Fans of Jay Electronica finally had their dreams fulfilled when he dropped his long awaited debut album, A Written Testimony, last week. The 10-track project boasts heavy contributions from Roc Nation boss JAY-Z as well as Travis Scott and The-Dream.
But Joe Budden, who’s built a career around giving his opinion, evidently feels Hov’s omnipresence steals the show and had no problem saying so on Twitter.
“I never got absolutely mopped around on my own project either…” Budden tweeted in response to a GIF stating Budden has never had a classic. “@ me, not Rory,” a reference to his Joe Budden Podcast co-star.
Electronica replied, “i never heard your albums bro. may Allah bless your career as a journalist,” to which Budden said, “I took you off yours & it’s a Hov mixtape now…Peace be unto you as well King.”
Electronica added, “make sure yall give me my credit for lighting up that next podcast episode too. #DrakeIsMySpiritAnimal.”

Nowadays, and even like 15 years ago, cats were using social media to promote their stuff and get things rolling in order to get signed. These cats were hungry. Jay just dropping this album now? This tells me he wasnt hungry. Just listen to Exhibit A where he says that Puff was on him about getting the album together and out to the public. What the heck was he waiting for. Now it’s out and its sounds so boring with no energy. The production puts you to sleep and yeah agree that Jay is on every track almost which is cool but c’mon man this is your debut, you gotta have minimal guests on there with like no intros and outros and interludes man. Album isn’t trash but it could have been much more than what it is production wise and overall energy wise bru.

Here’s an idea…. If you don’t want people to be so critical about your work, don’t wait 10 years to drop it? Same goes for Dr Dre… They say he is a perfectionist (last album was far from perfect), so Dre doesn’t drop music for decades at a time… Which in turn makes us all heavily critical of the little music we do get from him. If Dre dropped an album ever 4 years, we’d have quadruple the projects, and some wouldn’t be great (like Compton or Dr Dre Presents The Aftermath), then others would be amazing, like both Chronic
As is Dre is a producer first, we’ve heard him many times w/o him having an album. His presence is still felt as a producer for others.
Joe was absolutely right in his assessment of the album. This should not have been Jay Elect debut album, especially after having fans wait for a decade. I personally wanted to hear more from him but the only thing I learned about Jay Elect from this album is that he follows the Nation of Islam. Jay did wash him on every track. Production could have been better. After 1 listen, there was nothing there that compelled me to go back and listen.

It’s true that Jay-Z’s bars hit harder than J Elec’s on his own debut. The competitive nature of the hip hop game requires you to be on your jock when featuring artists on your projects so he’ll have to take the L for that. But, by that same token Joe Budden and his fellow critics must remember that Jay-Z’s a legend so that shouldn’t come as a surprise. This is only his debut so the only way he can move is up. On another note stop with smack you talking about Eryka Badu. Keep it to hip hop. That kinda talk only shows us your mother ruined you.

You’ve got some good points there, but where I’ll disagree is that JE could have easily outshines Jay, IF he had the same style he had a decade ago. It’s like the album Watch The Throne. Obviously Jay is a better rapper than Kanye, but he didn’t show Kanye up, because Ye still made catchy, enjoyable contributions. It didn’t feel like just a Jayz album. This did.
