Chicago, IL

Chance The Rapper and Common are being honored with murals depicting each of the rappers, according to The Columbia Chronicle.

The paintings by Chris Devins are featured in the Chatham section of the South Side of Chicago and are part of the “Chatham 2.0” public arts project.

“I’m looking to counter the constant negative imagery put out by the corporate media,” Devins says of his work.

Devins started the paintings in April 2015 and after it was determined that the section of the city needed positive images in order to help spur job creation, among other things.

“The perception outside of the community—and even within the community—is that nothing good is going on,” says Eiran Feldman, principal of First InSite Realty, which commissioned Devins to create positive art for and in the community. “What we wanted to do was put these images out there of role models from the community who have gone outside the community to do good things.”
