Lupe Fiasco Responds To “Lasers” Leak And Negative Reviews

Lupe Fiasco’s third album, Lasers, is scheduled for a March 8 release, but pirated copies have already made their way to the Internet, and Lupe says the negative reviews are “crushing.” In an effort to minimize piracy, Lupe and Atlantic have been releasing weekly singles since February 15. During the three weeks leading up to the album release, fans had the opportunity to essentially purchase half of the album via iTunes and also buy an iTunes Pass, which provided access to song snippets and exclusives.

“I never thought Lasers would inspire so much negativity,” Lupe wrote to his nearly 400,000 Twitter followers. “Reading the comments and reactions is crushing.”

Lupe faced similar piracy in 2006 with his Atlantic debut, Food & Liquor, however the album received mostly positive reviews. During the weeks and months leading up to the release of Lasers, Lupe spoke very candidly about the compromise reached between himself and Atlantic to keep the album from being shelved. After reacting to the initial reviews, Lupe also addressed the fans that protested on his behalf and drew attention to Lasers.

To all the Lupe fans who protested and petitioned you did a GREAT thing. Don’t let people belittle what u achieved.about 3 hours ago

“Love always shines every time remember to smile has always been a ‘note to self’ the product of trying to figure a reason to keep going,” Lupe added.

    1. wasnt it him who said he didnt like his own album yesterday?

now hes crushed the fans dont like it LOL

      1. you’re taking it out of context.. he clearly says he hates it because it stands for all the shit he’s been through with his label and all that.. he doesn’t literally hate the songs.

    2. lupe should take fnf and join with good music, atlantic is doing him dirty, i love the album and will buy it on march 8, anybody know if im beamin is on the physical disc?

      1. But Lupe has success Budden is a lazy fuck that know one knows or cares about…Budden Legacy in rap will be zero

      2. Umm, tread gently bballs, Joe went the independent digital route after one album on Def Jam, which was 8 years ago. Maybe you don’t like him which is fine, but dude’s been growing an underground following ever since then and Mood Muzik is easily one of the top mixtape series ever made. And now that slaughterhouse is with Shady sit on that opinion until The Great Escape and the next Slaughterhouse album come out. Joe puts more effort into his writing than a lot of good MC’s do.

      3. Not a problem sir. I never really made it clear that I’m a Joe Budden fan. He’s in my top 5, possibly top 3. I’m not that big a fan of Lupe, but I respect his talent and believe he could be successful independently.

      4. U should probably listen to budden before saying something so dumb..i remember when he challenged method man to a battle like 2 years back..method man said straight up hed do it but that he doubted he could beat budden. When a damn great like meth is even the least bit worried about budden i dont see why lupe shouldnt be..i mean lupes not bad but fuck budden would rap circles around him. Prolly the only song you kno by budden is pump it up lololol

    3. The only reason the album is getting shitty reviews across the internet is because it’s a pop focused album that Atlantic focused so much attention on being radio-friendly and forgot about all of his true fans. The poeple giving it bad reviews are those who were waiting for a CD with the depth of F&L and The Cool and Lasers isn’t it. Atlantic put Lupe is this position and it’s a shame that after 4 years of waiting this is what happens. Fuck Atlantic! I’m still anxiously awaiting March 8th and am going to make the best of it

      FnF Up

      1. Boycott all Atlantic artists as well.Labels need to go down as all they do is stifle creativity and offer us stupid marketing tricks as rewards

    4. lupe needs to realize atlantic is a broken label. there are hardly any labels out that would allow creativity, but i would deffenitly give good music a thought for him, as kanye does recognize good music and i think would deffinetly allow him to make a classic.

      1. It is not unreasonable to assume that he knows atlantic is a broken label. Just in case though, you should tweet him that and maybe he will give you a job for suggesting something he never thought of.

      1. man that would be soo good for sure. i was hoping jay electronica would sign with rhymesayers as well since he’d fit in pretty well.

    5. i don’t care what Lasers sounds like!!! If Lupe fans don’t get him to at least 500,000 we won’t get the LupEND that we have been dreaming about for 4 years now! BUY IT ANYWAY!!!!

      1. but a record even though it sounds like garbage.. if the fans support his music and it fucking sucks he’ll make more garbage.. smart strategy there sport. if it sucks don’t buy it period. should be common sense

    6. he should get out of atlantic, join kanye, cudi, and pusha at G.O.O.D or with Jay-Z at Rock Nation either those or go indie, just stay away from aftermath, cashmoney and def jam

      1. Why does everyone say this? Yea head over to good music or rock nation and be slept on like both labels entire rosters minus kanye and jay z..whens the last time common dropped? why u think j cole aint dropped yet? Because neither label let their artists drop..way way more so for rock nation.

      1. It does. I thought Lu was GOAT but I can’t talk that way bout him anymore. The beats and hooks on this record are more suited for one Republic and other pop crap. I am pissed. WINS/Beautiful Lasers/All Black only 3 tracks worth a relisten. And they almost ruined Beautiful Lasers with autotune.

    7. “Crushing” hell yeah, but then at the same time most of the people making the negative comments are people who are used to his signature sound. I say the good thing that can come from this album is that it can be at least an intro for people who may have not listened to Lupe and prefer that type sound. As a true fan I will still buy the album to support the man, because I do want to hear a G.R.A.P a F&L2 and a LupEND.

    8. While I understand why people don’t “like” the direction Atlantic forced Lu 2 go, LASERS is still a dope album and I WILL b coppin’ it next week. Hold ya head Mr. Jaco…

    9. “Crushing” hell yeah, but then at the same time most of the people making the negative comments are people who are used to his signature sound. I say the good thing that can come from this album is that it can be at least an intro for people who may have not listened to Lupe and prefer that type sound. As a true fan I will still buy the album to support the man.

    10. The internets a sea of negativity, what do you expect??

lol, thats why the smart artists (Jay Z, Eminem, etc) dont use no twitter bullshit…… You go online and you get a billion people telling you they want you to make a billion types of records

“man, @Lupe Fiasco needs to keep it underground”

“Man, @Lupefiasco needs to get off that nerd shit and make a club banger”

“Man, @Lupefiasco needs to do sunmmin diffrent”

“Man, @Lupefiasco needs to stick to what he we know him for”

SMH, If I were an artist I wouldnt fuck with no twitter or facebook or none of that shit, Art is suppose to be about expressing yourself, not taking every assholes 2 cents into account and making yourself miserable trying to please other people

Oh, and lets not forget that at least 75% of the people online giving you all this criticism/advice/hatred are also just gonna Bootlegg your shit anyway

Go For yourself, fuck an Atlantic, Fuck a bunch of kids online, do you and you’ll be alot happier

    11. LMFAO!!!!! All those negative comments could be coming from the same 50 trolls that go from site to site and song to song just spreading their hate. Or just clown ass kids talking shit. I cant believe niggas even pay attention to that garbage. The internet has turned the rap game into WWE. What a joke!

    12. I listened to F&L, The Cool and all the mixtapes. Lupe is top ten period. And I don’t see how there can be negative reviews for Lasers. Yes it’s not Lupe’s best album, you can thank Atlantic Records for that. However even on his worst day Lupe is pretty damn good. And that goes for his albums. Lasers is a 4/5 album, which is pretty low for Lupe but still-pretty damn good. And the good songs on here are REALLY good. Letting Go, Words I Never Said, Beautiful Lasers, Break The Chain and ALL BLACK EVERYTHING should all be in Lupe’s top 15 songs.

    13. Fuck the critics and fuck what these butt-hurt haters say. Lupe is better than your favorite rapper pound for pound. Can’t wait for next Tues to cop Lasers.

    14. I knew this was gonna happen even Apathy knew that sh*t is bound to happen right at the moment when Lupe describe how messed up his process is with Atlantic.

Look everybody should know this by now that Hip Hop never belongs to a giant corporate record label and I can’t believe Lupe made a bad decision to stay with them for far too long. I hope this a learn lesson to both him and the fans to never trust corporate America that is destroying the culture of media entertainment art form as well as the economy.

    15. “You forced a massive corporation to bow to the whim of the people. Thats a glorious thing.”

EXCUSE ME? IS THIS NIGGA SERIOUS?
THEY FORCED HIM TO MAKE SONG HE AINT WANT TO, MAINSTREAM SELLLOUT SONGS[he was forced he aint sell out] AND THEY FORCED THE LABELS HANDS?
      LIKE IS YOU SERIOUS NIGGA?
THE LABEL JUST FORCED YOU TO MAKE SHITTY SONGS FOR THEM AND THEY GAVE YOU THE BEATS, WHAT THEY WANTED YOU TO RAP ABOUT AND SLAPPED LASERS ON IT.

NIGGA PLEASE ATLANTIC RECCORDS MADE LUPE BEND OVER.
THATS WHAT THE FANS DONT FUCKING UNDERSTAND.

      FUCK ATLANTIC RECCORDS
FUCK JIVE(YOU FUCKED BIG BOI THANG UP)
FUCK ALL THOSE LABEL PIECES OF SHIT OUT OF TOUCH RAN BY OLD ASS CRACKER OR UNCLE TOM ASS BITCHES WHO DONT KNOW SHIT ABOUT HIP HOP
I YALL MOTHERFUCKERS IN A CAR ACCIDENT AND DIE OR BE PARALYZED FOR THE REST OF YO LIVES WITH YO DICK/PUSSY CUT OFF!

      1. That dick was in your sisters pussy and your 19 yr old daughter in the future last nite bitch(YES I AM A TIME TRAVELLER FAGGOT)

    16. SERIOUSLY IF LUPE DONT LIKE HOW THEY HANDLED HIS SHIT, HE SHOULD MAKE THE FANS DONT BUY HIS ALBUM SO HIS SHIT COULD FLOP AND THEY WOULD HAVE TO DROP HIM AND HE’D GET PICKED UP BY G.O.O.D. MUSIC OR ROC NATION OR SOMETHING.

      1. you fool. if he did that he would be in violation of his contract and could literally have his career (and life) flushed down the toilet. think before you make such moronic statements

    17. Lupe is a clown, this album actually has decent buzz everywhere but the internet, watch it be his most succesful but he’s getting butt hurt about a bunch of opinions from people who stole his leaked album

If it makes you feel better, even an album they did like wouldnt have gotten them to pay for it

Anybody who cares what the people online say about their record to the point where there “Crushed” about it is a dumb motherfucker

“So, you stole my album before it came out huh???.Well, thats nice, what do ya think”

      SMH, fuck outta here

    18. I think I’m done listining to Hip Hop. Sooner or later everyone just sells their soul/freedom/creativity..
Not saying Lupe can’t get it back. He has to leave Atlantic, not sure if its that simple. The Album is truly disappointing.

      ..Well I still got J.Cole..
If J.Cole goes out like this with his debut, like Wale and B.o.B did… I’m done with Hip Hop. I’ll tune in to pick up a Roots new album but that’s about it

      1. Mike Meraz stop been a close minded pr*ck and listen to more Hip Hop. For f*ck sake listen to Def Jux, Anticon, Rhymesayers, Babygrande, Fake Four, etc. indie Hip Hop record label.

Seriously dude stop been so “Hip Hop Is Dead” Dick rider will ya?

    19. It’s disappointing to see fans bail on him like this. No, the album isn’t a classic, but it’s still has that Lupe message in it, it’s just harder to listen to because of all of the pop surrounding the album. It would have been incredible if Atlantic didn’t fuck it up. I still love Lupe, but this album wont get as much play as The Cool and F&L. Still gonna support him and buy it though.

And I also disagree with Lupe on the situation. He seems shocked that the album is getting bad reviews, meanwhile he was the first one to say he hated it. What did he expect? It was definitely a bad business choice to say you hate your album right before it is released. That going to majorly decrease sales.

Nevertheless, the album is still better than any albums I heard in 2010. Lupe still speaks the truth on this and is still super lyrical on a lot of the tracks. So give him a break. But F&L2 will be 10X better.

      1. I agree. Lupe did his thing. He should know that you’ll never satisfy all. If you’re a bigger artist you’ll have more people riding with you and more people kicking dirt. I ride with Lupe. He doesn’t just hit you with hollow music. He actually tries to get a point out. He’d do pioneers proud b/c not many do that nowadays.

    20. I woke up this morning, knowing I would get 2 brand new Lupe tracks automatically sent thru itunes pass. I was so happy.”Coming Up” & “Outta My Head” is what they gave me. Man my day sucked.

    21. MAN YOU LUPE FANS IS DUMB MOTHERFUCKERS.
GO AHED BUY THE ALBUM, MAKE HIM STAY ON ATLANTIC AND WATCH WHEN HE RELEASES A NEXT ALBUM AFTER A LONG TIME.
OF IF HE RELEASES IT ITS GOING BE AN ATLANTIC AGENDA MADE ALBUM EVEN WORSE THEN THIS ONE.
HE NEEDS TO GET DROPPED SO HE CAN GO TO GOOD MUSIC OR ROC NATION OR ANY OTHER GOOD NATION THAT KNOWS WHAT THE FUCK THEY DOING
SHIT LOOK WHAT HAPPENED TO SAIGON

    22. Damn….its the same thing that happened to Nas(I Am, Nastradamas) all over again…and once again just like with Nas his fans betray and shit on him and make it seem like HE was the one who chose to do those songs.

      1. I Am was a classic album that dont get enough praise and anyone doubtin it needs to go back, listen and recognize.

      2. R thank you. I own every motherfuckin nas cd hes ever put out minus the distant relatives one ive heard it just have yet to pick it up and i keep lookin for when he went pop or fell off..im missin it i think because i am is sick as fuck and so is nastradamus so apparently the album that nas pulled a 360 is missing because to me it all sounds like hiphop and not radio hiphop minus a few singles. And if it is these few singles that people say he went pop to or whatever show me one rapper to not have one or two weak tracks especially with a discography like his..

    23. I reckon he’ll leave atlantic cos thats what he needs to do. Why wouldn’t he now. Lupe will come back with a classic this aint it for him believe that

    24. I’ve seen the lil john infograph like 17 times tryna scroll through this article.

Food & Liquor was crazy dope.

    25. Just got the CD. I think its all awesome except for his trey songz tune and ‘i don’t want to care right now’.

      1. its too pop…i thought i was going to be amazed like when i listened to his first two albums…..he’ll sale more with this album but b/c of the popness to it, most hip heads won’t like it……damn you atlantic records……..

    26. I really like Lupe…I do, one of my favorite albums (ever) is The Cool. This is not the Lupe that I know. This album, I’m sorry to say lacks everything that I enjoy about Lupe Fiasco. This probably should have never been released. My advice is to put a great mixtape together that is basically the Laser’s he would have released and give it away.

      1. Yea bro I feel you, cuz “Superstar” got airplay, and that song was dope. His radio/label arguement isnt really that compelling. Maybe he’s movin in a new direction and thats cool cause he can do whatever he wants. But yea I bought the cool album, from “go go gadget flow” to “fighters” and “little weapon” to “hip hop saved my life”// man that album was really dope, I used to listen to it without skippin through. I aint bashin lupe or ridin lupe, but whatever good music he put out Im content with it, I mean what more can I ask for.

    27. dammit lupe this album is garbage…i feel like i’m listening to techno……i’ve been looking forward to this ablum, i’m still going to buy it, but i dont like it…..

      1. they are goin to buy it to show support to an artist that can and will actually speak truth and skill. It’s an obvious answer >_>

      2. Yall act like lupe feeds you or somethin. If you dont care for the album you dont have to buy it, this also doesnt mean that you hate lupe it just means you didnt wanna waste 15 bucks just to “support” him..trust me guys im sure hes not starving he really doesnt need people buyin it for the hell of it. If this album flops maybe it will show his label to back off and let dude work so it could be a good thing..

      3. wait so people actually going out and buying cd’s is what’s wrong with hip hop? lol

At least the dude is supporting an artist that has earned his respect instead of turning his back on him. Even if he doesnt like his direction its still a class move to support an artist that u respect.

    28. not gonna lie lupe ur first 2 albums were 2 dope. THis one is straight too. But I suggest you drop that epic mixtape like the last one and it will be awesome!!

    29. i like the album hes bringing something different to the table and if you listen to his lyrics its superb his word play is crazy on this album he talks about alot of issues that needed to be adressed and u can relate too its a lil on the sining side with the hooks alot but it never bothers me please dont sleep on this dude lupe is the truth

    30. look none of you actually know lupe fiasco personally stop saying this isnt the lupe you know. if you really love this man so much support the nigga

      1. ^^^one of the main reasons underground or dope artists will never sell again. Lil wayne’s fans will buy his shit but lupe’s own fans wont, yeah fans of “real” hip hop really knows how to get favorite artist put on to the masses

      2. Thats because if your a fan of lil wayne ur prolly a 15 yr old girl and will have ur parents go buy you it. And if your a fan of say idk talib kweli your probably broke as fuck thus why you can relate to the depth of their lyrics. Idk just the way it seems to someone whos broke as fuck and loves real hiphop..

    31. This album was good, but overall I say his best was the Cool. . The Cool had more depth to it, and it was more personal. Lasers had 3 fillers on it, giving us 9 tough tracks. I blame Atlantic for the negativity that the album has and will recieve. . Keep doin ya thing Lupe!

    32. lupe..A crybaby hipster with with stupid techno production. sick flow though. check that track “swang on em” off one of Bun B’s trill albums..now that joint was fiiiiiire

    33. I think lupe is used to being that beloved critically acclaimed artist in hip hop and now that hes not getting that
high praise that he got on his 2 albums it really getting to him. Lupe should not be so down about this cause not every
album is gonna be a classic, at some point in ur career ur gonna release that 1 mediocore or weak album ppl wont
generally like, it happens, just ask nas. Lupe just needs to take in as much of the wins as he can, take all the loses like
a man and move on to better things. He can always come back with another dope album that himself and his fans can
      be real happy with.

    34. I’m still going to buy the album and support Lupe, you can tell this is nt hes album, the sound has changed soo much from The Cool. Bt hey, lets support.. And hey im from the UK feel free to do The Cool album tour again.

    35. You hip hop “fans” are fucking disgusting.

If you ever want to know why good hip hop doesn’t get play, it’s because you fucks download shit, regardless of the quality or not. Then you live with it for a week, over analyse it, find every single thing you hate about it…RUN TO THE INTERNET and shit all over it.

Then you piss about why people like Waka Flaka gets so much attention. It takes him 10 minutes to write a whole album. He doesn’t give a shit if he’s downloaded, he can just write a whole new album and get money from the label.

but someone like Lupe takes a year to write a fuckin’ ablum. Then it takes him year(s) to convince a label to put it out. And then, when the date finally comes, you fucktards steal it from him! Then you go on and on about how “average” it is, even though it’s probably the best “lyrical” album released in months.

“Oh, I couldn’t listen to it all the way through without skipping some tracks so it’s just AVERAGE!”

      BITCH, FUCK YOU!

I came up in the era where you had to wait outside in line for the record store door to open before you got your copy of the new shit. And it was YOUR copy; your physical trophy. Even if your man’s dubbed it for you, you had to get your OWN copy.

And most classic albums back then weren’t PERFECT. They were just classic — totally different thing! I remember buying The Score and only listening to two or three songs. I was still DISCOVERING how dope that album was years later.

You fucks just want everything RIGHT NOW and you’re ruining hip hop. Not Wayne, not Drake, not Waka, not Lil’ Jon, no it’s you!

      1. Music is art. If you have the ability to make great art then make it so people can appreciate it. So it lives on for ages. Not to make money off of it. I’m for supporting hip hop. But you should base the music on money. Mos Def, Kweli, J-live don’t make shit for money but they don’t ever sell out even though they could. They just keep putting out music and doin them

      2. GET A LIFE BITCH WITH YOUR MINI BIBLE TEXT FAGGOT FUCK YOU AND FUCK YOUR FAV ARTIST YES I STILL DOWNLOAD AND WILL UPLOAD AHASHARE.COM BITCH AHAHAAHAHAHAH

      3. nikka i dont give a fuck how long u had to wait in line to cop your shit back in 70’s or whatever the fuck stone age you lived in ,in the words of kanye west ‘old folks talking back in my day but homie this my day” .If i like shit im go buy it of itunes in a sec if not im’a download that shit bitch get the with the program old skool nikka pop vicodin and oxy pills, smoke kush, fuck bad bitchez, and talk illuminati, and go hard in tha modafuckin paint nikka thats my age nikaa so FUCK YOU

      4. @youngn u stealing from artists and u know damn well that aint right! how would u like it if people stole ur shit and didnt support u at all, ur money and finances would be fucked if u was the artist on the other end! see thats the problem with u youngsters, aint got no respect for anything nor do u have integrity. U think ur entitled to whatever the fuck u want and u think u know everything went u dont know shit! If hip hop dies as a business and a genre dont u fucking cry, u got yourselves and your ass-backwards thinking to blame! Stupid young muthafuckas i swear smh

      5. Ima laugh when in a year or not even youngns pc gets robbed and im still chilling with my epic cd collection. Why the fuck would you even wanna claim this age as yours? Fuck that im not young but im def not old either..why would I wanna claim horrrrrible music flooding the scene, guys who seem to be coming bigger and bigger chicks, and little fucks wearing jeans so tight ur 2nd testicle cant even drop? Naw im good with that you keep your uhh “golden” age we got going on just dont smell it cus thats def not gold..ill keep my memories of skipping school to get stillmatic and the blueprint the day they dropped you keep your uh itunes its there until your pc gets a virus from the music you downloaded copy. Dont shake ur head at these kids shit i remember always hearing shit from older cats who rocked everything on tapes when we had cds thats all it is to me but now im the old fuck because when i pay for a cd id like to own it not just have it on itunes

      6. waah.sniffle.waah.While you’re having a breakdown Lu is going on a worldwide tour.Idiot.It’s 2011.Not 1993.Lu had a misstep.It happens.No reason for you to go on a e-rampage.lol

    36. If u feel disapponted with the music u should always tell ur favorite artist the truth. Give him constructive criticism but dont be a dick about it.

    37. Lyrics are still powerful as ever not slacking there at all. Good album all in all just some of the tracks are not what you expect from a hip hop artist. Lupe has a fan base he’s not a new artist theres no reason to change his style of music. Dam I see why alot of artist are going indie, these labels are fumbling the ball big time. They are trying to ruin this mans career because he wouldn’t sign that three sixty deal. Keep doing what you do and the real fans no your hand was forced, the Coolest the game needs you bad!!!

    38. i dont know what the fuck you guys are talking about. This album is one of the best albums in recent memory. Lupe’s first 3 singles are better then half of gay ass wayne’s shit. I don’t why you fags are up on waka flaka and hiccup mayne’s dick. Lupe’s whole album is firee. I don’t give two shuts whatever you guys are saying lupe’s on top right now and you Gus will realize this eventually.

    39. Hey stop ya complaining, this is what some of ya fought for, to make atlantic release the fucking album. So this album doesnt give u the sound or style that u wanted well then ya should of made it clear about what is it specifically ya wanted out this album sonically and content wise.

    40. Come on its Lupe…dat nigga shit always dope forreal! I kno imma cop it and its gonna be dope

    41. I’ve been wonder why Lupe would veer off from his lyrical appellations to spitting Nas verses throughout his tour year! This album is lyrically matic! Got the bootleg- but because of the aptitude and lyrical content like nasir but with his own flow- i pre ordered the album $13.99 on itunes. The first real album with substance this year. Sorry, Kweli, Lupe snatched that Jayz compliment from you on this album! If dude drops “Break the Chian” as a video – or on “Black on Black”, Lupe should go platinum! Really, ever track is HEAVY MENTAL – What do you coons know about that Killah Priest shit! I support only the real! –NOT A DECADENT SUPPORTER INSOLENCE! NAS ALBUM BETTER COME HARD THIS YEAR! DISTANT RELATIVES IS SICK FOR YOU IGNANT HAHA IGNORANT FOOLS!

    42. I love lu, but after hearing it……not impressed. Lie to me and tell me it’s even close to F&L or The Cool. I’m sorry I thought that after waiting 3 years for his next album that it would have more than 12 tracks, and it def lacks in production. Not hatin it’s just the way I see it. I hold a Very high standard because he deserves it. He just didn’t deliver on this one

      1. Its actually 14 tracks with 2 videos on itunes. Its a matured crisp lyrical content with MJ beats. Lyrically, its better because in all of these so called gangsta prankster rapper Lupe and Nas is not afriad to call out the President to all of the world problems while we can’t wipe our own ass at home! REAL SHIT! I DON’T KNOW NOBODY IN THE HOOD PARTYING LIKE THESE DIDDY TV RAP KOONS. EVERY OTHER PERSON ON THE BLOCK HAS MOVED OUT OF THEIR CRIB! REAL SHIT! Lupe and Nas is talking making the change out of this condition. Partying is cool but not why you got mouths to feed. So yes this album is a mature step up from “the Cool”.

      2. i completely agree with 620 hawk. It was not a bad album by many standards but to the standard i hold Lupe, it was shitty. Yeah, it has tracks which are politically stunning and i must admit he was brave to call out big wigs like obama and such on it..but less we forget..Lupe his been doing that his WHOLE career. One of the illest tracks off of F&L was ‘American Terrorist’ and one of my favorite quotes from him was from ‘Conflict Diamonds’ “FU## BUSH, BUT THERES PEOPLE ON THIS EARTH, DOING WORSE, AND THEY BLACK/ YEAH I TOOK IT THERE, NOW LET ME BRING IT BACK”. I dont know about anyone else, but i am not mad that he spoke about thought provoking topics. I am mad that he dumbed it down to do so. And as a Lupe fan i feel like he made a promise to us to NEVER dumb it down when he released that amazing track. When the last two albums or any mixtape inbetween came out i used to sit down with friends and break down his lyrics…I fear that i am going to have to wait for his next album to do that again. All in all..i still Love you LU..and i pray that this was the work of Atlantic and not you own. One day, you will be able to “break away from their chains” and release your own work and that thought or rather hope alone, is the reason I will purchase Lasers.

    43. I’m thinking that someone could remix Lupe’s verses into the greatest album of all time. His lyrics are unbelievable but are trapped within bad(mostly) hooks and pop production. Hello Danger Mouse. Please remix this asap!!!

    44. WHAT A LET DOWN LUPE WAS GONNA BUY BUT YOU SOLD OUT HOMIE SO DONT BE MAD YOU FUCKED UP AND BEND OVER TO THEM

    45. Okay this is bullsh*t! whats up with this “Hip Hop Is Dead” crap? There are STILL over hundreds of Hip Hop artist that are still making good music, but there all from the indie rap scene that doesn’t betray their fans by been more pop oriented.

C’mon out of 30 million people in this country you name rappers that are only in the mainstream? get the f*ck out!

Look I like and respect Lupe, but doing “Hip Hop is dead” sucking d*ck festival all day long isn’t gonna solve anything. If you want to resurrect Hip Hop then BUY INDEPENDENT MUSIC YOU IDIOT!

    46. Regardless, real fans will support Lu. The dude has put so much fight into what’s going on and works hard to make positive records that can change the world or worldly perspectives, but that doesn’t resonate with the “commerce” driven executives who could care less about the message in the music. They care about “The Minstrel Show”…see: Little Brother v. Atlantic; i.e. keeping people with the wool pulled over their eyes and in positions of debt. They want to keep everyone blind to the facts and moving like zombies. Lupe represents everything that’s good about art and he is compromised into putting out an album that his heart wasn’t in. He’s jaded now. The Cool was three and a half years ago! Who wouldn’t be?!?!

F*** IT. I’m buying two copies of #LASERS and not for Atlantic. Dude will continue to get my hard-earned money every time he comes to Dallas too.

“F*** CRITICS, YOU CAN KISS MY WHOLE A**HOLE, IF YOU DON’T LIKE MY LYRICS YOU CAN PRESS FAST FORWARD.” -Hov

    47. This is the best album I’ve heard since The Documentary in 05.. If you listen to lyrics then you’ll enjoy this album. Not only that but the sounds are unreal. Suck one to the haters and um not tip ridin anybody. Lupe= Greatest

      1. i agree with you bro. The lyrics are definitely on point. The beats are different but are modern and, imo, great. If you do listen to the lyrics, you will be reminded of F&L Lupe

      2. DOCUMENTARY IS A CLASSIC>LUPE DISCOGRAPHY

THIS ALBUM AINT ON THE DOC LEVEL NIGGA GET THE FUCK OUTTA HERE

    48. MAN I MISS THE DAYS WHEN ARTISTS HAD 100% CREATIVE CONTROL ON THEIR SHIT! ITS LIKE ALL DEM NEW RAPPERS LOSIN IT N LETTING THE MAN TELL THEM WAT TO DO N THE MESSED UP THING ABOUT IT, IS DAT DEY ALMOST GO NEVER GO PLAT!

N ITS ALL DEM GANGSTERS/DOPE DEALER ASS NIGGAZ WHO GOT CONTROL ON THEY SHIT, LIKE SERIOULSY NOBODY AFRAID OF LUPE

LOL WE NEED A NEW DEATH ROW AT LEAST THEY LET NIGGAZ DO WAT THEY WANT

FUCK ATLANTIC N JIVE BUNCH OF FUKING OLD ASS PEDOPHILES EXEC FUCK YOU!

      1. ahhah yeah they do needah Death Row type of label again cuzz they did look out for tha artist in terms of creative control and duin dirty work for cheap beats lol

      1. Man up! Read about Dr. King and the civil rights! A lot of his activist didn’t agree with his audacity. Including the out spoken Malcolm X, Panthers to Jesse Jackson that was in Dr King’s most inner circle. If its truth and real commend the dude for jumping in ocean of sharks. Its funny how people don’t talk about all of the whack commercial stuff. But, as soon as some spits sense – oh my god! The old saying is so true.

During the Holocaust, their is this “the last neighbor” in his corner house that just set back and watched the Nazis’ take down his neghbors. One by one – the family, mother’s and children all screamed for help. But the witnessed neighbor never helped until the Nazis kicked in his house. the last neighbor screamed, cried and pleaded for help – he thought if he just ignored the truth – that the reality wouldn’t come knocking at his door! That stupid man was tortured to death! But, before he was mutilated, he was forced to share his story as the Nazis made fun of him! So the Jews live by “NEVER AGAIN!” Don’t wait for reality to knock on your door before you take back you words.

    49. The songs I’ve heard are for the most part are pretty good. The beats are ill and it is definitely head-bobbing music. I think he went overboard with some of his lyrics though and at times tried to preach about topics without knowing all the detail. For example, Words I Never Said, brings up a lot of controversial political topics. One being Israel’s bombing of the ghaza strip, and how the the president, “didn’t say shit”. It is not like Israel bombed Palestine with out being instigated, and it is unfair of Lupe to talk poorly about the US without knowing all of the facts. In fact, he advocates people to withstain from voting because of “corruption” in the US.
A lot of Lupe’s fans take what he says literally and believe that he has incredible insight over everything. While messages of peace are fine, promoting it by not voting is a pretty awful.
I personally like all of Lupe’s albums a lot, I just think he went a little off track with LASERS. Still a great album though.

      1. STOP YOURSELF – PALESTINE HAS NO WEAPONS! THEY THROW ROCKS AT TANKS! NO REALLY – THEY THROW ROCKS AT TANKS. AL QEADA TRAVELS FROM AFGHAN, TO SAUDI ARABIA TO IRAQ AND PALESTINE. THEY ARE THE ONLY INSTIGATORS. VILLAINS WITHOUT A COUNTRY! PEOPLE JOIN THEM BECAUSE, AL QEADA IS A BUSINESS THAT EMPLOYS THE HOMELESS. SO, WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU COULD BECOME INFAMOUS AND FEED YOU FAMILY AND HAVE THEM MOVED TO ANOTHER COUNTRY.–THAT’S WHY SOME OF THEM BECOME TERRORIST. ISRAEL AND ISLAM IS A 1,000 FOOLISH WAR – ON WE WERE HERE FIRST EGO SHIT. –JUST LIVE -PERIOD! SO LUPE IS RIGHT – READ MORE KID!

      2. @vice
Dude, im partially against Israel but even i cant agree with you. Before you tell someone to read more get your facts straight. Refering to all Palestinians having no weapons is insulting for one….really? Do you even believe that the nation is so poor that only rocks are their defense/attack.
Considering how many Qassam rockets palestine fired into Israel, your rocks hypothesis is obviously wrong. Qassam rockets were fired almost daily into israel and were one of the main provocations of the conflict. Israel went overboard, agreed, but dont twist the facts to make it aid your argument.

    50. from one quick spin of it, I didn’t hate it. Some hooks were terrible like the punk influenced one – state run radio i think it was. But I think Ill probably find a bit to go back to. Has a very poppy feeling to it though unfortunately.

    51. I was really disappointed in myself for downloading the leak but even more upset at the album. I really thought I had downloaded the wrong thing. To me it just wasn’t Lupe… it was too mainstream

      1. yea me too, the album is too mainstream, but oh well he got pressured and stuff so nothing we can do about it, btw you look hot :)x

    52. FUCK ATLANTIC!
Lu has quality material here but you can tell where the label fucked it all up…hook are weak, some production is weak, fuck MDMA, and where is Matthew Santos, Lu and Santos always came hard.
Lu’s lyrics are still on point tho

    53. Wasn’t gonna d/l this album, but after hearing some awful things about it I did… goddamn!, what happened? I mean, I know the label pressured you but shit, you’d be better off leaving Atlanta and going indie. At least that way you’ll keep your dignity. Lasers is a POS that is DOA, I’m glad I didn’t spend money on it.

      1. he tried to get released from atlantic a while back. they didnt let him. the people wanted an album. im pretty sure he scraped all of his real stuff because it wasnt commercial enough, but damn now all i can do is wait for food and liquor II

    54. Oh, forgot to say: The lyrics were on point, but they were completely negated and rendered useless by the shitty, headache inducing pop-beats and horrible hooks. lol, industry suits have NO taste in music, I can’t imagine anyone listening to those tracks and being like “yeah, this shit’s hot!”.

    55. what doesnt make sense is they would let a relatively unknown lupe relase food and liqueur but make a big deal about lasers.. seems like a gimmick.. still a fan tho.. kinda gay but its cool cause people are stupid huh

    56. im so disappointed by this record. this should have been a great moment for hip-hop, but instead we are left hanging. dont get me wrong there are a few good tracks on here (all black everything is my favorite song right now), but this cd is not lupe and u can tell. i still want to support him because Lupe is the best, but this cd is a let down and i hope he can bounce back from this.

    57. …Man up! So the Jews live by “NEVER AGAIN!” Don’t wait for reality to knock on your door before you take back you words.

    58. I feel for Lupe I really do bc I know it was a real struggle for him to put his album out bc we his fans wanted it bc he’s just and incredible artist. At the same time tho the album isnt as great as Lupe’s potential. The album isnt trash but ppl just expected a classic album cuz he’s very much on his way to making one we just dont know when. I’ma still go out and buy the album cause even tho Im not too big on this cd, Im still and always will be a Lupe Fiasco fan just like I am with Nas and a few other artist….cause this is their lives we’re talkin about there only as good as they’re fans allow them to be…..so support em!

    59. my boy is a die hard lupe fan and he was so disappointed with this album. He said he threw it straight in the recycle bin and the permanently deleted it. That’s how I know it must be bad.

    60. Blame the label all you want, blame pop too, but the truth is, this dude makes nerdy music. And when he tries to kick knowledge it’s some real abc basic shit wrapped in bad production. Work on it duke.

    61. Hahahaha! fuck you lupe! you tried to sell out and your album is going to flop like a motherfucker! dx is already proclaiming that it sucks and it hasnt even dropped yet! fuck you for selling out thats what you get you cocksucker!

    62. Even though I enjoyed the album it just doesnt sound like a real lupe album. He needs to join kanye, mos, common, cudi and pusha at g.o.o.d music it should fix a lot

    63. LOL, Lupe flopped as usually. Look for this shit to barely even make the Top 200 billboard with 1,000 copies sold lol. Gucci Mane can sell 300 trillion copies in 1 hour. That’s how holy Gucci Christ is.

      It’s Gucci Time!

    64. I don’t know why anyone could dislike this album, really good bar like a few songs. it’s just hard for an artist like Lupe to top the hype.

    65. Class cd, he got pressured but hes still come out with some great tunes. You haters just dont like it because your not open to change. Forget about what you think Lupe should have come out with and just listen to the tracks. The majority of them are actually decent tunes and beats.

      1. I cant take u seriously because anybody who doesnt agree with you is automatically a hater. Even his fans constructively express how bad it is and u still call them haters. grow the fuck up.

    66. Yes I understand what you’re saying but if they were actually fans of his they would understand the pressure he was under from the label. Read a bit about it and you will see, it doesn’t mean he hasnt worked incredibly hard on the album and actually if you forget about what Lupe should be doing, the songs are actually decent its just most of his so called “fans” are too busy hating on the fact that he hasnt done what he usually does. This album may not be his best but actually it has some decent tracks considering the pressure he was under. I guarantee his next album will be be more “lupe” but this one is more mainstream and that doesnt automatically make it bad. How do you define a “fan.” A fan would see the problems lupe had trying to create an album he wanted and had to settle for these more mainstream tracks and a “fan” would understand that…

    67. This is what happens when you get extreme anticipation and your fans are hip hop heads. Thank god I didn’t anticipate this album, that’s why I enjoyed it. Oh yeah and I’m a hip hop head.

    68. I hada really bad feeling about ‘Lasers’ after all the delays, and especially after being underwhelmed by the singles. The fact that Lupe fanatics are dissing it is not encouraging at all.

was really looking forward to it too.

    69. lupe one of my favourite rappers and his old albums/mixtapes are wicked but this album is shit, even ‘go to sleep’ and ‘slr’ are better then the tracks that are on Lasers. Its cause of atlantic its a flop choosin them hooks/tunes. it does have some good tunes like all black everything. Waitin for food n liqour 2 now i know thats gonna b a lupe album and the best hes put out

      1. hiphop huh??? how can you say this album is shit??? all black everything alone is worth buying this album.

    70. Lasers is fuckin nuts. I was never much of a Lupe fan, but thank you Lupe. I love the album. Don’t let all of those critics get you down. They don’t know what the fuck theyre talking about.

      1. you were never a lupe fan, thats mean you coudnt understand his lyrics or havnt heard all his old albums/mixtapes, thats why you like this album because its a pop album it was made for people like you by atlantic, his next album hell be back to makin his best tracks

    71. I don’t see how anyone can say this album is trash. I’m really doubting you listened to it.

Skimmed through it. Maybe. Sat and listened. You couldn’t have.

When I first skimmed through it I was thinking it wasn’t that great. Now that I actually listened to it and sat with it. It’s a beast.

I really don’t believe you could have listened to All black everything, Words I never said, The show and say the album is trash. Add on the bonus tracks which were previously leaked. Shining Down and Beaming
and this album is ridiculous. He should have put SLR as a bonus track though.

    72. no the fans should have expected to be disappointed by it

still, buy lasers and lupe will release more music… better music!

    73. After all the BULLSHIT I has to read from Lupe his Stans in the comment section for months… I’m glad this dude got his ego checked. No hate…just sayin.

    74. I liked it…IMO i think he actually dumbed the album down for the “average” listener to enjoy.. he has a few radio-friendly songs on there even some they could get club play (thats rare for Lupe)but he still has those meaningful songs that im used to from him.Overall its a complete album and ppl should really pay attn to the message as opposed to jus melody!

    75. this album is not trash! tired of you backpacking so called real hiphop heads not being able to expand your mind and think outside the box!

      1. man, atlantic put him in a box u dumbass. the cool was ‘out of the box’. this album isnt groundbreaking at all.

    76. Just got the leak..I swear these dudes listen to my music..Lupe killing it so far Im at track three. Lupe spitten that shit mayne!

      soundclick.com/showtimeny

    77. Lupe just hold yah head and trod on through.

      Im copping this fa sho!

Im up to track 7 only track I aint like is track 4.. so far but he was still spitten fire..

    78. WHO FUCKING CARES SAIGON FIASCO, REAL LUPE WOULDVE PUT ON 4 NEW CDS BY NOW PLUS A SKATE DVD.

POSER, HE FOOLED YALL THINKIN ATLANTIC REALLY WAS A PROBLEM…just a shitty cd that needed more promotion.

BUT I HAVENT LEAKED IT YET SO IDN LOL

    79. Man it really pains me to admit this album isn’t very good at all. I’m a Lupe fan because of the type of music he made up until lasers. Just not my style. not digging it at all. The Cool, Daydream, Hip Hop Saved my life, Dumb it Down, American Terrorrist, etc. thats lupe. this new techno/hip hop/rock shit is wack. Lupe is a world class spitter. Thats what the music should be focused on. not weird pop beats and autotune. I’m just shocked right now. it kills me to say that this is a bad album. all you guys saying that the album is good are in denial. go back and listen to food and liquor and the cool then listen to lasers. tell me lasers isn’t the worst of the three by far. Man i’m just shocked right now. I didn’t think this was possible. I don’t even know who this guy is on Lasers. weird. Lu keep your head up though. Eminem dropped relapse before he dropped recovery. just stick to why the fans love you. for being the amazing lyricist you r. you don’t need all the pop shit. this is so disappointing.

      1. yes, i agree, i have much love for lupe and his previous work, but this album isn’t as good as i thought it would be

      2. man thanks for bringing that up dude. im an AVID lupe fan, but this album aint doin it for me. i waited 3 years damn it, i went to his concerts, i copped FL and the cool, but this album just seems like empty. Lupe admitted he fn hates it though. now all i can do is wait for F&L 2….

      3. It’s funny that you think this album is no good, but you like Recovery which is clearly Eminem’s poppiest album ever.

      4. lol. ok. there is no possible way you can listen to Lasers and honestly say that was a good album. i swear to god as a matter of fact. I’ve been playing it over and over to let it grow on me. it just gets worse and worse. I am one of those guys you thinks lupe is the GOAT. its not like i’m hating. just speaking from my heart. Its really bad. I hate the fact that i feel that way, but its true. follow me @giantsfan719. you got his dick so far down your throat your ears arent working right. that album is trash. I’d rather listen to a Salt n Pepa album.

    80. Lupe is a activist..he’s what hip-hop needs right now (a f!cking voice). If you dont like the album..why not keep it to yourself. Dont try to deter people from hearing his message because we as a people need some positive shit for inspiration..name a better mc. then look in the mirror and shoot the first thing you see. 412 stand up

    81. I think its funny that the same people who are the proclaimers of “real hip hop” are the ones who endorse Kanye West who makes backpack hip hop and hip pop. This album has the same hooks and whatnot of Big Boi, B.o.B, j.Cole, Fashawn, Kanye, Em, T.I. and whatnot. While it might not be something Nas or Talib would do Lupe is not one of them. I think an artist who can try these pop mannerisms but can maintain his lyricism is important or the radio will stay filled with shit. I think Atlantic had a lot of influence on the album yes, but Lupe was still able to get his message out. If Lasers does well hopefully F&L2 will be able to left untouched by Atlantic

    82. From what I have listen to so far has been amazing, I dont know anyone could call this album trash.

One of the few rappers, who actually talks about true life, and has some postive meaning behind it.

I used to listen to lil wayne/gucci but screw that shit, after I started listening to Lupes music there was no going back.

Out of the 7 songs I heard, theres only 1 which I didnt care for much. Most albums you buy have 2-3 good songs on it period.

    83. I’ve been a Lu fan since day one. I loved the mixtapes, F&L is my favorite album of all time, followed by The Cool. And Lasers is on point. Is it the same? No. But do artists not have the right to evolve and do and try different things? All of you people who claim you’ve been Lupe fans but don’t like this or disrespect it by calling it “shit”, are the haters. If you want your favorite artists to continue doing the same things album after album, go ride Wayne or Gucci’s ass, and get off of real musicians.

    84. Lasers by Lupe Fiasco and Atlantic Records:

It has about 4 great, dare I say, classic songs. The rest are just average.

It’s a damn shame what Atlantic turned this record into. I hope he goes indie or signs with Jay-Z or Kanye.

    85. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t expecting the type of production behind Lupe. But with that said, he was still spitting fire and had some deep topics he touched on. Is it my favorite Lupe joint? No. But is it dope? Yes. Show love and support the artist, the reason he had the production like that is because of YOU, the CONSUMER. SUPPORT MUSIC and stop BITCHING

    86. Haven’t heard the whole album yet but I liked The Show Goes On, All Black Everything and I loved Words I Never Said. The only song I don’t care for was I Don’t Wanna Care right now.

    87. Damnn, Atlantic Records —> Fuck You Fags!!
      FUCK YOU ATLANTIC RECORDS!!!!

Grrrrrr, I really hope that however the sales are for this album, that FOOD and LiQuOR 2 sells more copies when it drops late 2011/early 2012. Otherwise, I will lose any remaining bit of faith in the idea that consumers will eventually assign merit/props/accolades to the MC’s and albums that actually matter and are substantial or refreshing!!

I wonder when Atlantic (as well as Interscope, Virgin, and even Def Jam) will stop torturing people by selecting production beats that are recycled, mindless, primitive, corny, and fucking sound worse than nails on a chalkboard?????!!!!!!!

What was the point of Hov making “Death of Autotune”?!!! Apparently very few people heard this nigga and those that did didn’t care enough to help change things…

Stand your ground and don’t let em hammer you Lupe…

    88. I get what everybodys saying. Lupe whole career has been based on him putting songs out that nobody else will talk about. and he only did that in 2 songs and you can argue only one (words I never said) I still like the album though. Is it controversial No. does it have a message ya it does. But yea lupe dont let atlantic destroy food and liquor 2. Retire with this as your last album before you let them fck up that album

    89. I’ve been a Lupe fan from the get go, Food and Liquor was great and so was The Cool. I’ve seen him in concert, etc. And I’ve also downloaded this whole album even though I planned on buying it way before the fact. I don’t get all these comments from all these so called true hip hop fans basically slamming Lupe because of the commercial sounding beats. Since when did the beats matter. This whole argument about beats is why hip hop isn’t what it was in the past. Especially considering that the entire Lasers album had good lyrics and the same good message. Let’s focus on what matters and stop making a big fuss about stupid stuff. What matters when it comes to hip hop is the message and I feel like this album accomplishes just that.

    90. Lyrically even if this isn’t Lupe’s best he still is on top of any other rapper in the game. He still spittin fire. He jus needs a new company. Brought every album and I will buy lasers. Lupe lyrics are still dope
