De La Soul has raised over $500,000 to go towards its upcoming studio album, And The Anonymous Nobody. With just three days left to go on their Kickstarter campaign, the trio [Dave, Pos, Maceo] has already exceeded its original goal of $110,000.
In a recent interview with VladTV, Dave, Pos, and Maceo spoke about the backlash they’ve received since starting the Kickstarter campaign.
“It’s not about being broke or anything like that, we’re not out here begging,” Dave tells Vlad. “We’re giving the opportunity for the fans who want to be involved in this record, fund this record and have us put it out. We’ve worked on this record for some time now. Of course, we’ve had to fund it ourselves to do some things. We’re not going to be on a Koch or a major record label, we don’t want to do that anymore, that’s slavery.”
De La explains within their 14-minute interview that the initial goal was actually lowered to $110,000 and that its been a blessing to see their fans support. The group hopes other artists will follow-through, instead of relying on labels to fund everything.

“Hopefully, what we’re doing and the success of what we’re doing it will definitely resonate with others and they’ll be able to do the same,” Maseo says. “This is the new way of doing business, actually the labels are trying to figure out this system.”
“Beyoncé don’t go in her pocket and make an album,” Pos interjects.
