Hip Hop Album Sales: Week Ending 04/13/2014

This week, Pharrell’s G  I  R  L continues its success as it climbs back into the Billboard Top 200 albums chart’s Top 2. Meanwhile, YG’s My Krazy Life, Rick Ross’s Mastermind and Eminem’s The Marshall Mathers LP 2 drop to the bottom of the chart’s Top 20.

Elsewhere on the chart, TDE singer SZA makes her debut with Z, a project that earned the Top Dawg Ent. artist a #39 placement. SZA’s Z, which is available to stream here, sold 6,980 copies in its first week of availability.

    Pharrell’s G  I  R  L Climbs To #2

Pharrell’s G  I  R  L continues its success on the Billboart Top 200 Albums chart. The project’s sales had an 18 percent increase from 24,808 last week to 29,385 this week. As a result, Pharrell’s most recent album went from #9 to #2 in seven days. G  I  R  L has sold 271,518 units overall. This week, Pharrell made headlines when he shed tears of joy while appearing on Oprah Prime. During the episode, P viewed a video of many people from across the globe dancing to “Happy.” “It’s overwhelming because it’s like, I love what I do and I just appreciate the fact that people have believed in me for so long, that I could make it to this point, to feel that,” Pharrell said in the interview.

YG’s My Krazy Life Falls To #18

YG’s My Krazy Life didn’t have the same success as Pharrell’s G  I  R  L. Instead, My Krazy Life sold 11,741 copies this week, a 29 percent decrease from 16,437 units last week. This helped drop the album from #16 to #18. Overall, YG’s album has sold 112,029 copies. Yesterday (April 15), Nas named YG one of the rappers he listens to in the Queensbridge emcee’s Reddit AMA session.

    Rick Ross’ Mastermind & Eminem’s MMLP2 Fall To #19 & #20

Rick Ross’ Mastermind follows My Krazy Life at #19 on the chart this week and Eminem is right behind both at #20 with The Marshall Mathers LP 2. Mastermind sold 11,6000 copies this week while Eminem’s MMLP2 sold 12,857 units. Both experienced drops with Mastermind’s sales decreasing by 24 percent and MMLP2’s sales decreasing by 12 percent. Nevertheless, Rick Ross’ most recent project has sold 301,525 units overall while Eminem’s latest album release has sold 2,053,107 copies in total.

      1. obviously, eminem has been in the top 20 for 6 months, thats a great feet, plus he is number from hiphop artists and the top three they have mentioned, so it makes sense in a way

    1. HOW FINE ASS SZA GONNA SELL 7000 COPIES IN THE FIRST WEEK? IT’S A DAMN FINE ALBUM. OH THAT’S RIGHT? GUES IT’S BECAUSE IT DON’T HAVE POP OVERTONES AND SELLING SLUTTY SEX LIKE BE-YAWN-CE’S LAME ASS, RIGHT? FUCK OUTTA HERE.

      1. 7,000 is good numbers for sza
look at the sales for section 80 from kendrick
look at habits and contradictions from schoolboy

        tde knows what their doing

    2. I’m sure Pharrell is selling like crazy over seas. Be sure to check out thegrandreport, they have some good viral videos and more on there

      1. Hell yeah his single is HUGE, it literally charted in almost every country where they have a chart, the song is gay as fuck but salute to Pharrel anyway for making a mega hit. Its a pop song but still a win for HipHop because he came up with us.

      2. “Hell yeah his single is HUGE, it literally charted in almost every country where they have a chart, the song is gay as fuck but salute to Pharrel anyway for making a mega hit. Its a pop song but still a win for HipHop because he came up with us.”

I always show love to Pharrel, I agree he came up on the HipHop side but I just cant get into GIRL, I support his Rap stuff but when him and Timbo do the pop stuff Im not on board.
        Sill love the Neptunes.

      1. mobb indie they made almost 350k just off that album you a idiot cash money floppin on a maor label they have to recoup stupid kids shit Freddie gibbs made more money from his album than ross made from master FLOP

      2. mobb was selling their album on kickstarter. for like 15k you could get you own verses from P and Hav with an autographed album and t-shirt.

      3. lets talk about the acttual music mobb deep just released one of the best albums of the year andthats a fact so let the sheep buy that mainstream trash im good with this album and Freddie gibbs album hard copy bitches

      4. They had some really dope songs on there but the lack of promotion hurt them, people are such sheep nowadays they only buy albums that sell a lot or get Grammys so the good shit gets ignored while the sugary stuff gets ate up.

    3. SPOILER: IN THE NEXT TWO WEEKS, MASTERMIND WILL EXPERIENCE A SALES INCREASE OF 56.83%, SELLING A TOTAL OF 1.23 MILLION COPIES.

    4. haha HATERS WELL ROSS FANS SAID P FLOPPED his album will go gold with a platinum plus single mastermind IS DEAD

      1. Cant say it will go Gold but it sold well enough to ensure that Def Jam made a profit, 2-Chainz sold less and he had bigger singles and he already announced his new Def Jam album is on the way.
You don’t have to sell the most as long as you sell more than 99% of your peers so if only a handful of artists sell more than you its still a budget waiting for you untill you fail to make a profit.

      2. ” 2-Chainz sold less and he had bigger singles and he already announced his new Def Jam album is on the way.”

EP is not an album, they wouldnt give him an album budget LOL

      3. how do you know def jam made a profit?
        300,000×7 is 2.1 million
you really think it cost less than 2 mil to make and promote mastermind?

      1. 300,000 copies with no single in the Top 200 means Def Jam will be releasing another Rozay album in the future, besides geek-guy, Rozay is on Def Jam and MMG are on Atlantic so get your facts straight.

      2. “It will still go gold.thug cry will be ross’ s happy going to no.1 for weeks.”

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Please. Ross isn’t going gold and he’ll never have a #1 single even if he works with a pop star.

“You say that every album and he comes back stronger than ever.”

The nigga’s getting weaker everytime, not stronger.

“300,000 copies with no single in the Top 200 means Def Jam will be releasing another Rozay album in the future, besides geek-guy, Rozay is on Def Jam and MMG are on Atlantic so get your facts straight.”

Whatever excuse you make up to defend your hero’s flop.

      3. “300,000 copies with no single in the Top 200 means Def Jam will be releasing another Rozay album in the future, besides geek-guy, Rozay is on Def Jam and MMG are on Atlantic so get your facts straight.”

Labels go by 24-36 month climate so if Mr Ross is ranked #9 best selling rap artist in the last two years like that list indicates then he is still considered a top seller and top priority at the label.
The Def Jam merger will shake things up a bit in that building and should help get some more budgets cracked and projects off the shelf.

      4. “300,000 copies with no single in the Top 200 means Def Jam will be releasing another Rozay album in the future, besides geek-guy, Rozay is on Def Jam and MMG are on Atlantic so get your facts straight.”

Does it? Maybe theyll throw something out there to make the money they spent on mastermind back

i dont see that happening though since they pushed back mastermind a bunch of times because none of ross’s singles connected

      5. Def Jam is pleased with 3 Million generated off 300,000, especially when MMG did the bulk of the promotion and videos, you don’t have to sell the most just sell enough to make your label a nice profit off your budget and you make your profit off your touring and shows.

      6. stop making assumptions troll

def jam does not generate 3 million off 300,000 copies sold…$3-4 of every 10$ album goes to itunes, best buy, etc.

and def jam/universal pays for the promotion and the videos from the album not maybach music he just happens to have one of his guys directing most of the videos

      7. I just did the numbers with our accountant, and my client Rick Ross is estimated to sell 1.23 million copies in the next two weeks. His popularity might seem low, but I guarantee you it’s gradually increasing and making an impact on his overall sales margin. We are looking at a 57.4% increase, people. #bawse

      8. i thought u were ross’s accountant

i did hear he shipped another 500k copies and is giving them away with every 12 piece meal from wing stop like a boss

    5. Hiphopdx…11,6000 units? Lol….And if Eminem sold more than Rick Ross why isnt he 19th instead he is 20…Also it says he sold 11,000 this weak..I thought that was ross…Stop smokin dabs #Rookie

      1. damn good catch, If Marshal sold 12,857 he should be ahead of Rick Ross and YG

YG sold 11,741 – gets rounded to 12,000
Rick Ross sold 11,600 – gets rounded to 12,000
Eminem sold 12,857, gets rounded to 11,000 instead of 13,000 like it should be.

how does that make any sense?

    6. Here at our company, we cover pharrells losses and buy 20-30k copies each seek until it goes platinum. It had really sold only 130k.

      1. Chicks buy albums and this album is dedicated to chicks, plus its not a rap album so soccer moms can cop it and enjoy it while they make their lasagna and tossed salads.

      2. pharrell has hits on his album and a following of people(women) willing to support him

ross has no hits on his album and a bunch of people who will illegally download his shit if they didnt buy it the first week

def jam has been known to buy units…I never heard of that from columbia…thats why you always see huge 80% drop offs from the 1st to the 2nd week from def jam…

if either of the two had their label buying units it was ross no contest

      1. they were selling all kinds of packages where you could meet with mobb deep or do songs with them on stage for a few hundreds bucks.

      2. how do you make 350k selling 10,000 copies off a 10$ album that you might see 6-7$ from if youre independent?

        please explain

      3. they werent all $10 albums, there was all kinds of packages available with vinyl records, autographed albums, shirts, tickets, etc…

      4. that has nothing to do with record sales…
ok so they made some merch n tour money with the record how does a legendary group that went gold every time struggle to sell 15k copies ten years later? dont say its cuz theyre independent because you know they wouldnt do any better on a major now with the music theyre making

eminem sold some mmlp2 packages for 300$ you dont see people talking about that

    7. Best selling albums of 2013-2014

Bad promo and no radio singles or high priced videoed pretty much ensured she wouldnt do any damage on the charts but ai think she dropped a way better album than Jhene Aikoo and it will continue to pick up pace with word of mouth and critics give it the love it deserves.

      1. 7,000 is good numbers for sza
look at the sales for section 80 from kendrick
look at habits and contradictions from schoolboy

tde drops an indy project first to get the momentum going they know what theyre doing

    9. How can you be mad at YG? Yes you can say he underperformed because of how big “My N*gga” was but he isnt a hippy, a nerd or a white guy, his album was straight up street shit with no filter and no sell out shit.

      100,000 X $10 = $1,000,000 For “MKL”

      and

      1,000,000 X $1 = $1,000,000 For “My N*gga”

All them mustard beats came cheap and the only major feature was Drake so my nicca made good and
Def Jam will give him another moneybag.

      1. “All them mustard beats came cheap and the only major feature was Drake so my nicca made good and ”

Sometimes you need cross over features and diffrent sounds, the problem with YGs album is that its too much Mustard and not enough variety with the features. It is still a Hot album IMO.

      2. After that gets cut up, he won’t pocket enough to justify another album which he’ll probably get anyway just cause labels love ass raping a rap artist’s pockets.

      1. EMINEM – The Marshall Mathers LP 2 : 2,053,000
DRAKE – Nothing Was The Same : 1,535,000
        JAY-Z – Magna Carta Holy Grail : 1,139,000

        2 CHAINZ – B.O.A.T.S. II: Me Time : 240,700

Q about to pass Tity Boi

    10. The next big album to drop is Future and his singles are getting major burn and he got the bitches in his pocket so he should do pretty good, other than that the Spring is kind off quite but we got Styles, Cube, Taekwon, Wu and then Trey Songz for the bitches.

      1. Raekwon aint shit, how you gonna ruin the Wu Tang album by boycotting the shit? I hope a DJ makes some blends and adds his ass ro some of the songs anyway.

      1. yeah its amazing to see as most artists disappear after 2 months max.

the one bitter old guy on here is going to say its all because he is a weirdo who appealed to hipsters by putting white people no one knows on his album.

    11. #ROOOOZAAAAAAYYYY….

BOUGHT THE ALBUM OVER THE WEEKEND.ITS NOT ROZAY’S BEST, “TEFLON DON” AND “DEEPER THAN RAP” WERE MY PERSONAL FAVORITES.BUT THE ALBUM DOPE. THE BEST TRACKS FOR ME IN THE ALBUM ARE
      *NOBODY
      *DEVIL IS A LIE
      *WHAT A SHAME
      *BLK N WHITE

      1. Sanctified is the best song, the Gospel part gives you goosebumps
Mafia Music 3 is the second best song because the Reggea is crazy
Blessing in Disguise is the third best song because the Soul in it is sick.

    12. We are back at it again, its Wed. and all the bitches come out to attack Rick Ross numbers. We go through this every time Rozay releases and album,u bitches say it will never go GOLD, then it does go gold, then u bitches say it will never go plat of course Rozay cant go plat. Not with the shit he raps about, his core fan base or the controversy surrounding his past. Quit stating the obvious and STFU

      1. We are back at it again, its Wed. and all the groupies come out to defend Rick Ross numbers. We go through this every time Rozay releases a flop album, u bitches say it will go platinum and then it struggle to reach gold,

      2. Thats one of the hilarious things about a Hater, they lack the intellect and knowledge of us real music fans, they can spew their hatred but they cant use logic or facts to support their hatred. The object is ro punish and torture them with facts and stats and make them hurt and angry inside untill they ate forced to attack you personally and lash out wildly. Haters are our toys.

      3. Thats one of the hilarious things about a dickriding groupie, they lack the intellect and knowledge of us real music fans, they can spew their groupie bullshit but they cant use logic or facts to support their dickriding. The object is ro punish and torture them with facts and stats and make them hurt and angry inside untill they ate forced to attack you personally and lash out wildly. Dickriders are our toys.

      4. “Quit stating the obvious and STFU”

I think the one thing thats pretty obvious is that the shakeup at Def Jam was a good thing, they need some new blood but Pecas and his team should stay. The merger has the depts split up and minimized so Im interested to see if the output increases or decreases but we all know the major promo is gone for Hip-hop releases so lets see how they do the Roots and how they do Fabolous.
        It will be interesting.

      5. its hilarious how you talk like you’re part of the industry when you’re just a blog geek like the rest of them

      6. I swear my comments gets the most reply from Gay-Unit stans on HHDX, Loool, why u fha-ggots b trolling my comments just to respond? loool, these Gay-Unit h0m0s must be getting served a sack full or Curtis Dick for every reply on HHDX,

Yall can choke n Die on a sack full of HIV infected dicks. DIE bitches.

    13. @Anonymous
” 2-Chainz sold less and he had bigger singles and he already announced his new Def Jam album is on the way.”

“EP is not an album, they wouldnt give him an album budget LOL”

EP/Album whatever its no doubt that Boats2 underperformed with Fergie and Drake features, Pharell production and major airplay with Feds Watchin but Boats1 over performed so Tity Boi has some wiggle room. Besides Def Jam botched the project by releasing the albums back to back so close to each other.

Over saturation is based on greed by the label, I don’t blame TiT.

      1. Its difficult at times for me to respect Slim and Baby as label execs because they neglect their lesser known artists waaaaaay too much, it’s no reason why the Young Money compilation shouldn’t be on the damn charts with all the moey the label hauls in.

      2. Releasing the LP is just greed and Def Jam trying to calatalize off his hotness, he has that Duralo song that’s killing the charts and they want to recoup the losses from his last disaster, but like I said he did over 600,000 with his first joint and had monster singles so he has wiggle room.

The problem with 2Chainz is that he doesent have a strong team around him so Def Jam is doing all the leg work so they have more input on his moves and they are hit and miss sometimes like with that awful Fergie song.

      3. Don’t blame the label for 2 Chainz’ failures, blame the man himself. He’s starting to lose his buzz.

      4. He just needs to go over the blueprint again and see why people liked the first album, buy stayed away from the second.

      1. Thats odd, most people on Rap websites root for the rap albums over the pop albums, it must be a
Personal issue with you. I want both of them to do well.

      2. I can’t support a police ass nigga stealing a living mans government name while he was locked up in a prison similar to the one the police ass nigga used to work at.

      3. What a sick little ignorant child, you support killers, robbers, womanBeaters, sex-offenders and
crack-dealers but you can’t support a rapper that used an incarcerated drug dealers name as a stage name to tap under?

LOL no wonder Rozay gets so many consigns from Kool G Rap, Reakwon and Scarface, people like you deserve to be curved and disrespected with your opinion shitted on.

    14. My Krazy Life will have legs just watch, he has at least 3 singles on there that could be hits and Mustard beats sound better in the summertime so dont count the Young Gangsta out just yet…if he snags Drake for the visual then he has a second wind! All themTDE collabs he better bubble with them boys while they are Hot and drop those movies…..I Just Wanna Party.

Rozay will move steady he has the Wayne video in the chamber and a bonafied cut for the bitches with Weeknd but with Scarface about to drop a new project they should do a mini-movie for Blessing. Oddly no remix action that I can see.

Schoolboy Q is in good position, his team is getting crazy love and he tours like an animal so if he stays on grind mode Aand does some in-stores and drops that visual with Suga Free and does a remix for the
2-Chainz cut with Rich Homie Quan then he will see 300K.

      1. Sorry Momma got action at being a hit but it’s not really the party type joint that everybody is into but it’s still a hit no matter what.

      2. homie always talks like hes a record executive or a manager, seems like he wishes he was part of the industry so bad.

      3. “Sorry Momma got action at being a hit but it’s not really the party type joint that everybody is into but it’s still a hit no matter what.”

It has to chart in order to be a hit and that song isn’t charting.

      4. YG won’t even do 200k. I don’t know the budget of the album, but I’m guessing it was semi substantial.

      1. The world is just dumb. That’s why happy is popular. Pharrell sold out by doing the soundtrack for DM2

      2. It’s a Happy feel-good song from a movie and it’s family friendly and celebratory, kids, women, gays and girls LOVE that song and Oprah co signed it so it gets burn in soccer mom mini-vans and in drag queen dressing rooms….we still bumpin Move That Dope but Becky want dat Happy.

      3. Pharrell sold out by having a movie conmpany promoting his shit. That’s the same reason let it go was a success.

      4. The movie company did not promote Pharrell’s shit. Let It Go succeeded because it’s a Disney song from the highest-grossing animated film of all time.

      5. It’s popular because it’s an anthem song. You don’t have to like a specific music genre to like that song, it’s a feel good tune anyone in the world can enjoy and sing.

Thus, why it’s popular in over 20 countries and 4x platinum, getting placements in other movies, commercials, shows, and will get a slew of awards when the time comes.

Some people just want to hear music, they don’t care about all that nonsense y’all are talking about right now.

      6. 1. It’s a circle time crap song for preschools.
        2. It’s funny you say that because happy orignated from a shit movie named DM2. Pharrell paid other ad firms to show happy.
        3. Yet you are here replying to me.

    15. 2 Chain’s EP is more of a promotional ep for the BOAT 3 album either by the end of this year or the beginning of next.

      1. Good one. A free P. It’s going to be dope. The only reason why his last album tanked was due to lack of promotion. He’s still lifting talk dirty to success when derulo was struggling.

      2. No, it’ll be trash. You can’t blame promo for his last album flopping. He didn’t lift Derulo at all, Derulo’s lifting him.

      3. Im different (with dope production by the legendary dj mustard, why do you hate him_ made the top 40 all by himself.

      4. That’s just one wack, horribly-produced song from more than a year ago. Mustard sucks ass and is not legendary, his beats all sound the same.

    16. #ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOZAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!

      #ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOZAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!

      #ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOZAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!

      #ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOZAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!

      #ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOZAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!

      1. These 50 stans are dickriding j cole just because he put 50 on a song in the deluxe edition.

Anyway, J Cole is a crossover artist, unlike ross. Crossovers is just simply not ross’s thing.

      2. Wrong, bitch. Nobody here is a 50 stan. J Cole is not a crossover artist, he’s a hip-hop artist like Ross.

      3. Again, there’s no 50 stans here. Mac Miller’s not a wack crossover artist, he’s a hip-hop artist like J Cole and Ross.

      4. Cole and mac Miller are more hip-hop than Rick Ross to be fair.

They don’t make songs with Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj.

      5. Cole and Mac Miller both have white mothers so it was easy for them to put white girls like
Nicki Randa and Amber Coffman on their last albums. A singing white girl is an important
Ingredient to add to your album if that’s what you think your fans desire.

    17. Why do you got so much hatred against a song that promotes positivity instead of negativity?”

Because this song’s wack. There are plenty of dope songs from ross and ymcmb that promote happiness.

      1. Happy is circle time crap that came as a result of pharrell selling out and doing a movie soundtrack. Both of the other songs promote pleasing women.

      2. No, it isn’t. Happy promotes positivity. Pharrell didn’t sell out at all. Those other songs don’t promote pleasing women, they promote terrible pick-up lines and corny sexual references.

    18. That’s just one wack, horribly-produced song from more than a year ago. Mustard sucks ass and is not legendary, his beats all sound the same.”

It’s dope and it still made the top 40. 2 Chainz did that all by himself. Also, Mustard is consistently good.

      1. How is your bitching going to take away their success. Your favorite artist, ken doll is working with him

      2. They are dope if they keep having hits. I’m talking about kendrick you idiot. Mustard is working with him. Where’s your homie, DR Dre at?

      3. Having hits doesn’t make an artist dope. Chainz and Mustard suck ass. You wasn’t talking about Kendrick at all. Dre is in the studio.

      4. Kendrick’s working with mustard though. Also, people think they are dope if they keep supporting them. Dre will never release his studio sessions.

      5. That doesn’t mean anything. Chainz and Mustard still sucks. You can make up all of the bullshit you want to defend your favorites.

    19. SZA did some solid numbers, Pharrell is doing pretty good after a weak first week debut. Everyone else’s numbers are BAD.

      1. SZA did awful numbers and pharrell keeps buying albums to make it look like a success. Ross is doing very well though.

      2. Wrong. SZA did good numbers considering she had no promo or pop hits and Pharrell didn’t buy any of his shit, his fans did. Ross did terribly.

      3. Pharrell’s first week sales flopped. What fans does he have. SZA did horrible numbers and ross did great and will go gold.

      4. It’s not about first week sales, it’s about the total and Pharrell didn’t flop at all. SZA did good numbers with no promo. Ross did horribly and won’t sell gold.

    20. Man I want Drakes nose on my butthol so bad. Now everybody in the hood know that Drake can lick a booty real good.

    21. all you’re gonna see as answers as to why Pharrell has a smash hit will come with plenty of discrimination and ignorance

but the real answer will be it’s a song anyone in the world can enjoy & Rozay, YG, Q’s latest projects don’t contain music that can impact the world like Pharrell’s song

see, all the music in the world isn’t meant for you suckers, and congrats to Pharrell, who shunned the label who said “no one will listen to that song” and has the biggest hit of his career

      1. Pharrell wanted to play dirty and paid others to play his song and that’s how he had his hit. No one would even accept that shit otherwise.

      2. Nope. Pharrell did what other artists do and did a song that happened to be a hit. He didn’t pay anyone to play his shit.

    22. No, it isn’t. Happy promotes positivity. Pharrell didn’t sell out at all. Those other songs don’t promote pleasing women, they promote terrible pick-up lines and corny sexual references.”

It’s crap though and there are plenty of other doper songs that promote positivity. MC Hammer did a better job than that. The other songs were about pleasing women. Harlem shake promotes dancing and positivity.

      1. You’re still wrong. The song is dope. Hammer sucked at that. Those songs are about picking up women, not pleasing them. Harlem Shake is just another shitty EDM song with no message.

    23. The Labels want to double and triple up on their investment (your budget).

People tend to tabulate album sales but they forget to tabulate the singles sales, a flop used to be if you failed to break even but in 2014 a flop is a flop if you dont make the label a fat enough profit based on their BS projections.

The label doesn’t want to expend their resources just to break even in this shit, yeah they give you a budget but the man hours that go behind the promotion, marketing and payola add up and eat up your budget beyond the costs directly related to the music creation.

You can always use your own money with your project and the less money the label spends the less influenece they have over your project and the more creative control you have over the direction of your music but sometimes an artist needs the label staff to get their shit off the ground so they sell their Soul to the labels who rape them and ruin them.

This is why the Independant model will become the standard and small labels will take over the game and make these majors obsolete except for distribution…if even that.

      1. Indie doesn’t work for most though. Being on a major isn’t like sleeping in a graveyard. If you have some talent, and put in the work, you can make millions. Plenty have done it, and some still are.

    24. That doesn’t mean anything. Chainz and Mustard still sucks. You can make up all of the bullshit you want to defend your favorites.

Why do you think they suck?

      1. 2 Chainz can’t rap and sounds like shit. Mustard makes the same shitty, boring, simplistic beats that anyone with FL Studio can re-create.

      2. He can rap, he just raps too differently from your nostalgia tasters. Mustard changes the tone and uses a piano for who do you love, a great song that promotes loving and caring.

      3. No, Chainz can’t rap. Mustard’s beats all have the same 3-4 chords and using a different tone/instrument doesn’t make it different. Also, that song you mentioned is terrible and doesn’t promote loving and caring, it does the opposite.

      4. He can rap, he just raps too differently from your nostalgia tasters

That should mean better and evolved he does the opposite.

    25. You’re still wrong. The song is dope. Hammer sucked at that. Those songs are about picking up women, not pleasing them. Harlem Shake is just another shitty EDM song with no message.”

      1. Hammer’s songs are dope and fun. Pharrell is wack.
      2. In the town that I come from, we call them saving women and treating them with respect.
      3. Harlem shake promotes dancing.

      1. 1. You got that backwards. Hammer’s shit is wack.

        2. Your town is full of pieces of shit.

        3. Harlem Shake doesn’t promote anything.

    26. this is what I’m saying, you all up here trying to exercise your little bullsh!t opinion as the gospel, spewing all kinds of falsehoods to promote your troll status

I can understand this is your day to get your paid commenter hits up, but do you have to be such a bitch and f-ck up the article?

you’re going full-blown retard right now, calm the f-ck down and let others comment

      1. No, you’re not and no, you don’t. If you were really an accountant, you wouldn’t waste time here.

    27. and now y’all should see how the “accountant”, dentaldamboy, aka teeth-boy, is all over the c-section, pushing the replies up to 15-20 per comment, rambling on and on and on, the actions of what a paid commenter would do in a popular thread to make his money

      1. I often attempt to engage in conversation with him and attempt to get his attention but sometimes he just ignores me. Dentaldamboy is pretty cool.

    28. So much ignorance!

Pharell is singing pop songs about being happy so stop comparing him to rappers!
DJ Mustard has his own sound just leave him alone and in another year he will be Mia like Lex Luger!
MsterMind didnt flop it’s the 9th best selling album in the last 2 years, adjust for climate!
Yes Eminem sold more than the other two but the author of the article made a typo.

    29. Great news. I just did the numbers with our accountant, and my client Rick Ross is estimated to sell 1.23 million copies of Mastermind within the next two weeks. His popularity might seem low, but I guarantee you it’s gradually increasing and making an impact on his overall sales margin. We are looking at a 57.4% increase here, people. MMG stays scheming. #bawse

      1. Hey, numbers don’t lie and neither does my clients’ talent. Stick with me, kid, you’ll go places. Maybe you’ll grow up to become a legendary & famous rapper like my client.

      2. The hell are you talking about, kid? I’m Ricky’s agent. Who or what is dentaldamboy, some kind of sexual position involving a dental tool?

      3. The spoof post was very humorous and I chuckled very intensely.

A more reasonable guesstimate would be 16-20k total for the next week. Rozay is still one of the more popular acts in the Rap Industry but he has already peaked as far as sales are concerned.
Mastermind will continue to sell into the summer but MMG is gearing up to go full throttle for Meek Mills sophomore album.

      4. “A more reasonable guesstimate would be 16-20k total for the next week. ”

If he only sold 12k this week how do you figure he’s going to sell more next week if his sales have been dropping off every single week by like 25%?

      5. “Who or what is dentaldamboy,”

He is my friend and my chat-chum, I dont have any friends in real life or any real friends online so I come here and give anonymous commenters nicknames and play imaginary converstaion games with them. You dont need an identity or profile to have friends here you can be anything or anybody you want! Its pleasurable and enjoyable almost like playing Pogs or WOW!

      6. bruthadee once again, proving that even black 40 years old with long fingernails can be web geeks and groupies

      7. LMFAO yall kill me with the subliminals and some lame always falls for it. I love this website!

    30. These sales get dumber every year people buy straight trash. Freddie Gibbs has the album of the year hands down but aint doin no numbers n watch Pharaoh Monch and Styles P 2 of the best mc’s of all time droppin albums this month and will be lucky to do more than 5 thousand first week ya niggas buy sum suspect shit

    31. YO DID YALL SEE HOW WELL CURTIS JACKSON’S ‘SMOKE’,’HOLD ON’ & ‘DONT WORRY ABOUT IT’ SINGLES ARE DOING ON THE CHARTS? THE SINGLES ARE SELLING LIKE MAD!!!!, THEY ALREADY OUTSOLD ‘IN DA CLUB’ 4X OVER. CURTIS IS BACK YALL. THE ‘SMOKE’ SINGLE SOLD SO MUCH,ITUNES,AMAZON AND GOOGLE PLAY WERE SOLD OUT OF ALL THE DIGITAL COPIES OF THE SINGLES. IMAGINE THAT?

I M TELLIN YALL, ANIMAL AMBITION GONNA DO ‘GRODT’+ ‘THE MASSACRE’ NUMBERS COMBINED.

      1. Yeah i seen the charts man. 50 cent is killin it on that indie level. Interscope wondering why they ever let him go.
‘Smoke’ already double plat based on 1st week sales alone.

    32. I was glad when i saw the charts today. I bought Mastermind too over the weekend. Dope Album.

Well done Rozay, u bubbling slowly but you getting there. Imma play ‘Nobody’ n ‘BLK n WHITE’ off the album to drown off the haters….

      #MMG

    33. We are back at it again, its Wed. and all the bitches come out to attack Rick Ross numbers. We go through this every time Rozay releases and album,u bitches say it will never go GOLD, then it does go gold, then u bitches say it will never go plat of course Rozay cant go plat. Not with the shit he raps about, his core fan base or the controversy surrounding his past.He aint no cross over artist. Atleast he sticks to a style he knows that is guaranteed to succeed. Curtis tried the cross-over and FAILED. That is even more worse. He went with that Pop shit and failed, now he wanna get back on to that gangster shit,GTFOH. After dissin other people for making pop songs what did he do->turned around and did the exact same shit he accused others of doing.

Quit stating the obvious and STFU

and for those Gay-Unit fans fuck boys, pls dont troll my comments. Leave ur own comments. FUCKING BASTARDS!!!!

      1. You MMG and G unit stans talk about each other failing like fat bitches that talk about other fat bitches to feel thin.

    34. Curtis fans love the numbers game.Sold x amount, sold that amount…Curtis the king of 10x plat…blah-blah-blah. U ever notice how quiet they get when u hit em up with Curtis numbers for his new single? they get quiet then come up with the dumbest excuse u cant even curse em out for it…u just burst out laughing hard.lol…U got to give it to em tho, they got mad love for Curtis(atleast on HHDX comment page, coz they sure too broke to buy his singles). Not even the Rozay stans got that much love for the C/O

      1. No Limit Records sold over 75 million albums. Cash Money Records has sold over 500 million songs. Eminem has sold 48 million albums. Jay-Z has sold 33 million albums. Tupac has sold 34 million albums. 50 Cent has sold 30 million albums worldwide. Basically, that means none of those artists or labels have to sell another album to stay in the top 10 rap albums sold for at least another 20 years.

    35. Officer Ricky we need you back at the station, the donuts are getting low. You are making enough money selling records for that not to happen. Please report back immediately this is a urgent matter. We need those before roll call, and make sure to grab some danishes so get to it. The hip hop police will cover the rest of your shift. Oh and can you brings some of those wings from Wingstop, we no how you niguhs luv that chicken.

    36. is this supposed to be a scoreboard or something? people who buy shit are brainwashed by mainstream. these numbers mean nothing. true talent will rise to the top.

    37. I thought Drake would have went double platinum. I guess that Billboard controversy turned his core fans off.

    38. “do the math 350k is EASY TO GET WHEN YOU INDIE”

You must be doing Puerto Rican math or something. You don’t sell 10k (and that’s being generous) and have that suddenly turn into 350k.

    39. “ITUNES? AHAHA DUDE THE ALBUM IS DYING IT WONT GO GOLD”

All of your favorite artists put their shit on ITunes. It’s easy money, especially when there haven’t been many rap albums out in 2014. Mastermind has been in the top five for weeks. That’s profit.

    40. Meanwhile, a Wu-Tang member has actually cut off his dick cause he couldn’t generate enough interest from the actual audience.

    41. “You must be doing Puerto Rican math or something. You don’t sell 10k (and that’s being generous) and have that suddenly turn into 350k.”

      LMAO you niggas is ruthless

    42. 50’s career as a rapper is dead, his carrer lasted from 2003-2007 which aint bad but he was just a fad and lacked the skills ro have a long career like Hov, Em, Snoop E-40, Busta, Nas, Common and Tech N9ne.

Gimmicky rappers like 50′ never last long they drop 4 albums and then dissapear like Mike Jones

      1. “Gimmicky rappers like 50′ never last long they drop 4 albums and then dissapear like Mike Jones”

You guys been saying this shit since 2008, lol you think he’s going anywhere? Even without an album he stays in the news every single week for something, now that hes putting out new songs everyweek yall are getting mad I can tell!

      2. Snoop and Busta are just always going to be apart of hip-hop, despite no one knowing most of their catalogs. 50 will be in the same spot, he aint going anywhere anytime soon.

    43. Rick Ross might NEVER have the success of EM or 50…and definitely is NOT lyrically a better artist than EM… but Teflon Don sure as hell was better than RELAPSE, Before I self Destruct, Curtis, ENCORE….man I swear everything FIF and EM have done on their past few albums was garbage compared to Ross…

Say what you want to about him bein fake or wutever…in the end its all about the quality of music…and the quality of ROSS’ shit cannot be denied…

      Bawse!!!!!!!!!!!

      1. so do you just have a database of groupie comments you randomly draw from each day? how often do you write new material? you’re becoming a hack.

      2. Damn, how does it feel to be in denial?? How does it feel to know that everyday you IGNORE the fact that “Rick Ross” stole his whole identity from another man. He stole his government name, and whole life story. Saying this, HOW could anybody possibly support and buy a Rick Ross album? I know how and why. It’s young kids, who don’t really know about Ross’ situation. It’s suburban kids who buy it. REAL NIGGAS would never in they life buy a fraud’s album. His career is over after this. Oh, and 50’s about to drop some heat! 50 don’t need money!! He’s got at least 5 times the amount of money Ross has. He don’t need anymore MONEY!! I just know he’s a real nigga and I can’t wait to hear his new shitFuck all the fake faggots in this world!

      3. Suburban white kids online are the only ones that hate Ross with a passion, Scarface cosigns Ross while some anonymous comment on a rap forum tries to discredit him so who do you believe?
        Scarface or Anonymous?

      4. scarface career is over so he has to co-sign some new talent to get his name out to the kids, its unfortunate he picked the fakest nigga in rap but he didnt have a lot of choice from the south

      5. Do whites even know who Scarface is? He never collabed with Shady/GUnit, they probably think he is Al Pacino, they still refer to rappers as Real/Fake, the con game we used to manipulate them has warped them.

      6. yes you’re absolutely right! no white person has ever heard the geto boys before or any of their classic songs that get played to this day on certain stations. white people only listen to eminem and macklemore.

      7. That guy above is one of the good whites who respect the culture, I know this because he actually spelled Geto Boys correctly instead of like it sounds. Some whites only have reference to HipHop based on Eminem and some can tell you who Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash, Quiones, Bambataa, and Crazy legs are.

    44. It’s clearly obvious that Ross’ career is on the downhill. The gig is up for him! Even HipHopDX themselves are STRAIGHT UP CALLING HIM A FRAUD, IN HIS ALBUM REVIEW!! Even they know he’s a phony!! They said he’s just telling fairytales! His career will soonly fade out, and this talentless, fraudulent, fat fuck can be gone for good.

    45. You fuck boys talk so much shit about rick ross claiming hes fake yet your favourite rappers are fake as well. Almost every rap rapper raps about selling dope being hard hard bodying niggas and such but have they ever done those things? Are they about that life no they arent they have no credibility they are all fakes.

BIG GUCCI IS REAL. BIG GUCCI HAS THE CREDENTIALS HE IS EVERYTHING HE RAPS ABOUT. ALL YOUR FAVOURITE RAPPERS ARE FAKE COMPARED TO BIG GUCCI SO DONT YOU DARE HAVE THE NERVE OF CALLING ROSS FAKE WHEN YOUR FAVORITE RAPPERS ARE FAKE TOO.

    46. Its cool to use sales success/failure to downplay an artists success or applaud an artists failure or
vice versa but at the end of the day these people are still more succesful at what they do than you
are at what you do. YG is living his dreams while you fight with strangers online for attention
from anonymous trolls. Schoolboy may never sell a million but he has sold enough to provide for his
daughter by legal means. Dont ignore these words give me a clear indication that you read them and
      that they effected you. Peace.

    47. Man underground rap fans are so lame. They are crying that Pharrell hash hit song yet get upset when some irrelevant rapper like Freddie Gibbs or Killer Mike sell only 9000 copies for an album but they keep telling us those albums are “classics”. Ain’t nobody checking up dudes like Earl Sweatshirt, Immortal Technique, hopsin or some generic underground “lyrical” rapper that no girls even care about. At least kendrick, schoolboy q and j cole made it to the elite class even if the rappers of today aren’t amazing like prime jay z, nas in the 90s, eminem, Tupac or biggie. Buy the albums and support them instead of crying about drake is soft comments or wiz Khalifa is generic weed rapper if you want your favorite rapper to succeed.

      1. Nobody bumps 50 Cent music except for kids that think fun on a Friday is watching Spongebob and eating cottage cheese with ritz.

    48. “Rick Ross might NEVER have the success of EM or 50…and definitely is NOT lyrically a better artist than EM… but Teflon Don sure as hell was better than RELAPSE, Before I self Destruct, Curtis, ENCORE….man I swear everything FIF and EM have done on their past few albums was garbage compared to Ross…

Say what you want to about him bein fake or wutever…in the end its all about the quality of music…and the quality of ROSS’ shit cannot be denied…

      Bawse!!!!!!!!!!!”

My client has trumped Eminem in terms of lyricism. Eminem is 41 and has been tanking the last 8 years in terms of quality. Now it’s time to make room for a new legend, and that legend’s name is Rick Ross.

      1. Eminem is a once in a lifetime artist, we are talking about the rap version of Elvis Presley, everybody that rode his wave at the top cashed out, even those D12 bums went platinum twice.

All those Eminem fans jumped off the 50 bandwagon and left that nigga with a fanbase the
size of Big Seans. He still has diehard fanboys because he was Ems pet baboon and danced
with Keenan Cahill but the general public has actually moved the fuck on.

    49. “Rick Ross is 38, lol 3 years but he hasnt accomplished anything close to what EM has”

      Most artists haven’t.

    50. As long as a rapper remembers to drop the names of Diddy, JayZ, Dre, Eminem, or Drake they can make headlines and seem relevant. Thats the old gimmick formula adopted by the desperate and dickless.
The new formula is beats and rhymes and Kendrick does his talking with his music,

      1. Kendrick’s one of the few newer artists since 2006 to sell platinum. Compare his numbers to other newer rappers and the only ones selling more than him are Macklemore and Drake. Bottom line, K-DOT sold enough in a time where many rappers struggle to even sell gold.

      2. this is the same guy who constantly defends ross for only going gold but kendrick didnt sell enough?

      3. The stalker guy deserves an award, he knows the identities behind every anonymous post, he must have spent countless hours studying posts to get to that expert level of detective work.

      4. i solved the case, bruthadee is the geek above, follow him on twitter if you wanna see take out food for 1

    51. Name dropping doesn’t work though. Ross doesn’t need Diddy, especially if he’s only going gold.

      1. The only thing that can save this Rat is if he starts a beef with Drake, Wayne, JayZ, Diddy, Ross, Game, Yayo, Banks, and possibly Dre.

    52. Seriously? lol

Curtis fans are talking about radio play? The same Curtis fans wo love talking about record sales numbers? lol…seriously? we talking who has more radio play than sales now looool…i m cracking up with laughter…RADIO PLAY? WHEN WE ALL KNOW ITS PAYOLA?…LOOOOOL….

I m sorry if i offended any of u Curtis fans…seriously. I never thought i would ever see that excuse on HHDX. Maybe the radio play would translate into more of the singles being sold.

      1. As a GUnit fan our hopes were that 50 might be able to outsell Officer Ricky but reality has sanken in and now our hopes are that he can outsell Stench Montana. If an when 50 fails to sell more than his enemies we have prepared a defense that he sold less but made more money as an Independant artist.

    53. Carter I = Wayne stepped his flow, lyrics, and delivery.

Carter 2 = Wayne was on some heavy hood/gangsta songs, perfecting his flow and lyricism.

Carter 3 = Most diverse Carter album. Had songs that gathered attention from several audiences making it the most popular.

Carter 4 = Most mainstream. Not up to par, especially for a Carter album. Only a small amount of songs were memorable such as Mirror and President Carter.

      Carter 5 = ?

Hopefully the Carter album is better.

    54. “according to some internet comment record executive”

This coming from an internet cheerleader. How ironic.

    55. “Compare his numbers to other newer rappers and the only ones selling more than him are Macklemore and Drake”

With his hype and major label backing he should be doing 2x platinum. Plus the only reason he outsold most was because nothing new was coming out. He’s got talent, but talent isn’t enough. Ex: Nas.

      1. “With his hype and major label backing he should be doing 2x platinum”

I feel the same way about Rick Ross. Like how you got Diddy, Jay-Z, Lil Wayne all on your album but wont even sell 500k?

      2. “Plus the only reason he outsold most was because nothing new was coming out.”

Oh, yeah. Let’s forget he released his shit the same month as Meek Mills.

      3. LOLOLOL ITS CRAZY HOW MEEK HAD MORE BUZZ THAN KENDRICK BEFORE THE ALBUMS CAME OUT BUT THE MUSIC SPOKE FOR ITSELF AND THATS WHY KENDRICK SOLD 4 TIMES WHAT MEEK DID

    56. “this is the same guy who constantly defends ross for only going gold but kendrick didnt sell enough?”

When an artist consistently goes gold then obviously that’s the highest point he can reach. Kendrick had alot more hype than Ross, yet hasn’t even sold 1.3 mill. That doesn’t impress me, especially when I compare his debut to countless others like Game, DMX, Eminem, 50, etc.

      1. 4 Gold albums is nothing to sneeze at in this era, (2005-2014) you can only name a handful of artists with more plaques in the last ten years. The illegal download era has been cruel on sales but other revenue streams have opened up to supplement an artists income.

      2. You sir are a moron and have no logic whatsoever. You constantly contradict yourself depending on who you’re hating on or defending.

When we compare Ross to those artists sales you say it was a different time before downloading but now all of a sudden Kendrick Lamar is supposed to have comparable sales?

More hype than Ross? C’mon man, MTV named him the hottest rapper in the game!

      3. Kendrick did have tremendous hype but thats because he was not only crowned as the savior of the West but just like Eminemm, 50Cent, and Game he is a Dr Dre/Aftermath production and DR Dre has the Midas touch when he drops your debut.

Dont forget the most important factor and that’s that Kendrick dropped a classic with his debut and got nominated for a Grammy.

I am very impressed with Kendrick selling a million because he is the only new African American rapper to go platinum since Soulja Boy in 2007. (Nicki and Drake are foreign born Bi-racials).

      4. “That doesn’t impress me, especially when I compare his debut to countless others like Game, DMX, Eminem, 50, etc.”

Here’s a problem with that statement, you’re comparing K Dot, who released his major-label debut less than 2 years ago, to artists who released their debut 10+ years ago when it was easy to sell multi-platinum. Times have changed, rappers now are struggling to sell gold on their debut. You should compare his debut to rappers who released their debut in recent years.

    57. “With his hype and major label backing he should be doing 2x platinum”

He is the perfect age, with the perfect image the best machine, and the album had Dr Dre and Drake features plus a white chick singing on 8 of the songs to entice the ears of white consumers…had he won that Grammy he would have sold more. People are too critical, 99% of rappers fail to go Gold but then we criticize the go,den boy for not selling 2 million.

      1. The loner bitch gives names to the anonymous comments so he can pretend like he has actual friends LMFAO LOlOLoLOlOlOLoLOL.!!!!!

      2. the black nerd to writes essays about rappers he doesnt like enjoys putting down others so it makes him feel better about his sad pathetic 40 y/o life

you can tell he doesnt talk to women in real life, just on social media

      3. “@,Anonymous:
The loner bitch gives names to the anonymous comments so he can pretend like he has actual friends LMFAO LOlOLoLOlOlOLoLOL.!!!!!”

Just ignore him/her and drive him/her crazy by discussing music and the articles in question, they feed off attention and recognition so the meanest thing you can do to them is 100% ignore them.
Kendrick is the shit and how in the hell did they clear that Janet Jackson sample? His next album
Has to have some SZA on it she is mad slept on and fine as a mufucka.

    58. “but now all of a sudden Kendrick Lamar is supposed to have comparable sales?”

Yes, if he’s going to crown himself the king and walk around in public with those big ears.

    59. “Dont forget the most important factor and that’s that Kendrick dropped a classic with his debut and got nominated for a Grammy”

I don’t feel it was a classic, but I agree the grammy nod was something that alot of rappers would love to get but can’t.

    60. “When we compare Ross to those artists sales you say it was a different time”

It was. When POM dropped people didn’t seem to know whether they liked Ross or not. Originality was out the window, plus aside from 2 songs, the album wasn’t very good. Kendrick on the other hand had an indie album alot of people liked, the backing of Dre/Interscope, and alot of net hype. Now I bet alot of people downloaded Good Kid for free. That’s just life, yet IMO, Kendrick still needs to prove something as an artist.

    61. “With his hype and major label backing he should be doing 2x platinum. Plus the only reason he outsold most was because nothing new was coming out.”

Hype and major-label backing isn’t enough to push units, examples of that are Tyga, French Montana, etc. Before Kendrick released his major-label debut, not many people were expecting him to even sell 200K 1st week or even platinum. You was going on and on about him not going platinum and now that he’s platinum, you change your tune and says he needs to sell more. You epitomize being a hater.

      1. 50 Cent with BISD 2009
Busta Rhymes The Big Bang 2006
        both went gold

but theres about 30 artists DRE signed that never saw a release date

      2. See that? Busta Rhymes was on his 7th album and did 800+ with Dre, he failed to reach Platinum and was off the label a day later.
Poor 50-Cent gave his manhood to Dr Dre but he failed to reach Platinum and lost his distribution for Banks and Yayo and then lost distribution for himself

    62. “POM sold 187k first week
Section 80 sold 5400 first week and about 80k total”

The point was it was critically acclaimed. It set the stage for Good Kid.

    63. “See that? Busta Rhymes was on his 7th album and did 800+ with Dre, he failed to reach Platinum and was off the label a day later”

Busta Rhymes was at the end of his rope anyway. Kendrick can survive lower than expected numbers cause Interscope doesn’t have a strong roster anymore. Take away Em and you got Chief Keef and TDE.

      1. “”When we compare Ross to those artists sales you say it was a different time”

        It was.

there he goes contradicting himself again

      2. Look at album sales 10 years ago and compare them to album sales of now and tell me that times haven’t changed.
