Best Songs Of 2016

2016 was politically and socially gut-wrenching, but the soundtrack to this turbulent year was superb. Whether you’re a crate-digging backpacker or a mumble-rap aficionado, there was plenty of ear candy from 2016’s Pez dispensary.

This year, HipHopDX is distinguishing between the best rap songs (a.k.a. the most lyrically and sonically potent) and the ones that had the most impact culturally. That’s why we’ve made two lists: the 50 Best Hip Hop & Rap Songs Of 2016 and the Top 50 Most Lit Songs of 2016. The goal here is not to widen the divide between purist and partier but to give excellence its due. Peep game.

2016 proved lyricism is alive and well in Hip Hop, despite cries for the return of the ’90s. Rappers like Royce Da 5’9, Skyzoo and eLZhi gave us supreme bars backed by equally stalwart production. But mainstream rappers such as Chance the Rapper and YG carried their lyrical weight, too, as evidenced in this list. Check out the year’s finest rap tunes below.

When LeBron James got Top on the phone, we never expected K. Dot to “Levitate” to Beyonce levels and hit us with an unannounced “album” out of the blue. But it happened.

    09. ScHoolboy Q f. Kanye West – “THat Part”

Producer: Cardo, Yung Exclusive, Sounwave, Cubeatz

Groovy Q spits lively braggadocio over an infectiously eerie beat, and Kanye’s quotable-filled verse is the cherry on top.

    07. Kanye West f. Andre 3000 – “30 Hours”

Producer: Kanye West, Karriem Riggins & Mike Dean

Yeezy has had a rough year and “30 Hours” is like an eerie premonition of what was to come. “The voices won’t stop talking to me/just leave me alone,” he raps with precision, reminding us why he’s in the upper echelon of contemporary MCs. Name one genius that ain’t crazy.

    03. Kanye West f. Kid Cudi & Kelly Price – “Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1”

Producer: Kanye West, Mike Dean, Rick Rubin, Metro Boomin, Allen Ritter & Noah Goldstein

Bleached assholes aside, Kanye proved that saying the most nonsensical things could equate to arguably the most memorable verse of the year. Just drop this joint in the club and try to disagree.

    02. Chance The Rapper f. 2 Chainz & Lil Wayne – “No Problems”

    Producer: Brasstracks

What do you need? Gospel, anthems, bangers? No problem. There isn’t a lane that Chance, Tunechi and Tity Boi didn’t swerve into on this monster record.

    01. Kanye West f. Chance The Rapper, Kirk Franklin, The-Dream & Kelly Price – “Ultralight Beam”

Producer: Kanye West, Mike Dean, Chance the Rapper, Swizz Beatz Rick Rubin, Plain Pat, DJ Dodger Stadium, Noah Goldstein, Derek Watkins

The Life of Pablo was a monumental album and West recruited a laundry list of talented artists to contribute to the project. Co-produced by Swizz Beatz and Rick Rubin, the song swells with an angelic choir, Price’s impeccable voice and Chance’s baptismal lyricism, adding more musical depth to an already intricate opus.

    1. How is Drake not on this chart? Views had at least 3 number ones on billboard top 100! You must be a meek mill fan! It’s okay thou he doing great without a mention from this list!

      1. I got a few disagreements with this list, but absence of Drake is not one of them! And yes the “Lit” list is where he belongs, not the “Best” list.

    2. Not sure why ‘Famous’ didn’t make the list. I feel it’s one of the best songs on the album. Also, that Chance, Wayne and 2 Chainz track is too high. No song with a 2 Chainz verse should be that high on a ‘Best of the Year’ list.

    3. Thanks for not puttin shit like Work and Panda in this list. Btw I think you overrated Gucci by putting his boring song at number 14. Was that track really better than the well-thought-out “Blackman”, or J. Cole’s “Everybody Dies”?

    4. LOL…Somebody’s staff is hatin on Drake for real…but guess they didn’t realize he has a writing credit on that Kanye song..
      Summer Sixteen
      No Shopping
      Why You Always Hatin
      Sneakin
      2 Birds and One Stone
      Weston Road Flows
      Hype
All these tracks deserved to be on this list. U can call him fake, accuse him of not writing , call him Canada Dry, too wanna be. it doesn’t matter: Drake run tings in this era and until you give him his respect, he will simply continue to make you miserable.

    5. Is all of Kanye West’s The Life of Pablo on here?!?! Why? That was his his worst offering with barely anything memorable at all, and this shit is covering your top 50 songs of the year?!?! Come on!!! There were so many better songs. Can’t believe how over hyped this cd is. (All coming form a huge Kanye West Fan). No Ab-Soul? No Anderson .Paak? No Joe Budden? No Saba? No Jay IDK? No Frank Ocean? This list needs to be remade! Love you guys though!

    6. All that J Cole Chance and Kanye dickriding this is supposed to be about the lyrics? How bout looking further than 3 albums did the whole site hear nothing from Andre 3000 – Solo, Black Thought & Styles P – Making a Murderer, Westside Gunn & Conway – The Cow, Smoke DZA Styles & Jadakiss – Milestone,Lloyd Banks AON and Halloween Havoc 3 entire projects had no bars? No mention of Crooked I or Budden …….not lyrical enough?

    7. I watched that SNL performance of Kanye and remember thinking ‘this is the stupidest shit I’ve ever seen’. Best song of 2016 though apparently..

    8. the top 10 list is trash…Pablo album was not very good, decent but not very good. Why not give a shout out to the 40 other people that worked on that album too? Ye has fallen off.
