Houston, TX

Bun B used his platform to expose racism in the Houston Police Department and received a response from HPD for doing so. In an interview with TMZ, the UGK MC detailed what he’s learned from the department after putting one former cop and two current officers on blast for a racist Facebook post.

“The officer that originally posted this resigned about a week before this post went up,” he explained. “So, he was no longer a member of HPD when this post went up. But the other two officers, who are in the comment section, are still active Houston Police Department officers right now. They work out of the Westside Command Station in Houston.”

He added, “I’ve been told by the assistant police chief, deputy police chief, that they’re gonna be dealing with this expeditiously.”

Bun called attention last week to a racist post that was made by former HPD officer David Nguyen on June 26. While Nguyen is no longer part of the force, two other officers liked and commented on it via Facebook.

“Ok Officers #TeeTruong #VuongVu and #DavidNguyen…you think it’s funny comparing black people to monkeys?” Bun wrote on Instagram. “We know you work in Houston at the Westside Command Station. Let’s see what your commanders think about this. And the other Asians on this group chat in the comments? Keep that same energy. No apologies will do. Black people are tired being treated like animals!”

Art Acevedo, Houston’s Chief of Police, issued a statement saying the department was aware of the racist post on June 30. At the time, he noted an internal investigation was initiated to determine if any current officers were involved.

The incident highlighted by Bun wasn’t the only example of Houston police’s racism playing out on social media in June. A few weeks ago, another officer named Robert Clasen retired prior to a disciplinary review hearing for offensive online remarks he made about Black people.
