While there have been thousands of benefit concerts for South America¹s endangered Amazon Rain Forest, very few artists, if any, have actually performed a show deep in the jungles.
Afrika Bambaataa and several others will do just that during August 2nd through the 5th, when Brazilian and New York promoter Liquid Sky will sponsor Ecosystem 1.0, which is also supported by Greenpeace. According to a press statement, the four-day event’s aim is to produce an ecologically friendly event and help raise awareness and support for Greenpeace and “other non-governmental corporations that help protect the environment, local population and indigenous people.”
Bambaataa will be joined by California-based hip-hop group Zion I, rock / electronic artist Moby (who has enlisted OutKast, The Roots and others for his summer tour), DJ Krush, DJ Craze and Mad Professor, among others.
Greenpeace was invited specifically by the promoters to propose ecological solutions that will help the event have as little impact as possible on the Amazon Forest, and show it’s possible to put on large events using clean projects.

The event is expected to draw between 5 to 10,000 visitors from around the world who will participate in the festival. “The people will have the opportunity to learn how the Amazon really is through workshops and presentations from local people,” said Rebeca Lerer of Greenpeace Amazon in a statement. Technologies like solar panels and biologic sewage treatment will also be incorporated as part of the festival.
