HipHopDX Premiere

Denver-based rapper TheyCallMeAP — or AP for short — recently dropped off his new album WINS and now, the Montbello force of nature is back with a video for “Saturday.” Throughout the track, AP details a raucous weekend in the Mile High City.

Armed with colorful balloons and enough swag to fill a swimming pool, the video simultaneously pays tribute to the classic ’90s film Friday starring Ice Cube and Chris Tucker. In this case, AP and fellow Denver rapper Trev Rich swap roles with the iconic duo.

AP held an exclusive release party last month at an undisclosed location. The price of a ticket ranged from $50 to $100. Why? It was his response to a music industry that fails to pay artists what they’re worth, streaming revenue amounts to less than a cent per listen and venues get paid before artists at concerts.

Despite the high ticket price, the show sold out, a testament to his loyal fanbase.

“I love this project because it felt like my alter ego finally getting to speak over my more humble side,” he tells HipHopDX. “It felt as if I was taking something I knew I deserved rather than asking for it or hoping to prove something to everybody. Before, it was like, ‘I hope they like this.’ This time it was more like, ‘This is how I’m comin.’ Either they gone fuck wit me or not.”

One of AP’s next shows is May 15 at Englewood, Colorado’s Gothic Theatre. Tickets range from $30-$35.
