Bruce Springsteen’s 2001 single, “American Skin (41 Shots),” was one dedicated to and inspired by the memory of Amadou Diallo, a 23-year-old Bronx man who was killed by four NYPD officers in 1999. In what has been a recurring nightmare in American society, all four were acquitted of their second-degree murder charges.
The legendary Mary J. Blige recorded a somber cover of the song, which serves as the first single off a yet-to-be titled new project with guest vocals from Mr. Kendrick Lamar. Blige, who recently interviewed Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, oddly broke out singing Springsteen’s original during their chat, but it turns out there was a logical reason for that. Check it out above.
