Jermaine Dupri Tells Lil Nas X “You Can’t Sit With Us”

Jermaine Dupri isn’t afraid to speak his mind, which he recently made clear with his controversial “strippers rapping” comment.  Now, the So So Def powerhouse is coming for Lil Nas X, who recently beat Mariah Carey’s Billboard record for longest-running No. 1 hit with “Old Town Road.”

On Wednesday morning (August 7), Dupri defended Carey’s legacy while ostracizing the 20-year-old breakout star.

“No!! You can’t sit with us,” he wrote. “go sit over there and based on the stats and this chart, @mariahcarey is the greatest song writer in history.”

Lil Nas X initially dropped “Old Town Road” independently last December. But over the past few months, the song has exploded in popularity thanks to the power of social media.

The track has been remixed four times with a wide array of artists contributing to various incarnations, including country superstar Billy Ray Cyrus, Diplo and Young Thug.

“Old Town Road” surpassed the previous record of 16 weeks at No. 1 set by Carey’s “One Sweet Day” featuring Boyz II Men and Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s “Despacito” with Justin Bieber.

After Lil Nas X beat Carey’s record, the Grammy Award-winning singer playfully passed the torch to her blossoming successor.

“Sending love & congrats to @lilnasx on breaking one of the longest running records in music history!” she wrote. “We’ve been blessed to hold this record with a song that means a great deal to @BoyzIIMen and myself and has touched so many. Keep living your best life!”

Dupri has collaborated with Carey numerous times, beginning in 1995 with the chart-topping single “Always Be My Baby.”

    1. Salty af. Let the kid live, he didn’t choose to beat your song. Not his fault music is so trash right now that he reigns supreme. Throw the shade somewhere else

    2. Like JD has any credibility in hip hop anymore… GTFOH….That would be like Vanilla Ice telling MGK that his rap card is being pulled due to not dancing while performing in shiny gold parachute pants.

      1. Jermaine dupri will always have credibility in hip hop. He’s a legend and a pioneer and in hip hop you respect the legends.

        1. He’s a pioneers for child rappers and singers of the 90s but that’s it.. He’s not a legend….Dr Dre is a legend,Timbaland and Havoc are legends… Jermaine Dupree is a washed up faux producer/rapper wannabe that wore out his welcome decades. He’s still bitter about Mariah Carey dropped him as a talent manager in August 2014. Name one thing that he’s bcontribution to hip hop since 2004?

          1. Bro, you not making sense. You don’t produce records for multiple platinum artists over a 20yr span if you aren’t talented. This is a silly statement. That man never has to produce another record again in his life. Unless you are Dr. DRE, there is nothing anybody can say about Dupri

            1. Ok next you will tell me that P Diddy is the greatest producer/rapper of all time. Face it…. since 2005 he hasn’t done shit…. accept it and move on

            2. Bro, the dude never has to produce another record in his life, period. Plus, he was fucking Janet Jackson! LOL You can make all the ignorant ass “What has he done that is relevant” arguments you want, they would fall on deaf ears because his career eclipses anybody you can mention not named Dre, Timberland, or Premier. He “hasn’t done shit” because he is reaping the benefits of a job well done. He don’t have to produce another record again, ever. It ain’t like he on Scott Storch status and he’s broke trying to get someone to give him a shot on their album. Dude is paid, legitimate musical royalty.

      2. You hold the torch for stupidity by using Vanilla ice and MGK as a comparison. Man did you even graduate from middle school at least??

    3. Mariah Carey is talented but I wouldn’t call her the greatest songwriter when half her hits are cover songs.

      1. yep, she wrote most of her songs. congrats to Lil Nas X for the record but we live in a day and age where the quality of music is so low, it doesn’t even matter

    4. Not sure why he is fussing. Let the kid have his shine. That being said, you can’t disrespect JDs legacy, and anyone trying to do otherwise is foolish.
      Cam’Ron
      Jay-Z
      Da Brat
      Lil Kim
      Usher
      Alicia Keys
      Monica
      Mariah Carey
      Janet Jackson

JD produced gold & platinum hits with all of them.
Pretending like he is irrelevant is stupid
He never has to make another record in his life, ever!

      1. Why is he even worried all kinds of records get broken. I like the song and I am 64 and heard all their songs. A different generation be happy for him you sound bitter

    5. He’s the Original Irv Gotti…The producer who had a small amount of hits but has been washed up since the early 1990s and 2000s

        1. Washed up…. Jay wrote Money Ain’t A Thang…He was just Mariah’s Talent agent until 2014 and he was Executive Producer to Captain Herpes Confessions… What had he done since 2005.

    6. They wrote de headline like dupri literally told lil nas “you can’t sit with us” cos ur gay

    7. Guess y’all all must be preteens looking to get signed by JD… the way y’all hug his nuts so much

    8. Another bitter old head clout chasing but y’all judge the young generation for doing the same shit… Be consistent Jermaine is a legend but a bitter out of touch one

    9. In my opinion, country and hip hop fans don’t like him. His song was taken off the country charts. I think lil(means no talent) nas(there is only one nas)x is a one hit wonder. This garbage hit is so big, he’ll never beat it.

    10. Didn’t this guy play with Little boys booty hole that he produced in the 90’s? Sounds like you just mad cause you didn’t get 1st Dibs and Lil Nas X Booty Hole!!!! Lmfao!!! But I Love ya Music J.D. So so Def for Life????????

    11. 1. I’m glad I read to see this man said he wasn’t talking about X but those who disrespect. 2. At least we know it’s HIM posting into HIS account unlike the “plants” here. 3. If folks knew what the song was about @ 1ST it wouldn’t have been No.1 which means you had to lead people on for months to get one hit. It’s fraudulent but y’all think hip hop winning tho. It’s the musical equivalent of being sexually catfished.

    12. Y’all sound dumb. Why would JD hate on a young artist? He actually danced for Whodini at the Freshest in 84 as a little kid (that’s a 35 year hip hop career), Help put Atlanta on the map in production, produced the first plantinum female rapper + TLC and the longest number ones any genre. People thought this other kid just flipped country music; got the babies singing it and 12 weeks later it turned out to be totally sexual. It ain’t hate cause older cats refuse to entertain bullshit. By the looks of it y’all either like being lied to or these some fake accounts.

    13. He may be a whole legend. If Mariah Carey herself congratulated Lil Nas X who the hell is Jermaine Dupri to be such a ass wipe. We don’t need Lil Nas X to push an agenda. The LGBTQ community is worldwide with resources that the back community can only dream off. While our blacks are continually killing each other, the LGBTQ is monopolizing, growing, building, teaching and owning!!

      1. Exactly what people be talking about how about you guys killing yourself just because someone found you out so go there about blacks killing blacks and y’all wonder why some of you get messed with it’s comments like that but you guys want to be taken seriously when you take every debate about something else you hijack it and make it about your community

    14. You can’t compare streaming numbers with physical sales no matter how you try and justify it. Streams need their own category. End of story

      1. agreed. that has changed everything. if you can listen to a drake song like 1200 times its equal to album sale. thats not right.

        1. Yup, stupidist shit. I hate seeing how the new kids sell like 200 000 and only like 30k is pure. Peoples albums can actually flop but hey if they have a hot single on spotify there album still goes gold or platinum

    15. If your a black man hating on another black man you should kill yourself so that’s JD and everybody else hating on Lil nas x IDC if he’s gay or if this ain’t hip hop or if streams won him this record IDC about none if that. I’m happy my BROTHER is doing his thing. Stay strong cause like every other black man they gonna try and bring you down

    16. all of these new records are based on technology and really dont equate to the way music was consumed prior. its not the same quality of music, its not being consumed the same way either. this was mariah carey and jermaine dupri’s 50-leven hit. no the lil dude gotta a long way to go.

      1. One sweet day would be on top 50 weeks
If they had all these streaming platforms to account for record sales

    17. Look we all know the way music stats work today are nonsense and basically made to keep the “industry” afloat in a sea of mediocrity…however, JD acting like One Sweet Day was all Mariah. How you gonna ignore Boyz II Men’s influence on that? That was no “Mariah” record, that was a massively hyped up collaboration between the top tier of RnB at the time. I understand to an extent but JD lookin salty here. With that said Old Town Road ain’t got shit on One Sweet Day

    18. That’s right intelligent Mariah Carey show your love. You don’t need no back up your talent and gift speaks for itself real talk. A Hamden Connecticut born and raised typing. A what about CT that get overlooked in the music industry. Connecticut is a smart state with history. The size of a state means nothing. I will say it again keep on rocking Mariah Carey.
