Kevin Gates has been rather successful over the past few years and made a name for himself beyond his home state.

Recently speaking with FM.TV, the Baton Rouge, Louisiana native remembered when he first started rapping and says it wasn’t the most professional of ways.

“When I started raping, I think I was in middle when I wrote my first rap,” he explained. “I had a little machine I used to record at the house; it was raggedy, it was bullshit. I started recording myself on a computer at my grandmother’s house. After that, I started going to a regular studio.”

Gates also wasn’t shy and went a little braggadocio about why he’s necessary for the rap game.

“I started taking music when I saw the way my fans were responding to me and that’s when I decided, ‘You know what? I want to be appreciated in my entirety. Kevin Gates makes great music. Kevin Gates is a great person, a great thinker, a great everything,'” he said.

Kevin Gates recently pushed back his forthcoming albumIslah to January 29. He also re-released his popular song “2 Phones” earlier this month.
