#OscarsLessWhite: “Moonlight” & “13th” Among 2017 Oscar Nominees

The nominees are in for the 89th annual Academy Awards, with Moonlight and Fences securing several nominations.

After taking home a win for Best Drama Motion Picture at the Golden Globes earlier this year, Moonlight picked up Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Best Director, and more. It got eight nominations in total.

The Denzel Washington-directed Fences received four nominations, including Best Picture and Lead Actor.

The film that got the most nominations was Damien Chazelle’s La La Land, which scored 14. That ties it with Titanic and All About Eve for the most nominations in Oscar history.

On the documentary front, Ava DuVernay’s film on mass incarceration, 13th, received a nom for Best Documentary Feature. O.J.: Made in America and I Am Not Your Negro were also nominated for Best Documentary Feature.

Today’s (January 24) announcements come roughly one year after the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag went viral due to a lack of diversity from the nominees. This year’s group of nominees include six black actors, a record high.

      1. The best thing about white ppl is that other races can say w.e they want about us./.we just go about our day. we don’t complain we don’t cry we don’t make it a big thing for months..we laugh and move on to our $$

    1. Moonlight is Hollywood agenda to make blacks embrace homosexuality. Not surprised its getting all the awards. Hollywood gay propaganda

      1. Look who is behind pushing the gay agenda for the gentiles, same (((people))) behind: communism, cultural marxism, feminism etc…

      2. Hey, black people, stop making EVERY F***KING THING about yourselves. Shut up. Pretentious a** people. Act as if you’re the only people in the world that exist. FOH already.

      1. I REALLY DON’T GET IT. WHY ARE YOU ON A BLACK ENTERTAINMENT WEBSITE IF YOU FEEL THAT TOWARDS BLACK PEOPLE!? SERIOUSLY!!! AT THE END OF THE DAY… YOU LOVE OUR CULTURE! YOU ARE VERY JEALOUS ABOUT BLACK PEOPLE. YOUR RACE ALWAYS WERE!

          1. No! Your culture is Lack of Knowledge when it comes to Black Culture! Maybe you read more books written by Black authors, instead from a White prospective, you may gain some knowledge about Black Culture.

        1. This aint BET boy, imma watch 12 Years A Slave, the former best picture comedy winner. Always slaps a big grin across my face, ahh the good ol’ days.

      1. Nope. Usually about slavery and how white people are the Devil over and over and over and over and over and over . . .

    2. Moonlight isn’t about “pushing a gay agenda.” It’s a far more complex movie at that; in fact, a very brilliant screenplay and story addressing a variety of issues. As a heterosexual make who supports the LGBT community, I admit it was hard for me to watch at times, but there is a brilliance to this film on several levels. There comes a point that people need to grow up. If you have something to say, at least be intelligently constructive. The hate that flows from black to white; white to black, non-gay to gay, etc. is a mark of ignorance.

      1. You say it is not about the gay agenda and then describe how it is about the gay agenda. This film is only getting recognition because of its identity politics.

    3. Fances was aight Denzel was real, Moonight is straight garbage. La La Land is MOTY easily. Manchester by the Sea was great (with horrible music though), Hacksaw Rigde great war movie, Arrival, Hell or High Water both overated AF. There you have it. Not gonna bother watching the other ones. Wait, there is that Ghibli animated The Red Turtle I’m gonna have to check out

    4. Oscars are about TALENT though, it should be no surprise that there are no blacks there. Stick to the BET awards where 27 people can “produce” a song or whatever the fuck they do.
