The Source is sharing its voice on the debate around diversity represented in the movie industry, specifically the Oscar Awards, through the cover story of its most recent issue, entitled Hip Hop & Hollywood: Real Recognizes Reel.
The cover of the publication shows an Oscar Award holding up a fist for Black power. The trophy is surrounded with movie reels that include images from Straight Outta Compton, Creed, Concussion and Dope.
The story “delves into how the Academy have been embarrassed to take small steps in the wake of the backlash to the Oscar nominee whiteout, but is it too little, too late, and too unlikely to sway the Oscar members who vote?” according to a press release.
The publication also makes its picks for who it says should have been nominated for the Academy Awards, but weren’t.
The Oscars have received criticism for what many deem insufficiency in representing the diversity in Hollywood. There are no actors or actresses of color nominated for the supporting or lead role awards. Straight Outta Compton, a record-breaking box office hit, was only nominated for Original Screenplay.
Will Smith is among those who are not attending the Academy Awards in a show of solidarity against the industry that they say does not support minorities. Smith played the lead role in Concussion.
The Source’s Hip Hop & Hollywood: Real Recognizes Reel issue is on stands now.
The Oscars are set to air at 8:30 p.m. EST today (February 28).
