Kendrick Lamar Explains First Linking With Dr. Dre

Kendrick Lamar and Dr. Dre have been putting in work together in the studio, most recently releasing the collaborative single “The Recipe.” During an interview with Power 105’s The Breakfast Club, K. Dot explained how he initially linked with the Hip Hop veteran, stating that his buzz caught his attention.

“Man, after years of putting in work, I started doing shows, setting up shows in L.A. Came on this side, started setting up shows. It just finally caught the attention,” he said. “I was with Top Dawg Entertainment, independent company, for years. Just the grind and putting out tapes, he saw one of my YouTube videos, ‘Ignorance is Bliss.’ I was on the road with Tech N9ne at the time, with Jay Rock. He called the phone, called my engineer’s phone, said he was looking for us. We thought it was fake and whatnot.”

Kendrick said that he finally linked with the management the following week and hit the studio with Dre for a little over a week to knock out some cuts for Detox. Dre wanted to see if he had the talent to back up his music.

“Finally got in touch with management the next week and locked in the studio with him for eight, nine days. We were just banging out records for Detox, and he was like, man, you got the potential to really do something. The whole thing was, he wanted to get me in the studio and really catch a vibe. … He said the chemistry was there and he wanted to go all the way with it.”

    1. Do we really need 10 Kendrick Lamar articles a day? I mean, I love Kendrick, he’s great and all, but c’mon.

What’s next? “Kendrick Lamar Just Took a Dump at Dre’s Studio”?

    2. these articles aren’t saying anything we don’t already know, it’s like one interview and they release 20 articles with 1 or 2 quotes

    3. Hip Hop Mags have the worse articles, does anyone do anytype of research or just copy and paste from some crap you read elsewhere?

    4. enough with how kendrick linked with dre, the kid is super dope no need to mention dre in every interview

    5. Kendrick really needs to hit up DX and tell them to fall back. Yall was reporting on how/why/when/where Kendrick came about working with Dr. Dre a whole year ago.

All of that and the truth is, Em’s manager saw Kendrick and told Dre that he should check him out. Dre ain’t checking out underground rappers.

    6. It’s almost like you guys are deliberately over exposing Kendrick. Ya’ll seriously need to chill off the amount of nonsensical articles you post about him. Give some notice to the other artists on TDE.

    7. Bullshit he used to be Dre’s ghostwriter, then Dre wanted to see the face behind the pen.

    8. This bitch stays on acting like people actually give a shit about him. Little does he know he has absolutely no buzz. SMH
