New York drill has acquired critics over the years thanks to the violent nature of some of the biggest tracks from the genre. Since the genre blew up, violence in New York City has skyrocketed, causing law enforcement and politicians to point the finger at the buzzing NY sound. Many feel the genre won’t last long, such as Joe Budden.
During one of the most recent episodes on his famous podcast, Budden revealed that he thinks New York drill’s improbable run will be over in the next few years. The sound has already brought on too much attention from law enforcement, and some officials are already trying to get rid of it altogether, such as Mayor Eric Adams proclaimed back in February.
“You drill n-ggas got the shortest of windows,” Budden said. “That shit bout over. Y’all can go keep dancing with Eric Adams if you want. It’s over, buddy, in the next five, six years.”
He continued, “The writing is on the wall, and that’s government-issued writing. That’s not Joe. That’s government-issued writing. Don’t start hitting me, mad at me. I’m just telling you what I’m looking at.”
Joe Budden’s prediction may not be too far-fetched. Various rappers from the NY drill scene have had run-ins with police or even been arrested, such as Kay Flock and Dougie B. Others lost their lives, such as CHII WVTTZ and Tdott Woo, with their untimely deaths not helping the situation.
Mayor Eric Adams was hellbent on putting an end to the New York drill music scene. However, Fivio Foreign, Maino and other rappers from the city reached out and met with the politician to figure out a way to bring peace without getting rid of the burgeoning sound.
Man I must be getting old! Other than Joe Budden & Maino, I’ve never even heard of any of the artists mentioned in this article – let alone heard their music.
*proceeds to put on headphones and pull out a stack of CDs by Nas, Wu-Tang Clan, Redman, Blackalicious and the Coup.
Please upgrade some of your listening. There are sooopoo many dope artists doing their thing who are under 35.
Hip hop is almost a dead genre these days, in fact the only ones that stay relevant make tramp pop music about their vaginas. Any real hip hop head is gunna tell you that nobody memorable has come out in a long time( XXX and 070 shake being a couple of the exceptions to the rule) because the industry prefers money over talent and integrity, the good rappers have to struggle to get noticed because straight up hip hop has been alienated in it’s own genre in favor of money, don’t even get me started on how much they glorify drug USE and gang violence as opposed to back in the days when they shared cautionary tales and made something better out of it. The industry loves all of their drug addicts and it’s even happier when they die cause not only is their profit going to go way up but they also got to use another black man to keep you simple and hooked on drugs and material items and now he’s out of the way for the next one!
Drill Rap is dead or dying as it is already with the artist themselves being killed off or incarcerated. Self destruction is inevitable.
not the biggest fan of budden and his addiction to being an old salty bitch but dude is probably right about this one. shit ain’t gonna last or age well
You wankclowns, we figured this out HOW LONG AGO?
Violence went up in the city and the music MIRRORED what is happening there.
It isn’t the other way around.
Additionally, BUDDEN a dusty toxic old pedo who wishes he was popular.
Drill adds nothing to the culture. We don’t need to add more violence.
That shit is done after this year. No way anybody wants to hear the same garbage flows over and over. All the lyrics are whack and the videos are sausage fests.
Doesn’t take a genius. NYC Drill is just another sorta hip hop fad genre like frat rap and, although not completely dead, emo rap. When you consider that emo rap kinda came and went because of the drug related deaths that killed off some of the popping artists such as Peep and Juice WRLD (Triple X being an exception since he died by murder) and how others went for a more generally accessible sound, then it isn’t a stretch to believe that a subgenre that fuels genuine beefs which’ll usually lead to murders or long sentences is also here today, gone tomorrow. Hopefully this takes a final bow before 2025, if anything… I don’t know if I can be too excited for the next short lifespan thing that rap has to offer at this point, honestly.
This the same guy that said Chance the Rapper was being positioned to be the number one rapper for 15 years in 2018.
He would know, his music didn’t last more than 1 year.
You can’t be that dumb.
HE’S NOT KIDDING. ONLY STINK BREFF NERDS WERE CHECKING FOR JOE AFTER HIS DEF JAM DAYS.
How TF do you screw up spelling the word “breathe” with autocorrect enabled lol. You’re a special type of dumb.
Mwhahaha, good joke, drill is forever beach.
