Kendrick Lamar’s “DAMN.” Certified Platinum

Kendrick Lamar’s critically acclaimed fourth studio album, DAMN., has been out less than a month, but is already certified platinum, according to a tweet from Interscope Records. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) deems an album platinum after it has sold over one million units. The 14-track project has topped the Billboard 200 charts for the past two weeks.

The Compton MC released the album on April 14 after a full week of anticipation. Many fans speculated K.Dot was dropping a new project on April 7 after he mentioned the date at the end of “The Heart Pt. 4,” but they were clearly crushed when it turned out to be simply another announcement.

With songs like “HUMBLE.,” the much-discussed “DUCKWORTH.” and album highlight “DNA.,” DAMN. was apparently exactly what the Hip Hop landscape was lacking, and now has the sales to prove it. Check out the tweet above and find DAMN. here.

    1. And K.Dot’s only competition is J.Cole, maybe Bad Azz one day bt now J.Cole…i think Cole is unbeatable on his story tellin, he sort o reminds me of Pac. clear and heartfelt.bt rite bout now da homie K.Dot is runnin things

      1. Nah. Kendrick has pulled away from Cole. He’s in a lane of his own. J. Cole is just a name. Kendrick actually has classic tracks. Don’t Kill My Vibe, Backseat Freestyle, MAAD City, Mortal Man, Blacker the Berry, i, Theses Walls, DNA, Element, Duckworth the list goes on and on. I don’t believe in 10-20 years people are going to remember any J. Cole songs, let alone be able to rap them in their entirety

        1. Lol that’s funny. U can’t be serious. Cole has numerous classic tracks. Get up, 2face, best friend, lights please, won’t be long, the autograph, farewell, love yours, too deep for the intro, lost ones, how high, man I can keep going

    2. Platinum is meaningless now. Kids just hit Spotify and play “top ten”. So whatever is popular gets played, and counts as record sales. I still just count physical sales. I’m not a fan of lil Wayne, but remember when he sold a million physichal records in a week? Or 50 cent sellin millions of get rich or die tryin?

The whole digital streams counting as sales is BS, because made people play music and don’t like it, it just plays on a playlist….

      1. And some people can remember when selling a million copies only meant you went gold. Stop trying to minimize these people’s accomplishments because selling shit to anybody in an atmosphere where everyone not only can hear your shit for free but can occupy it for free is not easy.

        1. lol dude u must really be in kendricks dick I think I’m “minimalizing his a accomplishments” lol. He’s a top rapper in 2017. I’m just saying, that I do not consider digital streams to be sales. I stream music I dislike all the time. I purchase albums I like. If an album is really good, people will buy hard copies. If not, they ll stream it, and not bother.

And FYI, streaming an album isn’t hearing it for free. They make millions off of advertisements. Just like artists videos on YouTube isn’t considered “free” streaming. It’s beneficial to both parties. The host makes money, the artis and their label, and the user gets to listen without spending money, but watching advertisements. It’s not “free”.

        2. And dude your seriously responding to everyone here that thinks digital streams should count as sales lol.

I’m a huge kendrick fan, but your a kendrick STAN. Kendrick stans and Eminem stans are one in the same…. they could shit on a track literally, and you’ll say it’s a masterpiece. And I love both of em, but I dont dick ride them.

      2. Streams shouldn’t count as sales because it has more in common with radioplay than actual sale. Hell, even TDE boss said that tpab wouldn’t be considered platinum in his books until it actually sold 1mill hard copies. Either way I’m glad the DAMN. is doing well because it’s a great album

    3. Big win for the culture! Let’s continue to support that quality Hip hop y’all… If you reading this do yourself a favor an check out The Underachievers… Be Healthy

    4. Correct me if I’m wrong but I thought the album sold 600 000 1st week and 200 000 2nd week(Physical Copies,Streams and everything) how has it gone platinum if it hasn’t sold a milli yet? Do they mean it has sold another 200 000 already? Why isn’t it confirmed by the RIAA?

      1. You are correct, according to the Wikipedia the album has sold a total of 841 000 till date.

      2. Streams count as much as physical copies do now. I don’t know why people can’t accept this. Once upon a time, a gold record was a million copies sold and platinum was 2 million. Things change. Streams are probably more important than physical sales, but people keep going by the old standard.

          1. used to be a million for gold back in the 70s, which makes sense if you remember that the standard then was big ass vinyl records. Just saying that things change, and these guys should be held to the standard that the climate today is. Everybody can get every song released now for free, so selling anything at all (physical or otherwise) or to have that many people want to pay to stream your shit is to be commended.

    5. Think this was just some fake news by Kendrick ‘s parent label to peak interest and boost album sales.

    6. Bottom line 6god did 1.2 milli first week Views people then another 500k first week with More Life stop the debate Drake is 1 period!

      1. You’re on period. 6 god did nothing, because he is now 6 god, maybe pop god? Take it or leave it.

      2. Drake is a pop star. Kendrick is hip hop. Two diff lanes, why even compare? That’s like talking ab Frank Ocean outselling Florida Georgia Line.
