Hip Hop Album Sales: Week Ending 06/29/2014

This week on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart, G-Eazy arrives at #3 with These Things Happen. Meanwhile Linkin Park’s The Hunting Party falls to #9 and Ab-Soul’s These Days… arrives just outside of the Top 10.

G-Eazy’s These Things Happen Arrives At #3

G-Eazy, a rapper who was raised in Oakland, California and moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, is #3 on the chart with These Things Happen. The album sold 46,091 units in its first week of availability, placing it just behind new albums by Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith. Earlier this year, G-Eazy spoke with The Source about the These Things Happen. “It was really a reaction to this crazy lifestyle we are living right now,” he said. “Being on the road almost all year and every night you sell out a show its kind of a mind fuck in itself. It’s like You work for something for so long so when it finally starts to happen your reaction is kinda crazy. You know, we would have these wild nights on tour then you would wake up the next morning like, ‘Fuck, these things happen.'”

Linkin Park’s The Hunting Party Remains In Top 10

Linkin Park’s The Hunting Party fell to #9 this week, following its #3 placement last week. In its second week of availability, The Hunting Party has sold 28,815 units, a 74 percent decrease from its first week sales. Overall, the album has moved 139,414 units. During an interview with HipHopDX this year, Linkin Park rapper, singer and producer Mike Shinoda explained how collaborator Rakim influenced the band. “He’s an artist whose respected but not mentioned really in Pop culture even though he is the Godfather of a lot of things in Hip Hop,” Shinoda said of Rakim. “He’s kind of a bar by which lyricists are measured, but the times have changed. He’s not gonna make a Pop music song for people to dance to and shit. He refuses to do it, and that’s how we felt on this record. We didn’t wanna play by the rules and make a Pop record, we don’t have it in us. I think it was what we connected on immediately and why he came all the way from New York to record with us.”

    Ab-Soul’s These Days… Lands At #11

Ab-Soul’s These Days… sold 21,812 units in its first week of availability, allowing the TDE emcee to fall into #11. These Days…, which is available for streaming via HipHopDX, has been critically acclaimed. The project recently earned a 4 out of 5 in its HipHopDX review. “If TDE has an unheralded trait left it’s an almost universally thoughtful approach to song sequencing,” HipHopDX says of the effort. “These Days… feels complete by the end as another properly dosed project. Somewhere on the album, Soul projects his own self-worth: ‘enlightenment from a low life that’s more than likely high.’ He’s let the high filter out more of the revelation, and it sounds like a more accessible piece of entertainment than his last. It’s not the call to arms some expected, but Ab-Soul is as convincingly conspicuous as he’s ever been.”

    1. i’m white and i’m say that whites are taking over hip-hop… g eazy and all these other homo white rappers… ruining the culture…

    2. too bad everyone streams or downloads shit for free otherwise album sales would be in the hundred thousands a lot more often… back in 2007 the top 5 albums each week were all at LEAST 100k… now we’re lucky if the #1 is even at 100k smh

      1. That was a different fanbase, rest of the old heads

New base can sit home & act like a fan with the internet and listen to a stream, dont forget riaa is doing streams

    3. TDE management fucked up big time on Soul’s album. He should at least be in top 5. FLOP. J-Lo is an international superstar and hasn’t even hit 100k yet? FLOP. Michael Jackson’s posthumous album only moved 330k units which proves 80% of his fanbase are liars. FLOP.

      1. It’s not really a Michael Jackson album. The album consists of reject tracks being remixed.

      2. soul did solid numbers look at how much his last album did

and it wasnt backed by interscope like kendrick and Q’s it was independent n couldnt have cost more than 100k to make

    4. LOLS AT AB’S ALBUM SALES LOOK AT THAT FLOP YMCMB STAYING ON TOP
“MEN LIE WOMEN LIE NUMBERS DONT”

    5. G Eazy and ab soul flopping. Both suck and can’t even reach ross’s sales.

      Also
      Robin Thicke (Star Trak/Interscope) 120-125k
      Trey Songz (Atlantic) 85-95k
      Seether (Bicycle Music/Concord) 35-40k
      Magic! (Latium/RCA) 27-32k

      Robin Thicke winning again.

      1. Dumb, ignorant fucks like you give me such a damn headache. 46k is good in this climate. They’re selling records, that’s all that matters. Your opinions are so fucking baseless and invalid that it’s not even funny. Look at yourselves.

        “Robin Thicke is winning.”
        “G-Easy flopped”

Y’all sound so god damned retarded. Your arguments are so god damned retarded. SMFH. Ugh, every week’s it’s the same damn thing with you morons. Why the fuck can’t idiots like you just make like lemmings and jump off a fucking cliff already?

      2. OP, you got everything wrong. G Eazy and Ab Soul aren’t flopping since they’re not signed to major labels and they don’t suck. Also, you got Robin Thicke’s projections wrong as he’s about to sell 20-25K. Dude is losing.

    6. It’s really funny and unbelievable to me that someone I have never heard of before can outsell Ab Soul. Hmm!

    7. Nobody cares about hip hop enough to buy it anymore, shits as disposable as a used diaper now.

      1. same thing i said when i went to the roots picnic lol. hell he said the same thing on stage. i think hes from the bay.

      1. I guess they’re just part of the whole persona, or lifestyle in the past. Linkin Park with the whole JayZ collaboration, and J-Lo and Joe because they’re R&B but also collaborations with Hip-Hop artists… I guess…

      1. look at how Pharell has turned to…he is no more hip hop..he dresses like homo…been in the game longer does not mean shit…everybody comes into the game to make money…50 has been in the game shorter but has made more money than Pharell…so 50 won and he still wining.

    8. Can’t we not do this every single week, HipHopDX? Stop reporting album sales and giving these idiots a platform to argue over who sold the most or who sold the least. Listen here, you idiots, quantity doesn’t equal quality, so stop pulling out your calculators and acting as though you have this inside knowledge of the industry because at the end of the day, you’re nothing but clueless internet nerds who don’t know shit and are just witnesses who have nothing better to do than to determine how much pocket change the next man has. STOP IT!!

      1. These weirdos are all over the place rc, dx just trying to keep some here

        Go look at hotnewhiphop

    9. ab did well in little promo time,no physical copy(looked everywhere!!)remember cats like akon did like 25 first week…not comparing just saying

    10. Trey Songz (Atlantic) 85-95k
      Seether (Bicycle Music/Concord) 35-40k
      Magic! (Latium/RCA) 27-32k
      Robin Thicke (Star Trak/Interscope) 20-25k

Damn, Robin Thicke fell the fuck off. He conquered 2013 with Blurred Lines and his newest album is bound to tank.

      1. It’s a last minute addition. Most fans aren’t aware that there’s another album released. The single got barely promoted. This one will have huge legs and the album is a sernading tribute to his former wife. This was made to win over his wife back, not to make much money.

      2. Bullshit. This is a flop for Robin Thicke, one that makes him look desperate and thirsty. Paula will never take him back for this.

      3. I don’t think sales were the first thing on thicke’s mind. This is a last minute addition where most fans aren’t aware of. It’s more of a sweet concept album. He’s showing dedication and hopes to win sexy paula back.

      4. Either way, it’s a flop. His album is more of a desperate man trying to get back to his wife after she dumped him. It’s not sweet at all.

      5. Like I said, the main goal was to win paula over again. Artists do break up albums all the time. What you call being desperate is for me not giving up.

      6. And it’s not working. True, artists do break-up albums, but they never sound desperate or thirsty like Thicke. This is an act of desperation.

      7. How does it sound desperate? What makes Paula hated that other albums don’t have? When a girl breaks up, don’t you want to try and win her over again? I can’t understand why people are panning thicke’s attempts to win paula over again.

      8. The way he carries himself through this whole thing and the fact that he cheated on her makes it desperate. If someone cheated on their girl and they try to win them back, they deserve no sympathy.

      9. So he made a mistake. It’s hard to be faithful with all this fame. He’s trying to atone for his mistake. I bet if JT did an album about jessica biel, you will be all over his nuts.

      10. Cheating ain’t a mistake. Thicke ain’t trying to right a wrong at all. I’m pretty sure JT dedicated a bunch of his songs to his wife. Why are you, all of a sudden, a Robin Thicke dickrider?

      11. What’s wrong with being a fan of someone? I’m sure you’re a jt dickrider too. And the songs he did are 1. not breakup songs and 2. going into uncomfortable territory. Thicke knows the boundaries.

      12. You’re not being a fan, you’re being a dickrider, which I’m not. Timberlake’s songs don’t go into uncomfortable territory.

      13. Thicke did fall off. America now thinks this guy is a dick. Most of the songs off the new album are about him thinking they will have sex again. Why would people want to listen to a guy confess he’s been a dog for years?

      1. No, that’s justin timberlake acting black. He works with timbaland and acts like a white jay z.

      2. Timberlake acts black all the time. Robin Thicke at least respects it. ALso, Thicke respects women while JT does horrible songs about disrespecting women.

      3. Timberlake doesn’t act black at all. Also, JT respects women and doesn’t do horrible songs disrespecting them, he has good song respecting them.

      4. What’s wrong with blurred lines? It’s all about letting women show themselves and not being forced to conform.

    11. OP, you got everything wrong. G Eazy and Ab Soul aren’t flopping since they’re not signed to major labels and they don’t suck.

TDE signed black hippy and its members over to interscope.

      1. No, they didn’t. Only Kendrick and Q were signed to Interscope. Ab-Soul and Black Hippy are only signed to TDE.

      2. Isaiah, SZA, and Ab-Soul are signed to TDE only. DO your research next time before you speak.

    12. That paula album from robin thicke is disrespectful because

      1. It should be private
      2. He’s charging people money to listen to his sob story
      3. He keeps making public displays about it
      4. If you break up, let it go
      5. How do we know thicke won’t cheat again?

      1. “It’s hard to be faithful with all this fame. He’s trying to atone for his mistake”

Maybe, but if you read about the album you’ll see that Thicke is just guilty he got caught, and looking to do it again because he can. It’s not about fame. That’s such a copout.

      2. Plus if he was really serious, he wouldn’t charge fans to buy his sob story (music i use loosley)

    13. How in the world would Ab-soul be considered a flop when it’s independent with not promo and it wasn’t in stores, only came out on iTunes and Amazon. Just sayin

    14. You’re not being a fan, you’re being a dickrider, which I’m not. Timberlake’s songs don’t go into uncomfortable territory.

THe term, dickrider, doesn’t exist. Timberlake did sexyback and carry out. Thicke doesn’t do songs like that.

      1. Blurred lines has clever lines like what rhymes with hug me? Why are you such a hater of him?

    15. Its so blatant you can see the pattern

Click-bait comment, stretch to 10 responses, refresh and repeat.

      1. Fact is son used to get 8-10 genuine replies but now it reads like a petty argument between coworkers

    16. #11….SMDH!…AB-SOUL is way better than SCHOOLBOY Q’s OXYMORON……I think he just doesn’t have a DRAKE-like mainstream sound for the radio……I will buy THESE DAYS…..OXYMORON is LACKLUSTER!…..AB-SOUL is lyrical like KENDRICK..but KENDICK LAMAR is more DIVERSE…KENDRICK can do radio hits mixtape songs and still maintain not being a POPTART like DRAKE…LOL……#CONTROL SYSTEM…13/16!…AB-SOUL’s INDIE INSTANT CLASSIC……#THESE DAYS is REAL HIP HOP….too bad ppl are still love THE HIP/POP rappers….this is what happen with J COLE’s debut album….when time goes by..THESE DAYS will be more appreciated…..NAS is the perfect example of this…

    17. All you TDE #FUCKBOYS eat a Dick!

Aint nobody trying to listen to that Ab-Soul bullshit….

We gave Kendrick a pass, but the rest of them Niggaz is FUCKBOYS

    18. finaly….WHEN THE HELL IS “JAY ROCK” coming????….thi is the BLACK HIPPY LEADER….KENDRICK LAMAR’s only rival out of the BH click…..#FOLLOW ME HOME 2011 his debut is a 13/16…INSTANT CLASSIC!…JAY ROCK is made for REAL STREET/HOP heads though..so he won’t need to ride KENDRICVK’s success like SB-Q did…and he has the str8 swag over AB-SOUL….

    19. So 50 the hottest indie artist in the game? haha he gave his album away and he still gonna make over a million dollars from it he don’t have a recording deal just a distribution deal he getting all that bread that’s why you don’t see none of his so called enimies talking about his numbers.

    20. “and it wasnt backed by interscope like kendrick and Q’s it was independent n couldnt have cost more than 100k to make”

That’s a poor excuse a lot of you thought tde ws gonna dominate the rap game because Kendrick went platinum indie or not ab should have done better

      1. Even 50 sold double that. That’s embarrasing and not a good look for someone hanging with kendrick and q all the time.

      2. Again, Soul doesn’t have Interscope backing him up like Kendrick and Q did and there wasn’t much promo around the album.

      3. 50 didn’t flop haha when you indie its about the bred you do know he will make more from his album than a major going gold he only has a distribution deal idk why you cant see that or refuse to see that 50,s 80K>>>>>ross328k

    21. These sales isn’t looking so hot! Go and check out thegrandreport(dot)com, they have some good videos on there too!

      1. Its still selling and will continue to sell as long as he continues to promote it and perform.
The current single being promoted is “Supreme” and the video for “ShameOnANigga” will drop next week.

      2. LMAO selling 38 copies a week does not count as still selling, shit aint never going gold unless he dies

      3. There are many options at an artists disposal to sell additional copies of an album after it falls out of the Top 200..

In-store signings are a common method used by smaller artists but its time consuming and not a viable option with an album that has been out as long as MasterMind.

The best option is to continue to promote the album through singles and music videos while touring and doing shows, all it takes is the right visual/video to spark interest in a album. At this stage of the campaign I would only do minor promo for the album while channeling all resources and energy into Meeks project.

      4. Meek mills singles both flopped, too bad rihanna wouldn’t return his calls but she dont work with scrubs.

    22. French did not make Loyal a hit. His whole verse was basically some recycled Jay-z lines and he replaced Remy with Ciroc, I wonder if he gotta pay royalties for that.

    23. 81K for Animal Ambition is horrible and the worst flop in recent memory.

50-Cent is an international movie/music star with his own label, website, headphones, movie company, cable television show, and a half-a-billion dollars at his disposal yet he failed to sell as many records as the Independant Earl Sweatshirt.

50-Cent is intensely active on every media and social media platform known to mankind but gimmicks, reunions, videos, and SummerJam couldn’t prevent his album from flopping horribly.

      1. The Flop of the year, it has been out for an entire month and only sold a miserable 80,000 and got outsold by Iggy and G-Easy. Ab Soul dropped an album with universal critical acclaim and will make the top 10 lists on the best album of 2014 so his album will sell regardless, especially if it’s nominated for a Grammy.

      2. “81K for Animal Ambition is horrible and the worst flop in recent memory.”

nah, J Lo, Ashanti, Ja Rule, Nelly all had way bigger flops.

      3. J Lo 5th album did 200K
        Nelly 5th album did 225K
Ja Rule 5th album did 450K

50 5th album wont even crack 100K after the most intense promo campaign of the year.

      4. lolololol

        indie vs major dummy

and who cares about sales when hes eating better than all of them making movies, selling tv shows.

      5. “50 5th album wont even crack 100K after the most intense promo campaign of the year.”

niggas hating hard. LMFAO @ “most intense promo campaign of the year”… none of that matters if you give the whole album away for free months before it comes out…

and if he at 81k after less than 1 month its safe to say he will surprass 100k before summer ends but keep hating.

      6. LMAO!! The leader of the geeks has been using the idiotic logic that 50 “gave away” the whole album as if every other artists doesent get their album pirated and bootlegged and as if the singles and album werent available on ITunes!

His Stans are shitting on him by telling the world that the only way he can sell records is of he has a major label with Eminem, Dre and Iovine behind him!

Who needs a label when you are one of the richest rappers in the world with your own website, your own cable shows, your own movie company and millions of followers on Twitter/Instagram?

      7. “as if every other artists doesent get their album pirated and bootlegged and as if the singles and album werent available on ITunes!”

Every artist does not put out every song with a video months before the release date but keep hating… I know you got nothing else to do with your time lonely ass bitch niggger

    24. 50 out partying, commenters out for the weekend, im ghost inna couple of hours

You still here talking flop and sales, LOL

    25. “81K for Animal Ambition is horrible and the worst flop in recent memory.”

I guess the Ross fanboy geek blocked Triple C’s epic flop outta his mind. I wonder if that album pushed 30k yet in 5 years…

    26. ALRIGHT BLACK PPL. HIP HOP IS DONE WITH. WHAT’S THE NEXT GENRE FOR WHITE PPL TO STEAL AND WHITEWASH THE LEGENDS OF, IN 20-30 YEARS??

      1. whitewash the legends? nigga i aint hear no one talking about big. pac, nas and hov not being top 5 DOA so miss me with that bs just cause a few whiteys are moving albums white the black guys are floppin.

      2. “ALRIGHT BLACK PPL. HIP HOP IS DONE WITH. WHAT’S THE NEXT GENRE FOR WHITE PPL TO STEAL AND WHITEWASH THE LEGENDS OF, IN 20-30 YEARS??”

        #DEAD

    27. Yoo! who the fuck is G-Eazy? I never heard of this guy and I’m white too… nevermind I don’t even care.

    28. Sad that the animal album flopped, it was available for purchase on ITunes but the fans purchased
Iggy Azelia instead. The Dickriders are so desperate to excuse the flop that they are saying that Curtis
Gave the songs away LMAO!!! Nas Won!

      1. @Bruthadee liked a girl but 50 and G-Unit ran a train on her and he been hating everyday since then (10 years). She didn’t want him cause he’s a broke boy with long fingernails.

      2. Nas won but Game won also, Game killed G Unit and made a succesful career afterwards while the rest are butlers and chauffeurs

      3. 50 scuffed Bruthadee’s only pair of Nikes and he just cant let it go

i bet his 40 year old ass shed a tear when he saw nas and 50 on stage arm in arm

      4. Nas won LOLOL the so called GOAT legend rapper and hes broke as a joke. when the last time you seen Game or Nas on a Forbes list?

      5. I doubt Nas is broke he can sell out shows worldwide and is still in demand for guest features, plus he gets that check from Henny. Only golddiggers care about the Forbes list, this is about dope music and Nas and Game are shitloads better than Five-o.

    29. None of the single from Animal Ambition charted and the Munkee kept dropping single after single in desperation trying to find a single that the public liked.

      1. you still going @Bruthadee? I never seen someone so butthurt in my life… especially for your age, man you look about 44 years old.

I guess you got no friends to party with today. HAHAH

      2. yeah the public is infatuated with homosexuals and frauds in 2014. thats why weezy and young thug are hot and rick ross still has a career despite being fake than vanilla ice and milli vanilli.

    30. White rappers run the rap game and Iggy and G Eazy bodied one of the biggest artists in rap 50 Cents.

    31. I just keep leaving comments about 50 Cent because I’m lonely and sad. Got no friends to party with today so I’m spending another day on my computer trolling HHDX.

Anyone wanna skype hit me up on twitter and we can exchange info. Hot sexy white boys only. younger the better.

      1. yes sure it flopped now go outside and have some fun. you need to get some sun and maybe some social interaction with real people.

      1. how does this affect your life? what are you doing today besides talking about a 9 figure nigga flopping?

      2. Get a life fucktard, you think you are hot shit because you can elicit emotional responses from sheltered white kids who worship middle aged Black guys who rhyme words over instrumentals?

      3. hey asshole I hope you get some type of sick satisfaction torturing some nerdy kid who gives your post validation by reacting to it instead of ignoring you like 99 percent of us who treat you like you dont exist.

      4. @bruthadee posted again, hes so lonely. lol im canadian so i dont celebrate 4th of july but he has no friends or family so he will be here all night trolling for reactions.

      5. I dont celebrate the 4th of July due to my religious beliefs and geographic location so I will be here on HHDX hoping in pain to get reactions and responses from the people who I mention in my posts.

      6. how can making over a million dollars from album that had every song released before it dropped? he dont have a recording deal just a distribution deal he will make more money from this project than a major artist actually going gold and he doing shows. 50 the hotttest rapper in the game

    32. Robin Thicke about to sell 20k first week on interscope and really niggas wanna talk about flops LOL
