Later this year, Talib Kweli and Mos Def (aka Yasiin Bey) will celebrate the 15th anniversary of their collaborative debut as the duo Black Star. Now, in a recent interview with MTV, Kweli recalls Diddy confronting them about one of their more incendiary records.

Kweli explained that Yasiin took the mic at a Lyricist Lounge event in 1997 to perform his verse from Black Star’s “Children’s Story,” which features the lyric, “He jacked another and another, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder / Sang some R&B over the track for ‘Deep Cover.'” Diddy, who happened to be in the crowd that night, later approached the two emcees and asked whether the song was intended as a diss because of his sampling practices at the time.

“It was a Lyricist Lounge event that night, and I think [the Notorious] B.I.G. had just passed away a couple of weeks before,” he recalled. “We were working on the Black Star album and Yasiin jumped up and did a verse for ‘Children’s Story’ and Diddy was in the house…Diddy came through and he came and wanted to talk to me and Mos about [how] he felt a way about the record, about what Mos was saying onstage. Mos told him, ‘It wasn’t directed at you personally. It’s directed at everything that’s going on in the business.’ That was one of the illest conversations that I ever seen.”
