Lupe Fiasco’s third album, Lasers, is scheduled for a March 8 release, but pirated copies have already made their way to the Internet, and Lupe says the negative reviews are “crushing.” In an effort to minimize piracy, Lupe and Atlantic have been releasing weekly singles since February 15. During the three weeks leading up to the album release, fans had the opportunity to essentially purchase half of the album via iTunes and also buy an iTunes Pass, which provided access to song snippets and exclusives.
“I never thought Lasers would inspire so much negativity,” Lupe wrote to his nearly 400,000 Twitter followers. “Reading the comments and reactions is crushing.”
Lupe faced similar piracy in 2006 with his Atlantic debut, Food & Liquor, however the album received mostly positive reviews. During the weeks and months leading up to the release of Lasers, Lupe spoke very candidly about the compromise reached between himself and Atlantic to keep the album from being shelved. After reacting to the initial reviews, Lupe also addressed the fans that protested on his behalf and drew attention to Lasers.

And now that slaughterhouse is with Shady sit on that opinion until The Great Escape and the next Slaughterhouse album come out. Joe puts more effort into his writing than a lot of good MC’s do.

The only reason the album is getting shitty reviews across the internet is because it’s a pop focused album that Atlantic focused so much attention on being radio-friendly and forgot about all of his true fans. I listened to F&L, The Cool and all the mixtapes. Lupe is top ten period. And I don’t see how there can be negative reviews for Lasers. Yes it’s not Lupe’s best album, you can thank Atlantic Records for that. However even on his worst day Lupe is pretty damn good. And that goes for his albums. Lasers is a 4/5 album, which is pretty low for Lupe but still-pretty damn good. And the good songs on here are REALLY good. Letting Go, Words I Never Said, Beautiful Lasers, Break The Chain and ALL BLACK EVERYTHING should all be in Lupe’s top 15 songs.

No, the album isn’t a classic, but it’s still has that Lupe message in it, it’s just harder to listen to because of all of the pop surrounding the album. It would have been incredible if Atlantic didn’t fuck it up. I still love Lupe, but this album wont get as much play as The Cool and F&L. Still gonna support him and buy it though.
And I also disagree with Lupe on the situation. He seems shocked that the album is getting bad reviews, meanwhile he was the first one to say he hated it. What did he expect? It was definitely a bad business choice to say you hate your album right before it is released. That going to majorly decrease sales.

This album was good, but overall I say his best was the Cool. . The Cool had more depth to it, and it was more personal. Lasers had 3 fillers on it, giving us 9 tough tracks. I blame Atlantic for the negativity that the album has and will recieve. . Keep doin ya thing Lupe!

Lyrically, its better because in all of these so called gangsta prankster rapper Lupe and Nas is not afriad to call out the President to all of the world problems while we can’t wipe our own ass at home! i completely agree with 620 hawk. It was not a bad album by many standards but to the standard i hold Lupe, it was shitty. Yeah, it has tracks which are politically stunning and i must admit he was brave to call out big wigs like obama and such on it..but less we forget..Lupe his been doing that his WHOLE career. One of the illest tracks off of F&L was ‘American Terrorist’ and one of my favorite quotes from him was from ‘Conflict Diamonds’ “FU## BUSH, BUT THERES PEOPLE ON THIS EARTH, DOING WORSE, AND THEY BLACK/ YEAH I TOOK IT THERE, NOW LET ME BRING IT BACK”. When the last two albums or any mixtape inbetween came out i used to sit down with friends and break down his lyrics…I fear that i am going to have to wait for his next album to do that again. All in all..i still Love you LU..and i pray that this was the work of Atlantic and not you own. One day, you will be able to “break away from their chains” and release your own work and that thought or rather hope alone, is the reason I will purchase Lasers.

The songs I’ve heard are for the most part are pretty good. The beats are ill and it is definitely head-bobbing music. I think he went overboard with some of his lyrics though and at times tried to preach about topics without knowing all the detail. For example, Words I Never Said, brings up a lot of controversial political topics. One being Israel’s bombing of the ghaza strip, and how the the president, “didn’t say shit”. It is not like Israel bombed Palestine with out being instigated, and it is unfair of Lupe to talk poorly about the US without knowing all of the facts. In fact, he advocates people to withstain from voting because of “corruption” in the US.
A lot of Lupe’s fans take what he says literally and believe that he has incredible insight over everything. While messages of peace are fine, promoting it by not voting is a pretty awful.
I personally like all of Lupe’s albums a lot, I just think he went a little off track with LASERS. Still a great album though.

I think its funny that the same people who are the proclaimers of “real hip hop” are the ones who endorse Kanye West who makes backpack hip hop and hip pop. Haven’t heard the whole album yet but I liked The Show Goes On, All Black Everything and I loved Words I Never Said. The only song I don’t care for was I Don’t Wanna Care right now.

Grrrrrr, I really hope that however the sales are for this album, that FOOD and LiQuOR 2 sells more copies when it drops late 2011/early 2012. Otherwise, I will lose any remaining bit of faith in the idea that consumers will eventually assign merit/props/accolades to the MC’s and albums that actually matter and are substantial or refreshing!!
I wonder when Atlantic (as well as Interscope, Virgin, and even Def Jam) will stop torturing people by selecting production beats that are recycled, mindless, primitive, corny, and fucking sound worse than nails on a chalkboard?????!!!!!!!

Lupe whole career has been based on him putting songs out that nobody else will talk about. and he only did that in 2 songs and you can argue only one (words I never said) I still like the album though. Is it controversial No. does it have a message ya it does. But yea lupe dont let atlantic destroy food and liquor 2. Retire with this as your last album before you let them fck up that album
I’ve been a Lupe fan from the get go, Food and Liquor was great and so was The Cool. I’ve seen him in concert, etc. And I’ve also downloaded this whole album even though I planned on buying it way before the fact. I don’t get all these comments from all these so called true hip hop fans basically slamming Lupe because of the commercial sounding beats. Since when did the beats matter. This whole argument about beats is why hip hop isn’t what it was in the past. Especially considering that the entire Lasers album had good lyrics and the same good message. Let’s focus on what matters and stop making a big fuss about stupid stuff. What matters when it comes to hip hop is the message and I feel like this album accomplishes just that.
Lyrically even if this isn’t Lupe’s best he still is on top of any other rapper in the game. He still spittin fire. He jus needs a new company. Brought every album and I will buy lasers. Lupe lyrics are still dope
He just needs to ditch Atlantic. Once he does that, he’ll be good.
