After debuting the song “Hotel Lobby” under their new moniker Unc & Phew back in May, Quavo and Takeoff announced in September that their new album would drop on October 7.
“We most definitely hollered at Raekwon,” Quavo told the outlet while descending the escalator at Los Angeles International Airport. “It was all love. We gave him respect. We told him it would be an honor, and we’re dropping this album called Only Built For Infinity Links, and it’s inspired by y’all.”
He continued: “So we just wanted to let you know we respect the OG’s and we most definitely love Wu-Tang, got respect for Wu-Tang, but right now this is what it’s about.”
He also said the project will be “the greatest album of all time.”
Takeoff and Quavo revealed the project’s tracklist on September 8. Clocking in at 21 songs, Only Built For Infinity Links will be a star-studded affair, with features from the currently incarceratedYoung Thug and Gunna, as well as NBA YoungBoy, Gucci Mane, Birdman, Mustard and Summer Walker.
“Hotel Lobby” – which has already gone gold and was accompanied by a Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas-inspired video over the summer – is included on the tracklist, as well as the Birdman-assisted “Big Stunna.”
The project will unfortunately not feature The Chef, despite him having linked up with Offset and Quavo to smoke some weed back in August.
The duo’s former Migos colleague Offset will also be dropping his own solo album on November 11. It’s unclear whether the trio had a falling out or not, but Quavo recently told GQ that he and his nephew just wanted to do their own thing.
“It was all about Migos, Migos, Migos. The three of us,” he said, speaking about the beginning of the group’s careers. “I feel like every group member has to establish themselves. Their own body of work. If not, you start losing members.”
Raekwon’s OB4CL cracked the top five on the Billboard 200 when it dropped in 1995 and helped usher in the mid-’90s mafioso rap movement. The album, which spawned an equally as beloved sequel in 2009, went platinum last February. Raekwon has long teased a third entry in the series but told HipHopDX last November that fans are going to have to be patient and wait.
“Right now, I’m going to give you another project before we actually give you the III,” he said at the time. “Because the III, we’re still curating that to make it strong. But being that time is really moving, I already have something else on deck that’s going to open up the vessel for Cuban Linx III to come out down the line. So, just get ready though.”
