The Oscars announced its nominees for its 88th annual awards today (January 14). The N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Comptonhas been nominated for Original Screenplay, according to Variety. The Academy Awards are scheduled to be held February 28 and be hosted by Chris Rock. The ceremony is slated to air on ABC.
Jonathan Herman, Andrea Berloff, S. Leigh Savidge & Alan Wenkus and Andrea Berloff are recognized for their work writing Straight Outta Compton. Other motion pictures nominated in the category are Tom Hanks’ Bridge of Spies, Ex Machina, the Disney animated feature Inside Out and Spotlight.
Nominated for Best Picture are The Big Short,Bridge of Spies, Brooklyn, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, The Revenant, Room and Spotlight.
The Revenantreceived 11 other Oscar nominations, including one for Leonardo DiCaprio as leading actor.

The Weeknd is nominated for “Earned It” on the Fifty Shades of Grey soundtrack.
Straight Outta Compton has also received nominations from the Producers Guild Awards, the NAACP Image Awards and others. It spent three weeks at the top of the box office upon its release this summer. The F. Gary Gray-directed film is the highest-grossing film ever from a Black director.
