Kanye West took a break from berating Kim Kardashian’s new boyfriend Pete Davidson on social media to attend Super Bowl LVI on Sunday night (February 13). Sandwiched between Donda Sports president Antonio Brown and his daughter North West, the eccentric Hip Hop mogul sat in his seat wearing a full-faced black mask, totally obscuring his face.

But according to film director Judd Apatow — who’s behind movies such as Anchorman: The Legend Of Ron Burgundy, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Superbad and Anchorman 2 (in which Kanye has a cameo),there was an inner battle going on in Ye’s head the entire time. As Apatow explained in an Instagram post, “I’m sitting near Kanye. He seems very hot and sweaty in the mask. I overheard him say, ‘Man, I wish I didn’t go with the mask today, but now that I’m in it I can’t really bail on it. Do you think I could lose it at half time? Seems like a logical place to make a change.’

“His friend said, ‘No, you have to commit.’ Then Kanye said, ‘I wish we would have cut some more vents in this thing.’ Then his pal said, ‘I told you to go with the creepy contact lenses but you didn’t listen. You never listen.’ Go Rams!'”

In the next slide, Apatow shared a photo of Kanye after he’d finally surrendered to the mask and wrote, “I got too hot. I can’t do it.”

Now, obviously Apatow is a funny guy — he’s not really famous for his period piece dramas or cerebralized documentaries. So whether Apatow completely invented the mask scenario nobody really knows for sure. But the jokes surrounding Kanye West’s mask were already flying on social media anyway.

“No way Kanye West spent $50K for a Super Bowl ticket to watch it like this” was a popular one on Twitter. Another observer came to the conclusion he was only wearing the mask because he “couldn’t stop crying.”

Kanye has been struggling with his divorce from Kim Kardashian, especially since she’s already moved on with Pete Davidson. He spent the majority of the weekend laying into the Saturday Night Live actor, making it painfully clear just how heartbroken he is over the dissolution of his marriage. During his Instagram blitz, he renamed Davidson “Skete” and claimed he once had a romance with former First Lady Hillary Clinton.

He then vowed to never allow Davidson to meet the four children he shares with his estranged wife. In another all-caps Instagram post, Ye shared a photo of Machine Gun Kelly with his pants down as he pours popcorn into Davidson’s mouth (who also has his pants down). He accompanied the photo with a text from Davidson that read in part, “I’d never get in the way of your children. That’s a promise. How you guys go about raising your kids is your business and not mine. I do hope one day I can meet them and we can all be friends.”

Ye captioned the post, “NO YOU WILL NEVER MEET MY CHILDREN.” While Kanye was busy at the game, Kardashian was in New York City on a Valentine’s Day with her new beau, a pretty solid indicator her marriage is over.
