Since the devastating Hurrcane Katrina tore apart New Orleans and much of the southern coast, Ray Nagin refused to just be another forgotten citizen in this country. As the Mayor of New Orleans, Nagin surprised many by verbally attacking President Bush’s plans for evacuation and the government assistance the region was forced to do without.
Nagin told the Associated Press, “This is a great day for the city of New Orleans. This election is over, and it’s time for this community to start the healing process.”
Nagin himself, was the focus of the election based on his comments on New Orleans being a “Chocolate City”, frankly discussing race for the first time in decades by a political figure. His views most likely divided outside voters as much as it divided his own followers.
”You’re not going to get a typical Ray Nagin speech. I’m not going to get into trouble tonight, trust me, it’s time for us to stop the bickering. It’s time for us to stop measuring things in black and white and yellow and Asian. It’s time for us to be one New Orleans,”Nagin also said.

Nagin is said to be working with President Bush now to alleviate pressure on the region and bring millions of dollars in revenue back to the city, for levees and the rebuilding process.
“It’s time for a real partnership” Nagin said, “It’s time for us to get together and rebuild this city.
His second term will start May 31, a day before the hurricane season.
